Interested in the reponse to this myself, I generally drink chilled dilluted orange to rehydrate, not too quickly over the course of 30 minutes til I can P clearly again! In that time I generally cook an omlette with a tin of tuna or ham in it, or scrambled eggs and a tin of salmon....yum! try to get as much protein into me as possible but am careful not to drink fluid while eating as have heard this is bad for digestion. Always try and sip constantly during the cycle too. (Usually cycle in the evenings). Then next morning would try and have another omlette or some kind of protein intake. Think the protein will put a bit of steel into my legs a bit quicker and aids recovery.

What would anyone think of this? Any improvements? Haven't really got into buying the protein supplements as I would need to sit down and study them for a month to work out the best one for me!!!

    Regards,
    D

Whey protein milkshake with banana. Cheaper than meat.

I usually go for a tall glass of milk before I worry about what to eat. If your interested in supplements try Sona Complete Nutrition supplement in a tub. Soya protein plus all your vitamins and minerals without it being too heavy if you dont want a pure protein powder!

Personally I think the whole recovery drinks industry is a bit of a joke in my opinion. Unless your an elite/pro athlete I reckon its a waste of time and money.

I personally go out for spins of 100k+ at the weekends and maybe one or two shorter spins during the week. Unless your putting in 100k plus everyday what exactly are your time constraints for recovery????

Nothing better in my opinion than a 4/5 hour spin on Saturday morning, a cup of tea and cheese sambo when I get home and then a hape load of Guinness that night :):)

Maxi-muscle Viper Recovery. Very good, I do prob 4 or 5 4hr rides per week and this stuff is great. Take it as soon as I get in the door.

Legs still feel the cycle but I'm not falling asleep at 9pm watching tele when I take this, plus not as tired the day after. Protein shakes also help, especially at night mixed with milk for slow release while you sleep.

Gotta have a decent diet too though, huge difference between drinking 2 days before a cycle and carb loading 2 days before.

We run a sports supplements company and deal with many top athletes.

One of the main products people use for muscle recovery is L-Glutamine. It is found in many "recovery" supplements such as maximuscle recovermax.

Protein Shakes are also excellent, especially if you add in a small about of glutamine, around 5gms or so.
Info on glutamine can be found here:http://bodybuilding.about.com/od/supplementationbasics/a/glutaminebasics.htm

We sell a product called "The Edge", it is manufactured by Reflex and is very popular amongst athletes for energy and recovery as it contains electrolytes. I use it myself!!
    Info can be found here:http://www.hpnutrition.net/default.aspx?pid=490&oid=610

Basic information on the function and importance of electrolytes can be found here: http://health.howstuffworks.com/question565.htm

    Hope this helps!

Age is definitely a factor here: as I near 40, longer (i.e. 100k+) rides don't feel any harder than they used to while I'm actually out there but I'm definitely slower to recover and have thus begun to explore a carb/protein mix which is diluted in the bidons. Will report back when I've reached a conclusion on its impact.

    For electrolytes, Dioralyte.

    For protein, milk or eggs.

I got some samples of Provon Revive as a colleague's friend works there and though I haven't tested it after a long endurance event yet, the few times I've been tired enough after a hill repeat session to use it I've found it quite effective so far, certainly more helpful than the High 5 (I think) 4:1 stuff I was using before. You can order a free sample from here: http://www.provonrevive.ie/

I also find a cold shower or a cold bath if I'm really wrecked is incredibly helpful after stretching in a warm shower.

Since I have started cycling earnestly, I find a nice cool can of coke is a great post cycle drink.

Usually have about 0.5L of water, then shower/bath, then coke and a sandwich.

Lucazade sport and many "sugar free" drinks contain an artificial sweetener called aspartame which is viewed by some as quite dangerous. I personally never take ANY products containing aspartame. I try to stay away from artificial sweeteners as much as possible.

    Info taken from another site:

Aspartame, the artificial sweetener used to make Nutrasweet / Equal and sometimes labeled as phenylalanine in products, has been the subject of heated controversy—both because of safety issues and the shady circumstances surrounding its approval. Considering possible connections between aspartame and diseases such as brain tumors, brain lesions and lymphoma, and taking into account alleged conflicts of interest during the approval process, you owe it to yourself to learn the facts—not just what the lobbyists and manufacturer want you to know

So, what you're basically saying is "buy my sports drinks or get cancer"?

