Shovel lift

Anyone doing the shovel lift? I think Steve Justa may have "invented" this exercise. I'm not exactly sure how Justa does them. I do them by loading a barbell on one end and gripping it on the other end using a mixed grip and a narrow sumo stance. So it's more like an uneven deadlift than an actual shovelling movement.

Anyhow it is a killer on the abdominals :) It's better than the one armed suitcase deadlift because grip strength and the balance of the bar are not issues. I think there is some carryover to anything which involves turning the upper body eg swinging a golf club, throwing a punch etc.

I remember it being used one day as a crossfit workout of the day and it was ripped to shreds by posters saying it was highly impractical.

I remember doing something similar years ago and i remember it just burning my abs.

Theres much better ways to train yisser core.

Fixed that there for ya big guy!

Shovel deadlifts are awesome. Great core exercise, better than side bends IMO. Some people just can't seem to do them though, dunno why. Maybe you need an agricultural background. Shovelling is not a game.

Shovelling is not a game.

I've been continuing with the shovel deadlifts and they do seem to be a great assistance exercise. I have gotten new PBs in the deadlift and bench in the last couple of weeks. The shovelling really helps with lower and upper back tension. My bench is still quite poor but the deadlifts are good
    bench 105 kg @ 77 kg
    deadlift 255 kg @ 77 kg beltless

This article gives a description with pics. I actually go down to the end of the bar rather than pick it up in the same place as a conventional deadlift just to make it a bit harder. But you might want to try picking it up closer to the weight at first.

As I said, people who grew up in a house that had a number on it may not be as adept at these as those of us who know a fella called "Bomber".

At this point, someone will usually post up a pic that explains everything. Deadlifting is easy when you have arms like this guy :D

Then there's the best of both worlds. One of the greatest deadlifters and a great bencher too . "He bends but he doesn't break" :D
