Just saw the notice up on mail.dcu.ie - think CSD will be getting rid of the mail client and putting in some form of gmail like trinners?

So would we have gmail addresses instead of dcu addresses? :(

No, we would still have DCU addresses.

What would change is the back end, which means more storage spaces for users, for most users being able to achieve all your emails without worrying about filling up your space, a better interface, and direct access to Google chat and Google calendar.

There was a beta test for a new mail system towards the end of last year. Looks like Google Apps won out over Windows Live :(

Basically you now log into GMail with your DCU e-mail address. So no more crummy 20MB inbox space, or annoying IMAP connections...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭nuttlys

Yay today we get DCUapps! wait, no we don't. The Geniuses at DCU csd/iss have routed all the mail away from our old system to gmail but have failed to give us a link!

But a bit of googling for google and you get this link which will activate your Apps Account: https://idp.dcu.ie/idp/Authn/UserPassword

    Enjoy!

p.s. Don't know if the above link is temporary but it works now.

*Points to bottom of DCU Apps information page on dcu (http://www.dcu.ie/iss/dcuapps/)*
That login link has been there since this morning. Although I have to agree with you that it is not the most obvious.
I would presume that the link you posted is permininent however http://mail.google.com/a/mail.dcu.ie will always work as it is the standard redirect for any google apps website.

I assume IMAP is still possible though?
It's how I use my regular GMail accounts so I assume it'll be allowed for the DCU GMail accounts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭nuttlys

Ha cheers for pointing that out!

DCU spend a god awful amount of money redesigning the site and thats the best they can do! (the most vague looking button on the left handside)

What caught me was Step 6:
You may log into your new DCUapps Gmail account here

and the link redirects to the same page.

More than likely. Most of the time anything you can do on Gmail you can do on a google apps gmail account. I know google offers some administration controls however I doubt DCU would have disabled anything major.

good oul DCU - always complicated.

I had my DCU mail forwarded to my usual Gmail account anyway so this doesn't change much for me. But am I right in saying that's there's no way to transfer any of your old emails or contacts from your old to new DCU mail? Bit suckish if true.

Look at it this way. At least you can get into one of them. Most of us have yet to get access to either accounts yet. :P

Portal works fine for me, just not the DCUapps thing.

If your still looking for the link, try https://mail.google.com/a/mail.dcu.ie/#inbox
That worked in firefox before the official change over but not in IE, havnt checked since.

    :(

Im not able to recreate that, I keep logging in fine. Id recommend emailing helpdesk@dcu.ie (iss/csd email) on monday morning about it.

I know other people are able to log in, seems bit weird.

Quick question, what year are you going into and did you have repeats? May effect if they transferred everything.

Me also, if it's not working by the time I move up I'll go and ask what it's about. Not too worried about it until I'm actually a student there :P, though it'd be nice to get it all set up before I move up.

We're both going into 1st year so could be that?

Logging into http://mail.dcu.ie works fine for me, so i'm guessing its some sort of issue that my email hasn't been moved over?

Yeah id say so, theres also an apparent delay between dcu and gmail, as changing the password on the dcu side does not (immediately i presume) change the gmail side. (And that is the correct way to change your app password as the change password link there is to dcu)

I would still email ISS if you cant log in on monday.

when i try access gmailapps it won't load and when i try the 'normal' e-mail, it tells me either my username or password is invalid but i know they're not because I can open my portal page. the computer centre place was suppose to rin me on Fri but i'm still waiting. I'm only starting in DCU as a post-grad this yr and this is really annoying!!!

I can log into my email account but I haven't received an email since the first time I opened it on Gmail. The only emails I ever received were 2 from the gmail team. Usually you'd get at least 1 email every couple of days from DCU. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭Diarmsquid

How do you set this up on your Apple Mail client?

I still can't access it but can't be bothered complaining about it. I guess I'm just hoping it'll fix itself before next week so i don't have to :P

I had this too. When I finished my registration though it worked. I heard my friend say that he thinks your e-mail account is frozen until you finish your registration.

If you've already paid your fees and it's still not working then I don't know though.

Ok so I finally emailed them, hopefully I can get it sorted tomorrow!

I'm sick of that stupid bird lording it over me when I try to login

No none from DCU :P I e-mailed myself too and that worked. But I tried their instructions to getting my old e-mails from the old account. But it wouldn't work.

Has anyone else tried and has it worked?

Right my email hasnt worked the last few days, having worked originally, I'll have to send an email, what's the adress?

    Cheers

Nevermind, seem to have fixed it myself, it seems if I go through this page to get to the login page I can login. I had bookmarked the login page itself...

Don't understand it, but there you go.

Sure - it worked just fine. I had worked it out before they posted that, so it must be easy!

BTW, for those who want to have an equivalent to the old category system, you can use labels and filters:
    • First create your labels from the dropdown at the top of the page. For example, you could create labels that refer to the mails you receive, such as MSE, CA640, PG, MAT, etc.
    • Next create a filter to assign mails to the labels. Click on the "Create a Filter" link on the top of the page
    • Set the selection criteria, e.g. put [Dcu_pg] in the Subject field. Click on "Test Search" to make sure it works.
    • Click on "Next Step" to get to the next page, and select "Apply the Label", and select the appropriate label from the dropdown list.
    • If you want to forward the mail, check the box and enter the address.
    • If you have migrated your DCU Mail over to GMail, you can label these using by checking the "Also apply ..." box
    • Click "Create Filter" and you're finished

BTW, be aware that your Google docs may get much more publicity than you originally intended.

Has anyone else found the email client really slow and buggy to use. Every time I log in and try to either read mails, reply or really do anything I get 20 - 30 sec delays and lockups.

Very frustrating and annoying going from the old email client to being forced to use this google crap.

Actually you do exactly that. Just enable it in your DCU Apps account and then follow the same instructions you would do for Gmail.

Remember though that you have to use your full email address (Not your DCU username) and you have to use your original password assigned to you by DCU (If you have changed it) for POP3 or IMAP access.

    Hi

Trying to set up DCU Mail to be accessed by Windows Live Mail. I have attached a screenshot for the settings I need for either POP or IMAP.

    Any Ideas?

Was able to get my old e-mails in the end. Did the exact same thing as previous times. Don't know what was wrong before.
