You got to your 20's and somebody pushed the Fast Forward button on your life???

I can't believe it's September already, I feel like I just took down my Christmas tree :o

I blinked and our "Summer" was over, the kids are back at school and the evenings are closing in.. It'll only be 2 more months and the Christmas lights will start to go up around the place..

When I was a kid, a year felt like a lifetime.. now I feel like my head is spinning.. is it like this for everyone of every generation or is time actually speeding up or wtf is going on?????

    Seriously :o

It's depressing. Society is a prison..

When you're young you get to appreciate living for what it is, but when you get older all of a sudden it changes to what society expects you to consider a life

When you're 2 a year is half your lifetime, when you hit 4 a year is a quarter of your life time...10 and a year is only a tenth...yadda yadda yadda...

Yeah, it feels like yesterday that I was in my mothers arms sucking on her baps....it was, but I'm talking about the times when I was a baby though

Well I had my dissertation to thank for large chunks of my summer pissing by me. But I get what your saying - when youre living on a week-by-week basis and living for the weekend - time flies. Hits you in your 20s and they fly.

Ever since I'm started full time work (I'm only 19) the year seems to fly by, it's such a head melt !

I just wish that I could go back and take a few of those naps that I bitched about as a kid.

Yeah the same thing happened to me a few years ago. Granted i left my Christmas tree up until October. But i still know the feeling.

Actually looking back at the past 3 years. I spent most of that time out of the country. I still can't believe certain memories are years back. Ah well. What else am i gonna do that's slower.

I was thinking the same OP. Had today off work and honestly i think it was the most miserable day yet. I cleaned the apt and found the christmas tree and actually went "wtf this will be goin up again fairly soon" when it felt like i blinked and it was xmas last year. Unreal!

Oh god yes... My theory is the CIA shortened the second (as in the unit of time) around the time I was in my late teens... :o

Yerra it's been like that for longer, you just think it happens when you're 20. I remember back in the day (when I was six...) we'd be talking about how the year flew.

We also talked about philosophy and the causes of World War One and it's effect on modern history though.

Yea, I know what you mean.

The matrix of life that is called evolution is forever spinning around in ever decreasing circles with the rest of hanging on by our proverbial fingernails for dear life.
As the ever decaying matter and atomic structure within our cells convolutes to bring about our nearing depressive departure from this transient existence on this rock called "Earth" dwell on the fact that you should have been the carnivore that you should have been but didn't!

In conclusion: I'm fcuked, your fcuked, we're all fcuked.

    Have a nice day! :D

So true, I had to think of how old I was while reading this...feels like the C word was two months ago but it's almost upon us again!

Really feel's like I done my leaving cert 3 years ago rather then 10 years ago, actually had to think to myself "how old am I?" as I posted this!

That's something else- i tend to temporarily forget my age as i get older- probably really just an unconscious denial of what age i really am.
Not mad about (and forget) my birthday for probably the same reason.

The years get faster the older you get until you suddenly find yourself grey and old looking back on your life and all the youth of the future wishing you were still young and beginning your life.
All in all, age is just a number.
If you didn't know how old you were, how would you say you are?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,339 ✭✭✭congo_90

know the feelin.. 19 (young) but feel like the last say 3 years just zoomed past. much like a drunken sat night when jagers are a dime a dozen.. it jus disapears

ok this is going probably going to sound even more depressing but doesn anyone ever feel you spend your life doing things to pass the time?

It just kinda hit me when I gave an old man in a bar a newspaper and he said "just something to pass the time".

You cant just live life sitting around doing nothing anyway

This may sound crazy to yous but it makes sense to me  ha!

Meh. You're free to do what you want with your life. Nobody is stopping you. If someones content with reading a paper in a bar, thats perfectly fine.

Life should be: as you make it, no regrets, and most importantly, dont do what others expect you to do, it wont make you happy within.

I'm 23 (24 next month) and I have this thing where I worry that I'm getting old and I think like I'm really old..... I honestly sometimes think like my life is nearly over.. Not sure why.. times goes by very quickly that's true.. but I reckon I waste my time by thinking so much about time and aging :(:( I wish I could slow down my brain sometimes!

    Yup, going waaaay too fast.

I think it's all down to patterns.

The first time you drive to somewhere, it feels like it's ages. You do the same route a few times and it feel's like nothing, as you're used to it.

Therefore you have to mix it up a bit, do something different at the weekends. Mate and I only recently copped this and have now declared that every weekend we are going to go somewhere new - take a look at all those things we've read in history/geography books such as Newgrange, Giant's Causeway etc.

Nah I dont mean that we do pointless things to pass the time.

ah I knew I didnt explain it properly its too hard to explain what I mean :(

    nevermind...

I turned 23 a few weeks ago and I seem to look back a lot now. Sifted through old pics last week - pictures from the ‘80s and ‘90s and felt a great pang of sadness. My friends and I had a conversation about our getting old a few weeks back. It’s frightening. I am trying to make big changes in my life as a result. Naos, made a great comment there about going somewhere new every weekend. That’s a great idea. I also hope to do something similar. I’m also trying to laugh things off, stop getting my knickers in a twist over silly things, making more time for my friends and my family, leaving work at work and so on because if I had carried on as I was my life would whizz by and I’d still be saying ‘Oh, I can’t go. I have work to do…’ You probably cannot slow it down but you can fill more of it with the people and places you love. Don’t neglect them because you think you haven’t enough time. Going off a tangent there – I think that was a note to self :o I still wish I could slow things down and take in every little detail.

A year seems like a long time when you're younger because it is a longer time relative to your age. For a 10 year old, a year marks 10% of their entire lifespan to date. A year is only 5% for a 20 year old, and so on. For every year we age, a year becomes an increasingly smaller time for our brains.

It gets worse by the way...

Dudess, I know I'm not a dinosaur yet but over the past few months in particular I have become conscious of how quickly time goes by. I was surprised at people 18-21 feeling like this. I never thought of it much 'til recently.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Nah sorry Taz, I meant that in a humorous way, wasn't supposed to be as facetious as it looked. :)

I totally appreciate what you're saying - those feelings of "Christ, I'm a grown-up but I still feel like a kid" kick in in our 20s. I wonder when that feeling actually ends... :o

As for my comment about it getting worse, well it sorta does - if you're inclined to look at things that way (and I've no doubt most or all of us are - to a greater or lesser extent). The trick is to just accept it though and not panic about something over which we have no control. And, as you say, grab life by the throat. :)
