Do you think its acceptable for people to ask you nowadays where do you work, especially during a recession when so many people are unemployed? I was asked this question twice in the last week and I just think its so rude! Who wants to say I'm unemployed! I found myself lying and making excuses to people, feeling embarassed, even though Im going back to college soon. Its just so rude!

Half the nation is unemployed, nothing to be ashamed of. Stop being so sensitive.

And if you are embarrassed just tell them you're not working cuz you're going back to college. Problem solved.

    Yes, nothing wrong with it.
People are showing an interest in you and your life.
If they know you're unemployed they might be in a position to help.

What other questions do you want to avoid ? Eg.
    Are you married ?
Do you own a house or rent ?
How much do you earn ?
    Do you have children ?
    Have you tried anal ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,191 ✭✭✭narwog81

i always lie about my occupation, the ensuing conversation is generally more interesting than speaking, again, about my actual job.... i am generally guilty of this when speaking to hairdressers or people in queues

    childish....yes but its fun!

I find that the people who ask this question either know your unemployed and try to :o in front of other people or Just want to look down there nosses at you and figure out how much you earn. I always Just say on the dole and what about yourself and ask them can ya sub me a pint:D that learns em.

    Have you?

I find that the answer to this question:
    Do you have children ?

i.e. "I have 14 children" to be predicitive of this one:
    Have you tried anal ?

'cos if they have 14 children they probably haven't tried anal. And they probably should.

+1 on that, taximen are another good one to have a conversation about your fake life with.

In my time I've played badminton professionally in South Korea, worked as a scuba diving instructor in a small town in southern Borneo, was a fisherman in Alaska for a year and featured on an episode of Deadliest Catch, and most recently I have returned from Taiwan working in a factory where I was the guy who stuck the "Made in Taiwan" stickers onto toys.

What an interesting life I lead.

He's a crack commando that was sent to prison by a military court for a crime he didn't commit. He promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, he survives as a soldier of fortune.

In This Economy, why do you think being unemployed is something to be ashamed of?

Say you're self employed, and working on a few ideas if you're too embarrassed to say you're on the dole.

Yes and you are too sensitive. Everything doesn't change because there is a recession.

i dont often ask people, because it can often be awkward. if they mention work, or somethign that sounds like it's related to work, i might ask, but certainly not as a rule of thumb. actually, now that i think of it, im more likely to ask if they work, not where they work.

it's often a bit of a weird one for me, cos it'll be where do i work, and the reaction to that is usually 'ohhh... well, im sure you meet some interesting people there... dont think i could work there'... and then they'll ask what my partner does and i get to say he doesnt.

yeah, taht question does tend to get quite awkward quite quickly with certian types of people.

I don't see anything wrong with asking someone their profession if you've been chatting away for awhile, same with being in a taxi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,462 ✭✭✭Orla K

It's only ever people that work that ask that question and alot of the time they get high and mighty if you just tell them your not working.

I remember one day I went to give blood, I've done it afew times and it's normally more difficult to get it out of me (it has to be taken from my right arm and even then it takes twice as long as everybody else) but the last time I went to give blood it was the first question the nurse asked me and she got really annoyed when I said I didn't have a job. I was there stuck with a needle in my arm and nothing to look at except a blank wall for half an hour, it was horrible and she just wouldn't stop on to me about not having a job. (also since then I haven't gone back to give blood incase I meet her again)

    Yes, nothing wrong with it.
People are showing an interest in you and your life.

But your job rarely is a good refelection on you,who you are and what makes you tick?
The vast majority of people work in a mundane job to pay the bills. Most peoples lives dont actually begin till 5pm every evening and then two days of the weekend.
The majority of my friends are working in banks, shops, hospitals and just cant wait for their holidays and the weekend. I say I know one person who is passionate about his work and absolutely loves going into work every day.

I find that If someone asks me what I do within the first five muinutes of meeting them then they dont have much to talk about.

Considering you were giving blood for free and all but that aside , what the hell buisness /concern was it of hers if you were unemployed or not ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

To me it's just like when in university. After about a minute of conversation people would always ask "What do you study", now they ask what you work with. It's just a natural part of any conversation, no need to take offence.

Just say "recession took my job", they'll understand.

I know, she got REALLY offended because I wasn't working.

I never ask people what they do because most of the time if they start to talk about it the conversation get really dull. My friend sometimes starts talking about his job and I swear it would put you to sleep but he loves it.

Offended ? that I dont understand ,sounds like she was trying to guilt trip you which made her feel smug in her own position .

I think some people just ask as part of a conversation ,like asking somebody what part of the city they live in ,more of a converstaion breaker than anything .Understanable some peeps dont like saying their unemploed for fear of being 'sterotyped ' which is wrong .

I've had people try and do the guilt trip thing before but she was different she was actually offended that she worked where as I wasn't. At the time I was actually a little worried mainly because I had a needle in my arm and she was getting more and more worked up over it.

She has no right to be judgemental of you , peeps are unempolyed for all kinds of reasons .As long as you know you have done are are doing all you can to make your position better .During periods of unemployment one can enroll in a local college course or if available , a training course , anything to keep active .
