    Green (West Ham)

Corluka(Spurs) Jagielka (Everton) Warnock (Villa) Baines (Everton)

Young (Villa) Parker (West Ham) Cahill (Everton) Arteta (Everton)

    Defoe (Spurs) Agbonlahor (Villa)

If I was to have subs:
    Jaaskelianen (Bolton)
    King (Spurs)
    Kranjcar (Spurs)
    Ricardson (Sunderland)
    Keane (Spurs)

So what's your best 11 outside the top 4 and Man city?

    Lennon - Cahill - Petrov - Young

    Bent - Defoe

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Howard

    Corluka Upson Jagielka Baines

    Palacios Petrov

    Milner ---Modric ---- Young

    Cole

    slight bias

I assume you lads are'nt including Ledley King because of his injury issues?

My (incredibly biased but imo reasonable) team would be:

    Schwarzer

    Corluka----King
    Hangeland--Baines

    Lennon----Palacios--Modric----Young

    Defoe----Agbonlahor

Raging I cant find a spot for Arteta...could easily be in there instead of Modric. Likewise Cahill could be there instead of Palacios and Jagielka or Woodgate instead of Hangeland (or if we're taking Ledley Kings injuries ito account instead of him).

Second striker to partner Defoe is tough....seems to be a shortage of top quality strikers outside the top 4+city. To be frank and honest I put Agbonlahor because it would be just silly if I put Keane.;)

Not that impressive a team though...agree with Eire-dearg it wouldnt win the league and probably wouldnt even come top 4.

Luke Young is very good and Corluka offers next to nothing going forward.
I still picked him though as he's very solid, more of a CB IMO.

This thread just highlights the difference between top and bottom in the premiership, not one of these teams would beat any of the top four.

    Friedel (Villa)

Corluka(Spurs) Upson (West Ham) Faye (Stoke City) Baines (Everton)

Young (Villa) Arteta (Everton) Cahill (Everton) Duff (Fulham)

    Defoe (Spurs) Saha (Everton)

Really? Running Bing's team has six of the players who helped Spurs to a 2-1 win over Liverpool on the opening weekend, I'd say his might do a job...

in a one off game anybody can beat anybody else as barnsley proved only 2 years ago by beating liverpool at anfield and chelsea at the bridge (two champions league semi finalists a month or so later) all within a few weeks

i think the other poster worded it wrong, would any of these teams finish top 4, the answer probably not

the thing it highlights for me is the difference in quality positionally with the teams being talked about with AM being far stronger than any other position imo and some real quality players to be found here, for instance just at Vill/Spurs/Everton:

Ashley Young, Luka Modric, Tim Cahill, James Milner, Aaron Lennon, Mikel Arteta
    Edit:
    my team:

    .........................James

    Corluka......Jagielka.......King....Warnock

    ................Arteta.....Palacios

    Milner............Cahill/Modric..........A.Young

    ....................Defoe/Carew

Subs: Friedel, Dunne, Baines, Noble, Lennon, Cahill/Modric, Keane, Defoe/Carew .... yes ive 1 extra sub

Yeah i took a second look at it, and i did sorta mean that they wouldnt win anything, im not fond of the defence, never rated lennon apart from his speed and certainly dont think agbonglahor is good enough for a top four team. Now if you threw citys players into the bargaining i think we could make a team that could challenge for the title.

    ............................Schwarzer
    Paintsil..Hangaland..Jagielka..Baines
    .......................Palacios.....Petrov
    Lennon................Modric...............Young
    ..................................Cole

I don't think that the teams we've put up here have highlighted the difference in class between the big 4 (and city) and the rest of the league at all. A lot of these players would have a reasonable chance of getting into the top four starting teams if they were signed imo. For example: Palacios, Modric and Young into United and Liverpool; Hangaland/Jags into Arsenal; Schwarzer into Chelsea.

(at the risk of stating the obvious :)) The real difference between the big four and the teams snapping at their heels is the depth of their squads imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭pierrot

Outside the top four, eh??? Try

    Reina

    Johnson Skrtel Carragher Insua

    Lucas Mascherano

    Kuyt Gerrard Benayoun

    Torres

    ...;)
But seriously speaking, the challenge with this, er, challenge, is in the full back positions. Corluka and Baines seem to be getting the nod, however I`d suggest McCartney from Sunderland for LB. Are there no good right backs in the rest of the league? Melchiot? Paintsil? Reo-Coker, even. Our own Stephen Kelly?

This would be my own pick.

    Friedel

    P Neville Hangeland Upson McCartney

    Palacios Fellaini

    Arteta Cahill Modric

    Bent

If we were to included Man City in the choices would it just be the whole Man City statring 11?
    Given, Bridge, Toure, Lesscott, Richards
    Barry, Wright-Philips, Ireland, Robinho
    Adebyhor, Tevez

anyone who thinks taht a best of the rest team would not seriously challenge for a top four spot is crazy TBH!! Villa seriously challenged for a top four spot last year and in theory they would be allowed draft in ANY player from any of fourteen other teams....of course they would challenge for and probably finish up on the top four at least...think about it...

no i mean, really think about it..just let it sink in for a while then reply...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,418 ✭✭✭curry-muff

Sorry still dont think they would make top 4 :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭mormank

in fact i reckon just an aston villa/everton 'all star' team would at least challenge for the top four.

    Howard/friedal

    Young Dunne Jagielka Baines/Warnock

    Arteta Petrov Neville/sidwell Young

    Yakubu Gabbie

now you add in players from even just spurs like defoe. keane. lennon. king and i think you have yourself a side more than capable of challenging for e top four spot and i think they would make it....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

i still think that these teams are missing those really top quality players that the top 4 all have a couple of.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,492 ✭✭✭MementoMori

I find it odd that Spurs are excluded from this considering the current squad costs twice what the Arsenal squad cost and about £40m more than Liverpool.

    Spurs £180m
    Liverpool £140m
    Arsenal £90m

Also I think there is a bit of confusion about what exactly is meant by challenging the top four. It's one thing to maybe get into the top four if one of the top four teams has a bad year; it's a whole other level to challenge for the title.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

a best of the rest would win the league

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

    i dont think so

still no striker as good as Torres,Drogba,AM as good as lampard/gerrard, midfielders as good as essien/fabregas, defenders as good as Vidic/Carvalho, or goalies as good as cech or reina

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,900 ✭✭✭Eire-Dearg

Surprised by the lack of Jaglieka being selected, whereas Woodgate and King - both injured too, and both very good players, are getting a lot of mentions.

Phil Jagiekla is a really fantastic CB.

4 of those players mentioned have not won the league either, so they not good enough either?.
