    Anyone else watching this?

2 episodes in. Fairly good so far.

It will be interesting this season to see how they're all reacting to having to report to London.

I'm not sure how Don's father-in-law is gonna fit in to the whole thing, but he seems funny so it might be good.

Peggy's annoying me a lot, but I suppose they need to have some kind of more than one-dimensional woman character. She just doesn't come across as any way interesting anymore.

I'd disagree. I think she's becoming a female version of Don which is what that last scene of them in the office this week seemed to suggest.

    its quite mysterious

was him feeling the grass, him recognising a great vision for the ad, but choosing not to use it.

I caught the first episode last week, i must watch the new one yet. First episode was brilliant, best opening to a season yet.

Pretty good so far, in its glacial paced excellently-produced way. Interesting date for the wedding too - 23rd November 1963. That's a pretty important time alright - it's the day the first episode of "Doctor Who" aired. I imagine they'll weave that important event into the wedding plot.

Yeah maybe. The JFK assassination happened the day before that though and may overshadow it, especially seeing as they handled Nixon's campaign in season 2.

Doubtful - 'Doctor Who' is bigger IMO. You may be right - we'll see.

Any word if RTE or any English station picking up Season 3?

Sorry no fricking way is the first episode of a admitably popular TV show going to overshadow an assasination of a President and a focal point in US history. It first aired on the BBC not in the States, I'd hardly think it was that big a deal there, I mean Dallas was huge here but was the day it was first broadcast remembered over here?

The pattern of the show-1960 election, Cuban missile crisis, M Monroe's death-all pivotal events of the 60s-2 of which directly involve Kennedy, no way will the opening of a TV show accross the water overshadow that. I'd put my house on it.

I thought the latest episode, EP03, was really really good. Quite a few good story arcs starting to take off.
    Peggy
getting stoned was pretty funny, you can see the gradual development of her character into a female Don Draper is happening, with the manipulation of the secretary and becoming 'one of the boys'.

    Joan Holloway
finally realising that her rapist husband is not going to be an easy ticket to rich and happy family life. It's starting to look like she was the catch in the that relationship instead of her landing a dishy up and coming doctor.

The Sterling's garden party had lots of tension going on with the rising stars of the ad agency and Don and Roger getting niggly.

Loving this show, even the bits with Betty's dad and daughter were solid.

    Roger getting niggly??

They had words at the garden party thing, not a big argument, but they're definitely not best buds any more.

Yeah good episode. Ixoy said it best, the pacing is very glacial, but I think it works. I'm glad they didn't shirk away from it and showed how it was normal still for it to not be viewed as odd for someone to impersonate a negro.

Must say, I love Don Draper as a character. He's written perfectly. I love how when he is posed a question or a situation crops up that needs explaining he doesn't bother saying anything. He knows how to perfectly use silence to control a conversation, and create and keep an image of himself.

Like when Betty stormed off after finding out Draper had mentioned they where fighting, instead of going over to her and explaining, he just grabs her and kisses her. He's the man :D

Excellent episode last night with all the "Daddy issues" or in Peggy's case "Mommy issues".
This season is starting to take off after a somewhat slow start.
It also appears that Sal's storyline is going to get explored much more this season.
Betty is continuing to win "Worst Mother Ever" awards and Gene's exit was surprisingly quick given how glacially things normally move on Mad Men.

Another great episode. The actress who plays Sally Draper is really talented for her age.

The scene with Sal and his wife was hilarious, I loved the way the two were so juxtaposed in how they played the scene, Sal over the top with the camp description and the really subtle realisation through her facial expressions and lack of snuggling from his wife that he might...be...you know...gay?!

Betty has to be in the hunt for worst mother of the 60s decade. There is something not right there.

The grandfather and children scenes were great, his dislike of Don is evident and the fact that he encourages Sally to not accept what her mother's position, something he must attribute to Don. And the war helmet was great too, Don saying take it off because it was a dead mans, reminding him of the death of the 'real' Draper and his own failings in the war. Contrast that with Gene who is so proud of his war record.

ANd the ant farm destruction was great too. Don being the one to break it with the thingy for the expreimental sport, the marketing of the sport which if it fails is on Sterling Cooper, the dynamic of SC is going to change even more so and Don unwittenely resposible for it.

Yeah he was basically saying "you're not really Don Draper, so you're not really signing this contract"

Liked the way the druggies seemed so much more civilized compared to nowadays. They left him a note and didn't steal his car... yeah that would happen today

Just to let ye know that RTE have got the rights to Season 3. From what i can tell, they will show Show Season 2 re-runs on the Wednesday time slot and then show Season 3 possibly on a different time slot.

Absolutely phenomenal show. Adored the storyline with Sally and Gene version 1 and the lawnmower incident was comically great. Could be a bit of a sleeper hit this. Picking up major steam in America ATM.

Sleeper hit? It's won a bagful of Emmys and has been parodied on loads of other shows. I'd say it's safe to say its a mainstream hit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,683 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

    Interesting episode -
Sal gets fired despite not having done anything wrong and Don's back to being a bad boy.
With regards to Don and Connie I wonder if the player is being played as Connie seems to have Don wrapped around his little finger.

At the rate things are going it wouldn't totally surprise me if Don and Sterling Cooper parted company at the end of this series.

one of the best eps, like when we see more about what these ad guys are really about.

Have people stopped watching this show?

