I generally don't have a problem with spelling, but one word always stumps me: is it "existent" or "existant"? Neither looks right!

I'm pretty sure they're both right. "existent" is if you're talking about a film you saw in the Screen, and "existant" is if you're talking about a film you saw in the IFC.

I actually find the word "misspelt" tricky. Is that right?

I consider myself to have descent spelling but every once in awhile a word comes along that just completely throws me off. What words catch you out every time?
I see that decent catches you out.

Descent spelling is actually very rare nowadays - it used to be commonplace in Victorian Britain where whole communities would congregate to hear people spell certain difficult words while dropping the volume slightly with each successive letter so that the final letter was so low it was only audible to a young Barn Owl.

I am a pretty good speller. I can tell if a word is spelled correctly or not when I see it written down or visualise it in my head!

I always get confused between practice and practise though! :( That's not a spelling problem but anyway!

I never know if it's license or licence.

    Also - words like
    apparent/apparant
    independent/independant

And I never know how many "n"s are in begining/beginning

But I can spell lots of really hard words no bother, don't know why I get stuck on those relatively simple ones

Anyone else do LC chemistry? I remember almost every class our teacher used to test us on the spelling of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid!

    Receive.

I didn't even know I couldn't spell it until I was studying and wrote all my notes with the word "recieve". Even wrote it in my exam today, but I spotted it early and made sure not to misspell it again :)
