    Domestic bliss.

" Thats a fine cake there Nora" "sure I only had the one egg a nob of butter and a cup of flour" Wow.

Every women who entered was a domestic godess could out cook Nigella Lawson on a single hob and feed a family of four on 50p.

Thats a hard act to follow.

    Where have they gone?

in a way I'd say I agree with you here OP. I think these days it's bot seen as cool to be a housewife, but I say it's a great thing.

Any women who decides to stay at home, raise a family and manage a home deserves mucho respecto in my book. It's not an easy job at all. I know I'd be ok at it, but I also know many women who would put me to shame.

Thats not to say that women who go out and have careers, do well for themselves and make their way in the world should be maligned either. Again, more power to them. It's certainly harder being a women in many fields, so if a girl can make a go of it, I say hats off!

Did they not cheapen it by changing the title to a more PC 'home-maker of the year' towards the end?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Lol,I had totally forgotten about this "contest"

What did they get if they won?

Wasnt it a new Stanley range or something ridiculous like that?

Yeah but can they make fish heads sexy while they're cooking? Because Nigella could. :p

Yes they did but didnt widen the ingredients to include roadkill. I also had reservations about entering a competition against women who have licenced shotguns.

    I don't understand this attitude.

If both husband and wife are working, then who runs the house?

The answer is obviously, both of them when they're not working.

It is often made out to be a hard job etc. But personally I feel this is an insult to those families in which both parents work and manage to raise a family and manage a home. Housework is something which is managed perfectly well by many families with two working parents, and therefore the idea that it is as difficult as a full time job is laughable.

I think they deserve respect for their right to do whatever they want with their life. But I wouldn't go any further than that.

My girlfriend can cook a week of meals and freeze em in the time it would take me to go to the chinese and collect a takeaway. She can just look at a kitchen and it tidies itself. Teenage party animals behave and tidy up in the morning. She can discuss obscure cuts of meat with a butcher with the skill of a zoologist. I swear she DNA tests the meat for traceability. She can check fish for freshness by looking them in the eye and tell where it was caught by the colour of the scales.

Really and I can do none of this stuff.

EDIT For Christmas she is thinking of doing a turducken

You are forgetting a tiny element of housework - Children!

If both parents are working they must outsource the most challenging part of housework. Being a housemarker if not about ironing and keeping the house clean (which as you rightly pointed out can be done quite easily by people in full time work)

My sister gave up work, moved waaaay out into the country and is now a housewife. She loves every bit of it but by god is it hard work. She has 2 children and another on the way and when that one is born will have 3 kids under the age of 3.

She does everything in the house and is of the attitude that her hubbie works long hours so when he comes home why should he have to clean the floors or wash the bathroom.

He would do it as he is a very decent man. But she just has it all done by the time he gets home so he spends the evenings with the kids and relaxing.

She also bakes for him every Friday  damn her as I have no intention of every being like that :pac:

Am I right in thinking you cant bake and its a source of shame and that you really would love a Waterford Stanley range and to be hobnobing with the likes of Bono's wife on the Late Late if you won.

Oh I can bake. And cook. And clean. And, I can even sew! I just have no desire to do them for anyone but me :D

Well it looks like Chew Chew exceedded herself with the chocolate cake and is going for the win.

But something tells me there is a challenger out there;)

  • Moderators Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭ChewChew

I am not participating in any challenge.

I am working on my beer gut, I might shave back my hair line to fit in, I eat cake rather then make it (unless I run out) and I enjoy soccer.

    Leave me be dammit!!

    :P

Through in as much Le Creuset as I can haul, and I'd happily play lovely Mamie for the TV.

In real life my bloke would have to be fulfilling his traditional role, of honing his bod by toiling endless in the fields like a big manly man. To get the special treatment.

Oh Im aware how pricey they are.

    My parents have one.

I'm the complete opposite! I can also do all those things but wouldn't be holed doing them for myself. When I'm at home with the parents, I cook and clean like a demon.

I'd actually quite like to be a housewife and be kept in the style to which I have become accustomed. I could write a novel on the side or something to keep my brain from seizing up :)

Just make sure you grease them up before hand, the mugs that is and then afterwards put them in the sink and pour boiling water from the kettle on them,
    easy stuff.