Was drinking the odd Lucozade during a spin but begining to think otherwise now!:(

Was introduced to IsoDrive by EAS and sold through Irish Sports Nutrition by my rowing club and have to admit noticing a dramatic difference in endurance and recovery times, plus litre for litre its far far cheaper than continuously shelling out for lucozade sport/powerade drinks with the added benefit of not containing the worrying Aspartame. However to be honest all its good work is no doubt offset by the lashings of pints my body gets through after a race so the jury is probably still out!

im heading into my 4th year of biomedical science and to be quite frank everything these days causes cancer, the humble slice of bread according to some people can cause it too. it will be a long time until i begin to worry about that sort of stuff, i have cheated death twice already:D

My brother, who runs 10.45 for 100 meters uses all reflex products, including the Natural Whey.

Paul Hession who is Ireland's National record holder for the 100m and 200m, and represented Ireland in the World Championships is sponsored by Reflex (Products Only).

As for beating the price of £36 for a 2.27Kg Natural Whey, that won't be a problem. Just drop us an email with what ever you like and we'll be able to sort you out, we'll even throw in a few free Reflex goodies;) sales@hpnutrition.net

We don't keep alot of Natural Whey in Stock as most people use the Instant Whey so their might be a 3 day delay.

for harder sessions i take half a provon revive from Glanbia. I'll use a full one right after a race. I also drink about 500ml on top of the 500ml taken with this within 30 mins and have something like a banana in the first 15 mins. I usually train before a set meal so in the morning when i swim i'll have breakfast (porridge/museli/fruit n' fibre mix) within 30 mins or in the evenings ill have dinner after about 30 mins also

this is what i go for when i dont think the session warrants a provon revive and where i still feel something is needed. a pint of low fat milk with coco, lovely! it will be particularly nice in the winter when its cold

Tried High 5 recovery but didn't like the taste and didn't seem to get much out of it. I've been using Power Bar recovery powder since May and find it great. Choco flavour is pretty tastey..

Recovermax from Maximuscle is amazing for recovery http://www.maximuscle.ie/recovermax

I haven't gotten into serious pedalling yet but from my running experience I'd concurr with a lot of the milk drinkers here. Fantastic stuff. Lidl have Organic whole milk for around a euro a litre, otherwise I try to buy Irish.

I'm a great believer in listening to what your body wants. When doing some serious mileage in training I would usually have had some high cocoa chocolate and pint of water while stretching afterwards and then a good carb/protein meal (pasta beans fish whatever). For about an hour after a good run (say a 10mile or halfmarathon training run) your body is going to burn up anything you put in there so I wouldn't worry too much about the levels of carbs etc.

I was never one for supplements bar the odd cod liver oil and an iron tablet.

Most important thing is water, all day long, and after exercise.

Can I ask, what is the reasoning behind Chocolate milk. Or is it just a taste thing.
Reason I ask is that I tend just drink a lot of water with maybe some fruit cordial. I just don't do milk.

    ROK ON wrote: »

Protein in convenient liquid form, about 32g per litre.

I often make a shake from cocoa powder, milk, whey protein and a couple of bananas. Damn tasty, probably overkill on the protein, but I'm not exactly a serious athlete so I'm not fussed about precision.

ISTR recommendations are something like 1g protein per kg of bodyweight per day, depending on level and type of exercise.

Protein. And people like it, generally.

I will stick with my water then.
I tend to make certain that I consume enough protein after any hard cycle.

    Did a 94km ride today.
During ride keep drinking lots of water. Eat cereal bars from Lidl and honey sachets from Decathlon.

After ride, 2 oranges, 1 apple, handful of nuts, bread with Foie gras and a glass of red wine. Quick 20 minute nap.
Dinner of spuds and fish about an hour later.

I don't think that any of these recovery products are worth the money and nothing beats real fresh food and good rest.

    P.S.
Mick Murphy would swear by a bottle of cows blood.

There's nothing terribly wrong with Americano, provided that the hot water is presented separately in a small jug, and the drink is consumed with an air of mocking self-deprecation. ;)

However, serious Euro penalties apply for cappucino or caffellatte consumed at any time other than breakfast. :pac:
