Lifting Straps

Just looking around dublin city centre for some weight lifting straps to replace my old ones which wore down and one snapped on me. Tried all the sport shops around Jervis/Henry St area and none of them seemed to have them in stock.
Not looking for anything special (wrist wrap type ones etc). Just ones to help for shrugs/back/deadlift work outs.
If someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Cheers L. Yea i've bought stuff from nutrition connection capel st before but due to work it only suits me to get them at the weekend and it doesn't open then afik. Just thought I'd pick them up handy but I put in most of the day going from shop to shop and it wrecked my head. Well at least i have my cardio workout for the day sorted! Suppose i could skive off early from work early some of the evenings.

Was gonna go for this option last week when I was ordering protein from them but there's a 7 euro "equipment" delivery charge which is nearly as much as the straps. Its not gonna break the bank but i just thought that the so called "sports shops" like champion sports, lifestyle etc would stock them.

    Hi There

Argos have them listed in their new catalogue, See top of page 961 for Everlast Lifting Straps. Don't know about the quality, But AFAIK Everlast are a reputable brand associated with boxing. Listed Price is €8.59 a pair.

    Best Regards,

    M

a cheap pair can be gotten online for less than 5 euro delivered.

i suggest buying a chalk ball in a clinging shop or online. Works the same as straps if not better IMO and helps build forearms and grip strength. Only use the straps when you really need to

I've a pair of these, they're really thin compared to any straps I've had before so I can't really recommend them. If you can get to any of the total fitness gyms they sell them also, good heavy duty ones!

TK Maxx cassionally have them, got a pair of Golds straps a while ago for less than €10.

Argos Ilac shopping centre was actually my first port of call, and they said they only stocked them in Blanchardstown but she could have ordered them in. Told her not to bother that I'd pick them up else where but that wasn't to be.

Tried Total fitness Clarehall this evening and they don't stock them either.(All they seem to have is that big batch of weider supplements they bought ages ago and haven't managed to flog yet).

Anyway i went on e bay last night and bought a cheap pair that i'll give a go, also bought a chalk ball when i was on there (assuming they ever deliver and i haven't got shafted).

Just wondering what peoples views are on using the straps. A guy i train with refuses to use them, for reasons listed above i.e. to improve forearms and grip strength. I've come to probably over rely on them myself but when I'm working my traps or back I feel that its better to use them and get the few extra reps out than fall short just to have bigger forearms. I train my forearms on arms day by doing the wrist curls with a barbell with my arms resting on the bench in front of me to compensate.

What do you guys reckon is best, with/without or a bit of both? (Looking forward to trying the chalk to see how it works)

They have their place i think. A kind of elitest attitude exists and some people lookdown on those who use them. If your grip strength is failing before your back when dead lifting or when rowing then off course they can be used. I prefer chalk myself and find it better tbh than straps.

The chalk will surprise you mate

I personally dont rate any type of wrist curl. I prefer static holds

if you dont rate wrist curls, you;re not moving enough weight or not doing enough reps.

The BB wrist curl is a great forearm exercise.

Ya reckon? How big are your forearms...? Serious question like. Mine sit at 14.25 at their biggest point and I've never done any form of wrist curls to achieve this....

Your forearms get LOTS of work from curls, reverse curls etc etc...

And as a pure "grip" exercise, wrist curls are beyond sh!t. "End of".

did i mention them as doing anything for grip?
    no
    i dont think i did

i was talking about them purely as a forearm development exercise.

My forearms are 12.7 inches at their biggest point

No, but the discussion is about grip strength. Not forearm size. So you would expect any comments to relate to the issue at hand, no?? John_cappa's comment was at least.

    oh right.
is that how you justified your initial dig at me?
by referring to how bad wrist curls are for grip strength conveniently at the end of your post?
and you were the one who brought up forearm size and numbers or am i the only one not allowed to stray from the issue at hand?

And how did you justify your initial dig at John_cappa? I'm saying no more on that because I'm not getting involved in some petty back and forth.

I brought up forearm size to reinforce my argument that wrist curls and dedicated forearm work like it isn't necessary for big forearms.

I stand by my comment that wrist curls are sh!t for grip strength. If you're looking to improve grip strength (for holding onto DL's or whatever), it's far more important and productive to train your static/supporting strength.
