Timetable.

Right so I went onto the Maynooth website today and the timetables are up.
Can someone explain how the hell you read them. I get the time and days thing, but I mean about picking the modules, how many, and where you can find what the codes are for?
I'm doing arts, and I know there are very few hours, but from the combination I picked, I mean it looks ridiculous. Think I should be picking more, but I'm not sure how many.

Each time slot has what modules will be on for that time, could be modules that you are doing or ones that have nothing to do with you.

With arts you have like 2 weeks I think to finally decide on what ones you want to do.

The timetable does not show all the extra hours that will be added on when you start, eg tutorials, labs, etc...

You don't choose modules in first year afaik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 782 ✭✭✭tootyflutty

I know the basic stuff, I have 4 weeks to choose subjects definetly and I know what subjects I want to do. I am doing arts and when I go onto it there are 2/3/4 modules to pick in each subject. So do I just take it that I take all the modules for each subject?
I know tutorials/labs have to be added later, but even still, it looks like I could ad in another subject or two. . . or is that just arts? :o

Does anyone know where Id find the finance and accounting timetable?
I can find business and accounting and finance and economics but not finance and accounting lol.

That's just Arts for you. I think I had maybe 16 hours a week in first year.

Can I ask where you found the timetable?
It seems that they've changed the link on the website, the maths department aren't hosting them anymore, has been changed to information-delivery.nuim.ie/timetable/
Either way, the link just times out for me, so bugger.

    Damn you D=
Two 9 o'clock starts, and I have to make it in from town in the morning! WONDERFUL.
Knowing my luck, I'll be subjected to labs and tutorials at ungodly hours :(

    Oooh fancy new timetables!

Honestly, I don't see why they changed it to give it a new interface, the old confusing sheet format was actually far simpler =/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,483 ✭✭✭Ostrom

Those are core subject timeslots. Your tutorials wont be added until later, and it may change after your first week. Many of the bigger catch all subjects will probably have to double up on teaching hours again due to the increase in admissions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Well confusing is the new timetables. Seriously, who do they keep giving this job too?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭Cpt Beefheart

Are you assigned to a particular tutorial group or can you choose a time that suits you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

There are certain times available and it's first come first served. The earlier you get in the more choice you have, if you get there late you just get what ever's left. For some subjects this is.

For others they give you a timetable and you fill in when you're free and they give you one based on that.

Later on in the year if people drop out you might be able to transfer if there aren't that many people in that particular tutorial, that's if you sign up late that is and need to change later on.

can't really figure mine out but I don't think I have anything on a friday :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,960 ✭✭✭allandanyways

Win for me cos the only way I'd be caught out with tutorials is with the spanish dept who generally don't operate on a wednesday or friday so i win! except for the fact that I'll probably be in the library anyway... damn final year :(

    Howdy!
First year CSSE is located in the the 1st year science drop down thinger, I believe :)
Had to find the second year one myself, ya see!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,234 ✭✭✭Thwip!

just did my timetable for arts..(after getting help frm a second year)
and provisionally i have 13 hours, only one class on thursday and one class on friday....only two 9 am starts and two 6 finishes..is this normal? i do realise it will probably be adjusted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

What makes you think it's not properly adjusted already? :P
Don't forget you might have tutorials/labs on top of that.

ha i meant it wud be adjusted (as in tutorials etc will be added)....i was lookin at the details of my music performance class and it said theres a pre requisite.. i.e
Pre-requisite(s): To qualify for First Study individual lessons: successful audition (week 1 semester 1) demonstrating Grade 6 standard in approved instrument/voice.

can anyone explain this for me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

Ah, my mistake. I have Thursdays off. But 3 nine o'clocks. Bah.
Wish I could help with the music questions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 558 ✭✭✭Kazuma

Ello again, just realised I spaced out there at that last post!
First year CSSE will be down, in fact, as first year Science (as that's essentially what it is). So there is no first year CSSE option, just have to pick Computer Science, Maths, and Two other subjects worth of modules and there you go.

Oh another music arts student I see! My self and El Pron shall be in your classes too :P. I have 13 hours-ish too, but none on Fridays, and only one 9am start :D, nice eh?

You have to show you are grade 6 at least, or hold at least a C3 in music to do the class.

Yep music too :D with biology and geography. Well still to choose between physcology and biology.
Well I was only guessing at that bit as it's what it says in the prospectus, but from what Banquo says it's a simple audition to see your standard, not really failable. :)

ha well you're the only 1st year arts person with music i kno on dis, havent ever talked to el pron, yet;)

The best way to figure out the fancy new timetables is to have a couple of pages open at a time. Have you're department page open so you can check the codes as you select them on the timetable page. I think they're trying to make it easier for us, but I prefer the old ones, at least that way I didn't have to try and remember all the codes!

By the way, anyone know when registration opens? I've been on erasmus and Maynooth have forgotten that I've another year to do!

Darn I have a friday lecture this year and even worse it's at 2. thats going to be tough forcing myself to go to

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Wendero

My timetable is decent (finance and economics), though if I'm doing European economy I'll have to get up at nine on wednesday (otherwise won't have to get up until 2), and that course seems kind of interesting.

But it really sucks doing finance and accounting. They got three straight lectures in a row on friday morning! 9-12 Am. And they don't get thursdays off as we get. I bet a couple of those people will be switching to fin/econ quite soon.

This only shows cs and maths modules. I'm pretty sure you can check your other modules by choosing first year Science in the timetable page.

I mean what more could you want? :P

Its just handy to use the CS one when your in second year onwards, since its has all the lab times for CSSE students marked out.

Again you have a choice in the other stuff and that can change a good bit in the first week or two of term. So keep your eyes peeled for any changes!
