How long do you wear the same bra for?

Ladies, how long do you wear the same bra for?

    I was reading this...
    http://www.slate.com/id/2226405/

And 'Dear Prudie' seems to say that a month is the norm with the lowest being a week:
"I actually polled some of the cleanest women I know on their bra-washing schedules. The answers ranged from "weekly" to "when my white bras look black and can walk themselves to the washing machine." The average was a monthly laundering."

Am I reading this wrong? I'd appreciate your input and I will also be monitoring the OH closely over the next few weeks just in case.

I can wear a couple of different ones every day but I wouldn't wash them that often, probably every 3 -4 wears.

    Ditto, about 3-4 wears.

Problem is that they have to be washed by hand, if they're to keep playing their supporting role, as it were...

I couldn't be bothered with that, the ones I wear the most get chucked in the machine and are normally thrown out after a few months.

I have them on a rotating schedule, so it ends up that I wear each one about once a week, for about three/four weeks (depending on how lazy I am).

Then I toss them in a laundry bag and in the washing machine, gentle cycle, cold water.

Then I hang them to dry.

I found that if I wore the same bra for however many days in a row, it would show wear quicker -- or at least feel as if the elastic and all was stretching quicker.

I just find it's not that easy to get a good bra, and especially when one is perfect for a particular outfit, and if they're machine washed they lose their structure over a few washes.

In my experience, as long as I have them on a gentle/delicate wash cycle and they're in the bag, they don't get too agitated and so they don't get all wonky.

Of course, I'm sure it also depends on the bra itself and how it's made, and whether the cups are soft/molded/etc.

I used to hand wash, but it got to the point where it was a pain to wash the number of bras that I had -- and while the fancy ones were fine with a soak or a handwash, I never felt as if the everyday ones got as clean as they could be.

OK clearly I'm a bit too Howard Hughes on the handwash front... will add to my next 'delicates' wash and see how it goes.... :)

Yes, we also change our "jocks" daily (at least). That's not what we're talking about. Thanks though.

I rotate them too and always hand wash them. I wouldn't go to the trouble of hand washing just one though. I let the hand washing pile up and do it all together.

Each one would probably have been worn 5-7 times before washing. I don't know exactly, I don't keep track

This is brilliant! I would normally wash after one or two wear, not anymore ba-by! Thanks for the heads up!

I'm shocked. My gf seems to wash a couple of bras most days.

    this depends on the situation..
could be wearing the same bra for 2 weeks but if the top im wearing needs strapless, id change to suit top. same with colours of tops, like black isn't suitable with white etc. if using fake tan or running, id change more often.

I have several bras & they rotate but they would seldom go more than two wearings without being washed...they get washed in the washing machine on 40 in a pillow case & that stops them getting tangled or the under-wire warping. :)

2 days max, but mostly only one day.

i wash them in teh machine at 30 degrees

Usually every two to three wears. I wear fake tan all the time and the white ones (which I wear most often) look gross after a couple of wears with tan coming off on them :-(

I'm sure his point was that bra's are classed as underwear?
If he wore a vest (which no one should) but wore it for a week without washing it I think it'd be viewed as scummy.

Any item of clothes not being washed after at least x2 wears is rotten, body sweat and skin gather in these all day. Sick.

I would only wear it for one day, think its the same as with knickers really.

I swap 3 or 4 around each week, usually wear 2-3 times, although they're only worn until 6 on weeknights as I change into the sports bra then, which is washed every night.
Oh and they're all washed in the machine.

Different one every day. I read somewhere before that your not menat to wear the same one two days running, because after wearing ot for 10-12 hours it wouldnt be as effective/elastic-y? the next day?! Sorry im nt explaining this too well!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 818 ✭✭✭idontknowmyname

Maybe every two weeks, although won't wear the same bra for 2 weeks running, have several of the same one and depending on the top I'm wearing will rotate.

I just find a cheap one that's also comfortable and supportive, then I buy it in bulk. I wouldn't have a problem with wearing it maybe 2-3 days max, I'd wash it after that. Sports bras - after each wear. I just throw bras in a normal wash, but because I buy them cheap I'm not bothered if they don't last forever.

Having said that, I wouldn't wear a top or shirt more than one day without washing it, but I find bras don't get icky or sweaty like tops do.
