I think their set up is very impressive. Do all the provinces have such a good set up?

a class side effect from strongman conditioning is team building and communications under pressure.

Reminded me of this clip of the All Blacks in the weight room.

I'm sure everyone's seen this one before.

I would have thought they'd be using a lot heavier weights than they were, particularly on the sled pulls.

Ya dunno what the focus of that aspect of the session was tho... if it was for conditioning as opposed to strength, you'd expect to see lighter weights to allow them to keep moving.

Sweet set up but some of the stuff looks a bit overcomplicated, like band-pause-jump squats, is that not one component too many? Or is this just me?

Not necessarily. If you're in a scrum you could be in the pause position for a couple of seconds, once engage is called you've to drive right through. Somewhat similar to a band paused jump squat.

You know what I mean, that moment or two that props have to do a bit of work before the rest of us launch you forward and do your scrummaging:D

Yah and it's what I don't understand about "sports specific" training... like if he wanted to be REALLY specific he'd be up on his toes right??

Not for the pause... so it's all abit silly really!! If you wanna be that spot specific just ****ing scrummage!!! Plus im pretty sure yer mans a back anyway!!

Sport specific doesn't mean what people think it means.

I can only speculate as to their place in the programme but the band stuff is probably for rate of force development. It doesn't have to mimic the movement or plane of motion.

    Hitting a ruck, or Maul.
Little pause might be necessary to line up, specially if you are a fairy back.
Defending a line out on the ground. Lovely for that.

OR SMASHING SOME LAD A CHEST HIGH CLANGER.

They would all benefit from that sort of thing, shirly?

There is a good section on sport specific training in Practical Programming. Basically, this is the definition they give:

"All strength and power training for sports should be done in a manner that mimics the metabolic demands of the sport as closely as possible. This requires specificity with respect to energy systems used, muscle groups involved in the exercise, force generation, speed of movement, range of motion, and frequency of contraction"

They put a lot of emphasis on work to rest ratios - eg in American football, a play will only last for ~4-8 seconds, then rest for 45 secsonds - following a similar pattern in training will help performance

Sports specific doesnt mean mimicking aspects of the sport i.e.scrum position. It's more to do with training the body(muscles, cardiovascular systems etc) in a way that will allow the gains to crossover into the sport and benefit the athlete's performance.