The last two episodes where some of the finest pieces of TV I've watched this year. The last one especially with
actual original news footage from Kennedys assassination, with the news caster trying to stay composed while reading out the news, and the recreation of the publics reactions
    was simply outstanding.

Couple this with the fact that in the previous episode
Betty discovered Dons hidden shoe box and his past, and is now on the verge of leaving him. The portrayal of Dons world coming crashing down all around him is excellently acted by John Hamm.
I'd fully expect that he will be receiving some form of award or recognition for this season.

I'm interested into what is going to happen to Don/Dick. With Betty being 'done' with him after finding out his secret (only really coming around to this when Lee Harvey Oswald was killed?), I wonder what character will emerge. In the last episode since his identity is known to Betty he has changed (not like the last time when he cheated and was caught and was obviousely was gong to be the model man for a few weeks, this was a complete change imo), unlike where before Pete and Burt found out, he really seems to have changed now that his wife knows. He is less authoritive at work imo and the 'Dick Wittman' side of his character is more overt in his 'Don Draper' enviroment. It will be interesting to see what he turns into. Betty dumped him when she finally knew he was 'Dick Wittman', the man unloved by his family and now Betty. I hope he doesn't just revert to the cheating Don now his marraige is basically over. Tony Soprano became tiresome by the end of the Sopranos.

Don and Betty go into work when nobody else does. The only two enviroments they seem to thrive in. I think that may mean we revert to Don now, dissapointing in character wise imo, but hopefully more savage women in the show.

    Other things I liked recently;
-Carla sitting down and smoking at a level with Betty when JFK dies. 1) Her calm facade in the home is broken and 2) A sign of things to come RE Civil Rights and apt it was Kennedy's death him being the cause of hope for Civil Rights.
-I liked the whole JFK assasination and thought they did a decent job at 're-playing' the events in the average 60s home. Not as good as the '60 election or the Cuban Missile Crisis though imo.
-Roger Sterling is such a legend. Best lines in the show by a mile.

I thought there was far too much time wasted on the Kennedy thing given how precious little time there is left in the series, but it was inevitable from the outset that the wedding and the assassination would clash at the end of the season. Overall there's been just a bit too much Betty this year and far too little Peggy, who is by far the more interesting character.

Yeah, have to agree. Where the hell is Joan? Don't really rate Peggy that much, Joan strikes me as a far more interesting example of a woman ahead of her time.
    <Ollie> wrote: »

Yeah, my OH can't stand him. Every time he's on screen she says "I just hate that guy". He plays smarmy really well. I've a feeling he'll go to Duck then reveal Dons secret to him.

I thought they spent a correct amount of time on the Kennedy assassination. It was a big tragedy in America so I don't think the audience would of liked it if it was just glossed over as a sub plot.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I've actually grown to find Betty less and less attractive the more time she spends on screen. Obviously, the more Joan the better though, and I just love the warm/cold relationship she has with Peggy and the odd power-balance there always was when they worked together.

I don't quite hate Betty.........but I'm close :pac:. I'm sure if she were played but someone less attractive I would.
I can just about sympathise with her position being trapped in the 'burbs with a kids and a philandering husband but her personality is so cold, selfish and narcissistic that it's hard to remain sympathetic for long.

I'm just waiting for Don and Joan to get together. Those two could take over the world.

I also thought they spent too long on the JFK thing. Perhaps Americans over a certain age would appreciate it but it swamped the drama a bit. I did love Pete and Harry completely missing it while it was being shown on the tv beside them and Peggy's going to have plenty of awkward moments when she gets asked what she was doing when she heard JFK had been shot.

As for Pete - it's hard not to like him a bit. Often he does the right thing and is ahead of his time.

    Fantastic finale last night.
Don has yet another "flashbulb moment" when he realises Lane can fire everyone thus releasing them from their contracts. Loads of hilarious moments with Bert Cooper and Pete being at the centre of many of them.
Bert threatening to lock Harry in an storeroom and Pete getting a visit at home after he called in sick plus all of them gleefully robbing PPL blind :D.

And great also to finally get some sort of resolution on the Don/Betty thing.

I'm looking forward to season 4 already. There is a season 4, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,256 ✭✭✭metaoblivia

The season finale was incredible! One of the best MM episodes ever so far, imo. The moment it ended though, I was hit with an overwhelming sadness that we have to wait until August for season 4. And yes, there WILL be a season 4!

Excellent finale. 'Mad Men' is often glacial in its pace and this year there was a certain sense of tiredness about the agency. Turns out it's not tiredness by the writers but something they purposely built up to lead to this where we suddenly see everyone more animated than they've been all season.

The reforming into Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce was played out very well and quite amusingly too. Peggy stood her grounds ("Can you get me a cup of coffee?" "No") and I'm not remotely surprised to see they took on Campbell (a dick, but a good accounts man) but not Cosgrove (who just seemed to lack that edge). Crane didn't seem happy either and his talent wasted, so again his move made sense. Kinsey is a little bit of a surprise.
I'd like to see them re-hire Salvatore Romano but it's unlikely given how important Lucky Strike is and how willing Sterling was to fire him for it.

The divorce element is good too - the Betty/Don thing has been played out as far as it can for three seasons. This break, much like the break in their jobs, should breathe life into the next season. It may be set in '64 or they may jump a bit (deeper into the Vietnam war perhaps).
