Faking it

Tans that is. I'm getting ready to go to this christening, I have shaved my pale legs and that's where I normally stop. I have come to except the fact that I'm pale and not bother with fake tans. The thing is I normally get pressure from just about everyone over it, people always ask why I didn't do my legs or whisper to me that I forgot to do the tan.

We are Irish most of us are like milk bottles, there was f all sun this year so why will it be such a wrong thing to do. And why does it seem like I'm the only one that doesn't go for the false tan thing (I know there must be more but I never met them) Why do so many women fake it?

I've only faked it once, and it made me look like a superhero who had just narrowly survived a nuclear holocaust.

I don't think it suits most people, to be honest.

It's a total waste of time if you ask me... I don't tan naturally at all because I just break out in freckles, so what's the point in overlaying that with an unnatural layer of orange?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 17,231 Mod ✭✭✭✭Das Kitty

I've used it once or twice. It's never looked great on me. I usually just go without but if I'm particularly self conscious about my white legs I'll rub on some sun shimmer. That said I have the same bottle for years and years, it even has a price tag in pounds on it! (yes I know about the bacteria!).

I think fake tan is so popular because having a tan was such a status symbol in the 80s and early 90s, it meant you could afford a holiday, therefore having a tan was/is valued. When you could get it out of a bottle at home in Ireland and not have to worry about skin cancer, it was bound to be a big hit.

I don't see the harm in it to be honest. Although I do have a friend who will not be seen without it, even it it's badly (and I mean sometimes terribly) applied it's better than leaving the house without it. One day she looked like she'd been giving a cow a pregnancy test it was that bad. Much like other things, if you're that reliant on it, it's not a good thing, but outside of that there's no harm to it.

i dont see the point in tan,the irish are a pale race,i didnt even do it for my debs and everyone kept asking me why,i just dont think it suits me,all my friends would kill me if i went and covered myself in fake tan as they all say the paleness suits me,the most i would use is the johnsons holiday skin, the very very very lightglow one

My housemate is a tanning whor€ ! Addicted to the sunbed, her and another mate of mine. They have sallow skin so it works for them, i am transparent im so white and while i dont look as "healthy" as they do, at least when im 40 i wont look 65 like they will :D

I have a very expensive bottle of Elemis fake tan in my bathroom which i used once, a little on my face to try it out...i broke out in spots.... lovely

Got the fake tan done properly for both my graduations special occasion, lots of photos being taken but on any regular night out i just dont bother with it.

I never use it. I used it a few times before but only that very very mild stuff.
I'm never bothered to do it now, it usually turns out crap or doesnt work at all.
It's also cool that it's nearly rare to be pale these days too:p

I don't get fake tan, I've plenty of friends that wear it, I hate the stuff.
I'd rather be pale, I think it's much more classy.
My mother once asked me where I got the white tights I was wearing, I replied, "i'm not wearing tights..."
The whole speckled and streaky look isn't desirable in my opinion.

I mean, they can't wash their hands properly when they go to the toilet,
have to put foundation the entire way down their necks to make everything match up. It's hideous and not worth the effort.
If my friends are reading this, I'm sorry. I love you nontheless.

I find that it's impossible to get the tanner to look uniform everywhere that's why I've tried those spray booth tanning places. You're guaranteed to get even coverage no matter what!

I've done the fake tan thing three times in my life, for the two Debs I went to and for a wedding I was bridesmaid at. I could not be bothered 1) paying for the stuff and 2) going to the trouble of applying it! I don't feel better with a tan on, I am happy to be the colour that I am so why cover it up?!

If it makes girls feel sexier or whatever to have a bit of colour, I say go for it, anything to make ya feel better! It's just not for me!

When I saw the title of this, I thought it was thread about faking orgasms!

I've done the fake tan thing a few times. There's a Mystic Tan place down the street from my apartment. Tbh I didn't expect it to work out well. But every time I've done, I've gotten a ton of compliments on my appearance. It kind of surprised me. People claim to be so turned off by it, but apparently it improves the way I look.
I just don't want to shell out the money to keep it up.

I'm naturally sallow and don't look myself when I'm pale and pasty - personally I think I look sick and peaky, so if I have the time and patience, I'll apply a bit of Dove Summer Glow a few times a week. It's not too mucky and just gives me more of a glow than anything else.

That said, I'd rather go without than look like I've been crawling through a septic tank...and I'll go weeks without bothering, no problem.

I think generally, unless you've got naturally dark skin (which most Irish people don't), there's no point in bothering because it looks unnatural and bloody terrible. Honestly, I nearly get embarrassed for some of the many many girls I see about the place with muck jobs done on themselves...I think the pale look is beautiful, a real classic look if that's your skin tone.

I'll never ever go near the stuff, fcuk what everyone else thinks, pale skin is beautiful and I love mine.

