"How I Met Your Mother" - it's a very funny show and I'm surprised it's not that well known over here...

There's even an episode where they are all sitting in a coffee shop and complaining about how it's fairly crap when compared to sitting in a bar instead (which they typically do), obviously taking the p*** out of "Friends" :).

I said this on another thread but I gave up on it after an episode or two when it first started airing.

But after hearing how great it was, I decided to catch up on it last Christmas and it is a superb show.

It doesn't take itself too seriously, has 5 main characters who all have impeccable comedic timing (particularly Jason Segal and Neil Patrick Harris), and is a damn sight better than most "comedies" airing right now.

When it was being shown on BBC 2 I enjoyed the first episode or two and even though I didn't get that into it for a while there was one reason I kept watching. Robin. Yum. :P
Took a while to get into its stride, last two seasons have been pretty great. Just going a little OT here, anyone know off the top of their head how many
    slaps Marshall
    has left?

I pretty much have the SKy+ box full of How I met Your Mother. 3e were showing a full season of it there up until a few weeks ago.

It gets me through the week until the next episode of Entourage :)

Just trying to think, did he go a bit mad and use them all at once at some point?

I watched a few episodes of this show.

I liked it, didn't love it! - Funny, yes, but not overly compelling. I've moved on to 'True Blood' for the moment, well and truly addicted!

Brilliant show cant wait til its back on tv. If some stupid tv producer or rating "expert" says anything about cancelling it ill fly over there and punch them in the goolies.

To be fair, it's a light-hearted fun comedy.. how compelling do you want it to be?! :D

Whereas 'True Blood' is a serial drama - can't be compared in the slightest whatsoever!

No, don't think so... should be a nice YouTube video compilation of the
    slaps
    somewhere.

I just like the piss take of the ad on E4. The series is a good comedy. But a good piss take from E4 promotions team, who know that we know they have been showing Friends for far too long.

E4 promos are generally quite tongue-in-cheek anyways.

They've had some funny ones over the years.

HIMYM is better than Friends imo, if you go back and watch the first few series of Friends now you really realise its about 6 assholes in new york, they're not very likeable at first, until Ross went mental then he became the best reason to watch the show

    I'm pretty sure he has
    2 slaps remaining...

    Because:
Slap #1 is obviously in the original "Slap Bet" episode, 4 remaining...

Slap #2 was delivered in Season 2, Episode 16 "Stuff".

Slap #3 was delivered in Season 3, Episode 9 "Slapsgiving".

And Season 4 was slapless :(...

Never watched HIMYM,but have to say after Ross started to go mental in Friends,he was the best character by far!

Yeah, I thought I remembered being disappointed that there were no
    slaps mentioned in Season 4.

I've watched the first six episodes of season one - it's decent enough, but nothing special. Is this as good as it gets or does it take a few more episodes?

I thought the same, didnt really catch me. But then I caught a random episode from season 2 that was just genius so i gave it another chance. I think S2 was where it really found its feet so definitely worth sticking with.

For me it gets really good during Season 2, once all the in-jokes and characters have been set up properly. And even then each season has gotten better and better.

+ 1 - Season 2 is where it really starts to shine and also the point where the rest of the cast become more important/get their own main storylines, as opposed to Ted's search for the "mother" which dominates the first season...

I was of the same opinion as you ixoy..

But it definitely does find it's feet late season one, early season two. And has been more or else utter gold since!

Back in 2005, I called it (and I quote):
    Me wrote:
about as funny as a case of genital warts

    EDIT: Regarding the
    slaps
    remaining, there is indeed
    2
remaining as good ol' Wiki proves. I got the impression there was none left due to a YouTube video being called
The Last Slap Bet (but it was simply the last one featured)
    .

As a lot of people did, I gave up on this show when it began back in the day, but am catching up as we speak and it is awesome.
As for the Friends thing; I think Ross is the best character as he remained consistently funny throughout the series, whereas Joey and Chandler lost their charm about season 5 and lets face it the girls were never that funny.

They should make it a tagline for Season 5:
    Now with more slapping!

Its an ok program. Far better than Friends. (Maybe on a par with the once-in-a-while decent episode of Friends, maybe) Pleasant easy viewing.

Have watched it knowing the premise and not really in the correct order. Doing this has led me to believe that I think I know who the mother is. But then again its only a hunch, and Im sure the writers love them red herrings.

Go for it. Unless there's a massive drop in ratings in the first half of the new season I can't see them revealing it anytime soon.

Absolutely love this program. I have all the episodes and have probably watched them all 3 or 4 times!!

It's amazing how they write it to have all the time-shifting to link the story lines but not confuse the viewer and the comedy is genius!

I thought this sounded like a bag of cack, then someone recommended it to me but I was still not sure. Then I saw that Doogie Howser was in it and I got intrigued. At the start of the thread I was ready to start watching an episode but then all the Friends comparisons started....

Does anyone who absolutely loathed Frends like HIMYM?

It is just because of the E4 ad see the ad and then decide. I am sure it is up on youtube.

It's absolutely nothing like 'Friends' whatsoever.. don't know how the comparison started..

Only because the thread is about the promo not the show, it has just gone OTT :)

I must get back to watching on Monday night.

I loathed Friends (anything after the first series is just about unwatchable) and I enjoy HIMYM. Not the greatest comedy out there, but not bad for what it is trying to do.

I think is like Friends in many ways.

Group of late 20 year old/early 30year olds
Something for men to relate to, something for women to relate to
The vibe of wouldnt it be great if you could hang out with friends like these
Own booth in the bar = couch in cafe
    Sickly sweet theme tune
    Unreasonable apt in Manhattan
    Filled the void

However, HIMYM is a far better written program and haven't managed to turn any of their characters into cartoon versions of themselves yet. (I hope the last series wasn't the beginning of the end as it had begun to wane IMO)

HIMYM was billed as the next "Friends" even in the US when it first started but even though there are similarities, I think it stands on its' own now as a different show. I didn't hate "Friends" but do think HIMYM is much better written and a lot less "sitcommy". The absolute worst thing about it is the awful laugh track... I never understood why US networks think we are too stupid to figure out the funny parts and need cues when to laugh...

It's a good show but I think it's getting progressively worse. They have turned Robin into the cliche dumb Joey character which is killing it's originality. Also they gave Barney some humanity, the schemeing and uncaring Barney is what made him so good, and now that's more or less gone.

The "naked man" technique used by Barney and Ted was also quite excellent :D. Notice how everything great about this show can be described with "Barney and ******"? :)

Ah its like my favourite show. It was on 3e, stopped at the end of the series but. It definately is a grown-up, more clever Friends. Although I do like Ross ha.
Why i first began watching it is because Jason Segel was in Freaks and Geeks (RIP) and I was desperate for more of him ;) Sooo many F&Gs actors have cameos in it and also some Buffy actors cos of Alyson Hannigan...

Finished watching the first season last night i dont think i laughed as much at a tv show in a long time, ep 10 in season one was the best the in season, the one refered to as the pineapple incident is my fav laughed to hard all the through. This is just a legendary show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭elurhs

Currently watching the second season, I think its brilliant. All the characters are funny, they all have their own little quirks. Robin is probably the weakest but her Canadian teenage pop video was absolutely hilarious. Barney of course makes the show, and Lily and Marshall are a great comic pair. It really shows that all the cast have great comic timing. I also love how they build up the characters back story and use so many in-jokes. It's a shame its not more widely known over here.

I really like this one too, although I've only seen the first two seasons. For some reason I though that was where it currently was and was waiting for the third one to start airing.
I'm glad I read looked at this thread as I've 2 full seasons to catch up on now :D
