Yoga vs. Weight Lifting

    Can yoga be considered a substitute for weight lifting?

    you'll be lifting some of your body off the ground but that's all!

    What is your goal?

    Nah not really but if you wanted to get strong without weightlifting I would try more gymnastic stuff or even a grappling art (Judo, BJJ, Wrestling)

    I want to get fit and lose a few lbs. I've never had any sort of fitness regime and I can't afford to join a gym. I've been trying to work out what fitness regime to follow that I'll actually stick to and will give me results but there's an awful lot of information out there! The reason I'm interested in yoga is because I'd like to improve my flexibility too. Also, I'm never quite sure what weights/how many reps I should do. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Its worth doing. Yoga is nice to do.
    A more dynamic style like Ashthanga would give you a bit of a workout.
    And of course its good for flexibility/mobility.

    But you might want to do some more stuff yourself.
    Stuff like bodyweight exercises and HIIT can be done on the cheap and can provide you with strength and cardio exercise.

    agreed with above

    However if you want to drop the weight get out and do some walking/running and sort your diet out

    Bikram Yoga is very good but yoga alone wont cut the mustard for you

    No, because the maximum amount of weight you can use in yoga in your own bodyweight. Yoga will get you toned and fit but if you want to build size then start weight training.
