Questions about Corrib Village accomo

Hey guys, I'm an Arts student to be and I have a few questions about Corrib Village and the setup there.

    1. What's the internet like? Slow/fast, does it ever slow up at night or when a few people are using it/downloading?

    2. What appliances are already in the kitchens?

Last but not least 3. I've heard the security is a bit OTT when it comes to having friends round your gaff and that (people that don't live in the Village itself ofc), is this true or are they sound enough about it?

Thanks in advance for any replies

I didnt live in Corrib last year but from my experience there:

1: Internet isnt all that fast, but it really depends on where in the complex you are as some apartments have no problem while others do. Generally its faster at night.

    2. Toaster Oven/Grill Stove top microwave and kettle as far as I know.

    3. It really depends on the bouncer and what's happening, like they were quite strict during rag week but much less so during the year. They will ask for id if they dont recognise you. They put a load of effort this year into blocking off any gaps in the fences and stuff.

Internet has to be signed into every 15 minutes. Its horrible. Speeds are super fast friday-sunday. During the week, from about 4-2am it does slow down and gets slower. A single youtube video could take about 10 minutes to load in the evenings for example.

Microwave, Kettle, Toaster, Oven, Hob, Small Fridge. The deluxe houses have dishwashers.

During the day you could have anyone in, after about 9pm they get restrictive only allowing you if they recognize you, have your Corrib Village id card or look you up in the book of residents. Coming in after nightclubs, you'll be taking your chances climbing over/going under the fence. They even crackdown sometimes on people hiding in taxi boots.

Thanks for the replies.. That sounds like a nightmare with the constant signing in every 15 minutes? :/ I play WoW, Warcraft 3 and Starcraft and was hoping to be able to play from Corrib whenever I felt like it but it doesn't sound like it'd be very functional

The rest sounds alright though since most of my friends will be living in Corrib and the kitchen sounds grand..

Signing in every 15 mins is the most annoying thing about living there, you would def have a lot of trouble playing any of the games.
Last year i lived by one of the gaps in the fence and you would see people climbing under it all the time even people who lived in corrib because they were too lazy to walk to the front entrance so its really no bother have people over even during rag week we had no problems

    Cheers for the reply

Yeah I imagine it'll be near impossible, but Squareyes is right there in Eyre Square so hopefully they don't work out too expensive.. Not checked if they have any student discounts yet

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 660 ✭✭✭Claypigeon

I think some do (judging from pics I saw on their site and stuff) but they may have been the pricier rooms.

Online multiplayer games do not work whatsoever. You will have to get one of those mobile broadband things. NUIG have an offer on them where you can get an O2 one for €10 a month. I'l try and find a link.

where abouts is the gap under the fence. it would be handy to know.

Theres quite a few down by the river they tend to cover them up but everyone just digs them up again and theres one by the corner of the back gate near a tree they never found that one last year but its always mucky so get a sign or some cardboard from under the concourse and you slip right through easy!

i wasnt in an ensuite last year and we didnt have any, but i saw tv stands in some of the ensuites! but sure theres no need to be hiding in your room watching tv when you can be out fighting your roomates over the remote ( which probably wont work anyway)

Do you have to sign guests in like it says on the website? Say if you got someone in during the day would the security come knocking on your door if they're there past midnight?

    Signing people in???

Just walk in past security, unless its after say 9... then it gets harder seeing as security start on the back gate. If Corrib know you have people around, they would sometimes come and ask them to leave. It happened once before, but that was in a whole year so you will probably be grand.

Hi, I just have a few questions,

    Have the standard appartments freezers???
If you have a person visiting from out of town can they stay in your appartment?
    How small is the fridge?
Is the internet as terrible as I've heard and would I be better buying broadband?

    Thanks for the help!

Yes, just don't sign them in. Corrib will come lookin for them
    How small is the fridge?

Very, you can fit about two pizza's in the freezer.
Is the internet as terrible as I've heard and would I be better buying broadband?

Yes, its awful. Get O2 mobile broadband with student discount

What speed internet can be expected from a usb "dongle" based wireless internet like O2/Vodafone? Within Corrib/Galway city in general

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭leverarch12

the freezer in the standard apartments is a tiny shelf within the fridge, the fridge is also tiny only 3 shelves!
you will have to sneak the person in no overnight guests allowed!
The internet in some apartments like mine last year was perfect so you should prob wait and see what block your in befpre buying broadband!

Someone was saying that the internet signs you out every 15 minutes? :/

Our internet (block K) was awful, went off a bit during the year, i've been left weekends without it. It dosent play nice with rain or ice I found. The sign-in thing is the killer. After 10 minutes the internet becomes unbearably slow, you then have to sign in with your username and password. Its unbelievably rubbish. It can (and has) cancelled stuff i've been doing online (so don't be writing up long posts on boards.ie for example). Oh and it's designed so you can't spend all day downloading.

Well the signal is always quite good in corrib. You could expect (depending on what dongle you get) about 1-2mb broadband in the mornings, .5-1mb in the evenings. I'd go for the bundle option. Of course you can buy in your own broadband off the likes of UPC with their student broadband.

The freezer is letterbox-sized!! It's dismal... I'd easily fill it myself, nevermind it being shared between 4 people!

The fridge isn't much better... but it's better then the freezer!!

Ah, how does that work? I'd probably want stable 2mb broadband like I have here (not amazing or anything but it's grand for what I want to do).. How much are the dongles, ish? Or the student broadband you mentioned

You can (I think) get broadband through a company like UPC, Eircom or Smart (don't quote me on it) I think you'd have to ask at reception. The student broadband is with UPC, its 9 months of broadband, the last 3 months are free. You do pay a higher rate.

    UPC Student Broadband:
    http://www.upc.ie/broadband/student/

3mb broadband (very stable) for €28 a month for 9 months.

Did you here of anyone buying a freezer themselves? Is there space for one in the kitchen???

Yeah, but then you've no worktop space really. If youre getting a freezer check with your flatmates first (they are paying the ESB Bill too). If youre going to put a freezer in put it in the corner for the room on the floor. Handy for beers.