I thought this was a thread about something else altogether! :o

I love the slow tan moisturisers but have never & will never wear fake tan. I've seen few people who don't look like they are wearing fake tan. They either look pale or look like they are covering up being pale, at no point does the observer think "Gee, what a beautiful natural glowing tan yer wan has". I'll stick with looking a bit pale, tbh.

Fake tan looks ludicrous on me - kinda like dirt... I use a tinted moisturiser for a hint of a glow on my legs though, as lack of sun eventually renders them a kind of greyish white. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭bubblicious

I wear tan the very odd time - I just can't be bothered with it! That being said, I'd always wear Sally Hansen on my legs if I was going out for the night, just to take away the icky greyness of them!

I do think tan (if it's natural or expertly applied) makes someone look really healthy. My sister has sallow skin and looks brown all year round cos of it, lucky thing! I can tan really well when there's a bit of sun, but this country sucks for that! Oh to relive my J1 days in San Diego again...:D

I'm also exceptionally also and I have to say I do feel more confident with a tan on my legs. That said, I only put it on on very rare occasions (weddings etc), and I usually use one of the gradually developing moisturisers like Dove.

What I absolutely hate though, is how so many people seem to feel they have the right to comment on how pale I am or say how I should "put a bit of tan on". Although many people comment privately about other people having the "orange" look, I have yet to actually see or hear of somebody telling somebody they shouldn't have put tan on.

I've only used it when I've been taking part in musicals and I even hated it then. I was travelling in South America for the first half of the year, so slowly built up a tan and went to my friend's wedding a few days after I got back. When I was getting my hair done I was asked where I'd had my tan done and at the wedding everyone just assumed I'd made an exception and had it done. It's pretty much faded now, I enjoyed it while it lasted, but I'm not tempted to fake it. I'll wear dresses with bare white legs and bare white shoulders, I don't see why I have to feel embarrassed about that, it's my natural colour.

I gave up tanning and I'm so glad I did! It's messy and smelly and doesn't really even do all that much for me. That said, I do have a problem with baring my blue-white legs... my arms I don't mind so much, cos they're freckly, but my legs look like I borrowed them off a corpse.

If I have to go bare-legged, I'd usually wear sheer tights or stockings to take the bad look off them, as my mother would say :pac: One thing I have found is that lads *detest* fake tan, so that's one bonus in not using it! Pale is interesting.

First time I wore fake tan was for my Debs - didn't go on great really, as I have kinda dry skin. I recently tried it again and it just came out all patchy...I hate it! I use Dove Summer Glow now and it's great - plus it smells lovely, unlike real tan! :)

Yes the Dove one is the best Iv tried anyway(Iv tried a lot of different ones)

I think its all about the way you apply tan and what brands you use.
Im Irish and pale but I use tan all the time, not plastered on but I like to give myself a nice sunkissed look with either Top Image tan or Sun Shimmer or the Dove build up moisturiser.
I think a lot of people assume that if you wear tan your going to being orange which is not true at all, If its applied well then it looks nice and naturally tanned, Id take that anyday over looking pale and pasty

I love fake tan. I'm extremely pale with lots of freckles and red hair but I think it looks very well how I do it. I have it quite dark and do it at least once a week. Been using it since I was 16. I used to do it more than once a week but I'm not as bothered now I have to get up for work every day and don't want to get up early to scrub it off.

I put it on once accidently.

It was one of those 'Healthy Glow' moisturisers. This moisturising was a once off, so I just picked up whatever one I came across on the shelf. Considering it was the summer, this one must have stood out to me.

So I moisturised and then sat down to watch tv. Got a phonecall from a ladyfriend about an hour later and I told her that I had moisturised, when she ask what brand I used I meantioned the 'Healthy Glow' bit and she laughed hysterically down the phone at me for about a minute solid.

Eventually she piped up that 'Healthy Glow' means it has fake tan in it and did I at least wash my hands after applying it, I didn't :(

I had to go to college the next HOT day wearing a hoody as it was streaked all over my arms and trying to hide my teabagged beaten stained hands. Thank christ I didn't put any on my face.

These ''healthy glow'' tan moisturisers dont really show after the first application

    Well it did on me?

Maybe it's because I used a lot or that I just wasn't used to having streaks on my arms but it was definitly obvious.

Any chance you could tell us what brand it was? I find those "glow" moisturisers pretty crap and weak so I and the rest of the women in my pale family would be interested in one that actually duplicates fake tan...

That is appallingly rude! Not applying tan isn't like not washing your hair, ffs  I am deathly pale and I think I've done fake tan about twice in my life - if some one told me I'd "forgotten" to do my tan, I would explain quite explicitly to them that I couldn't forget what I never intended to do. That's such a sheep mentality - "if we're all doing it, why aren't you?" Dare to be different!

I was recently introduced to Sally Hanson's Airbrush Stockings in the Nude shade - it's still quite pale, but it gives a lovely, even appearance. I'd really recommend it.

I find most fake tans have a horrid smell anyway - even if I wanted to use one, the smell would put me off!
