RTE Coast Guard Helicopter programme???

    Hi all,
We all saw the footage from Rescue 117, the Waterford based Rescue helicopter recovering the pilot from the wing of his light aircraft last week. I've heard (unconfirmed at the moment) that EI-RCG (Rescue 117) have a film crew from RTE with them!!

Seemingly they are doing a Traffic Blues (god it has to be better) type programme. It will cover IcCG Heli rescues as well as the heli's interaction with other units (IE RNLI, IrCG ground units, Gardaí etc)

    Anyone hear anything about it??

Based on the info I have, I can confirm it's RTE but I'm not sure if it's a series or a single documentary.

I'd imagine it's helmet/mounted cams et. al. rather than a film crew on-board.

    I'll look forward to it!

Yeah I wondering the same, the picture quality was good enough and the interview with the pilot afterwards was very staged looking.
Would be a great show, The Water Based Emergency Services do a great job.

Hope it's as good as sea patrol uk

I was thinking it was strange to have camera's showing the cockpit during that rescue aswell as inside the heli, and to have a camera recording as the ambulance pulled off aswell.

We all know what rescue would be centre piece of the doc anyways!

    Right here it is.

Its a mini series on trial, much like Traffic Blues. Its starting in Waterford and may move to Shannon afterwards

The crew have, as pointed out, helmet cams as well as a camera man on board (camera man on board depends on the call, high risk means no extra man). The camera crew are also on the ground filming when the Heli does exercises with local units.

Should be a good one. Delighted to see RTE doing shows about Emergency Services and covering such a broad range.

The DFB will probably buy a helicopter now then someone there will demand that the programme be done with them:D:D:D
Just a small piece of humour and no offence intended to anyone.

I think it's a great idea, I've used and met the Coast Guard heli lads a number of times and I think this programme will give them some well deserved PR.

Well done lads and big thanks for your fast response to the Sugarloaf mountain a few short weeks ago,top job as always:)

No i've done a look into it. They are on base in Waterford Saturday and in Youghal, Cork on Sunday for an exercise

    my bad so !!

Noel32, you are in fact correct. Waterford heli will be the primary heli for the exercise involving the Skelligs, with Shannon also involved mostly to film the action with cameraman.
NGA, EI-SAR is the current heli at Waterford and not been RCG for quite some time. Should be back....eventually ;)

Glad to see when now have the inside track (I often get things wrong with second hand info as I have discovered:D).

    Continue posting!!

This programme to be called "Rescue 117" is apparently to be aired from Sept 14th. Should be 6 episodes.

Holy fluck man, it looks like a top quality production, its something like the bbc would produce going by the teaser !!

Really cant wait for it now ! !

Big thumbs up for dara too ;)

I've heard that the lads are already calling it the 'Dara and Neville Show" as it mostly features them. Think they're all just jealous now!

Shannon is being filmed at the minute and then I'm sure we'll see that if it's successful it'll move onto Sligo and Dublin too.

Really looking forward to seeing it, especially after seeing that trailer!

The format will not feature a load of shouts. The production team wanted to feature those people who were rescued and interview them. So,unfortunately, although quite a number of dramatic shouts were caught on camera, if those involved didn't want to talk then it didn't make the show.

Anyhow, we hope that other emergency services on here will get more of an appreciation of what we do and not hesitate to utilise the Heli if they think it's useful to them. Biggest thing we hear is that there is a huge cost to call us out. There is no cost !!!

Just a heads up folks.. the Shannon based heli's show will be aired in January. I for one am really looking forward to it!!

They gopt plenty of calls and good footage from the shouts they were on, seems like a good job. Considering they only do 400 jobs a year nationally.

Will Shannon be busier? More sea calls?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,355 ✭✭✭punchdrunk

traditionally Shannon is the busiest base, this year it's nearly neck and neck with waterford alot busier than before

They got a rally of local support.....

Felt sorry for the paramedic that winch the climber up. That sinking feeling you have missed something in a handover or your initial assessment...

    Nearer to 600 callouts actually.

So an average of 150 call per heli, most likely specific stats for each base? Some say Shannon is the busiest, is this true.

Is there many a time all 4 helis are out at the same time on different calls or some tasked to the same call?

There is an innuendo involving "pulling" and "wire" somewhere, but its Sunday, so I'll desist.
