The American Precision. Got it right first time Fender...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭Rigsby

This is a very general and personal subject. As novarock says, the Fender Precision has to be the main contender. Everyone will give you a different answer depending on their experiences. I have not had the pleasure of playing enough of them to give a personal definitive answer though. ;)

    Aria Pro II Super Bass

They didn't call them super basses for no reason. ;)

Pssh, single basses... I have 5 basses. :p

    Best bass ever....?

The one (or more) you actually have.... a bass in the hand being soooo much better than any make, model or quantity in the catalogue......

have to say love my new precision
the look of fender was always enough to put me off buying one
but when there's so many accomplished musicians all over the world using them, there has to be a reason. only now do i know why. super bass

Hey, it's been the standard since the 15th century, can anyone argue with that?

I may not have been completely serious. It was just a shame to have a best bass ever thread without it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 187 ✭✭beng128

The Bootsy Space Bass was awsome but honestly i think the best bass is probly the old reliable fender precision.

But then again a bass at hand is better than any bass ever.

Out of mainstream basses, Its gotta be any Musicman, A G&L or a Spector. They just do the job for me. Also quite partial to fender jazz basses.

Ditto, G&L have some spectacularly good instruments and are really good value. I avoided Musicman instruments for a while but having played a double buck Stingray recently I have some serious GAS at the moment.

Only problem with that bass is its neck...were they made pre 91, i heard that the early warwicks had nice thin necks...

The tribute series isnt bad one price 600 or so for a 5er and IMO every bit as good as the USA series. There controls pickups and electronics are the same. And the feel on both is very good.
    Cant say much about spector.

That sounds great. Where sells them?

On topic (almost): For full on value for money the Squier Classic Vibe jazz looks like the best going.

Well the bass is discontinued know, but when i played it it had a thicker neck the U shaped ones, I must admit i preferred the sound over feel at the time, but could have easily got used to it. The standard for all warwicks is a thin neck know except for custom orders.

"X Music" used to sell them (G&L basses)when they were in the city centre. Alas, they dont sell them anymore. Dont know of any shop in Dublin that does.

I have two Tributes, an L2000, and a JB2. They are as Fatgoogle describes. I'm hoping to make it a family of three and get an SB 2.

As for where sells them, there are some great bargains on e bay. I got the JB2 there.

    Truely great basses IMO. ;)

If the neck on my Corvette $$ is considered thin by warwick standards...i do not want to know what there thick necks were like... Its probably twice the thickness of any other bass neck ive played

Is it "Goodwin's" you are thinking of ? I pop in there from time to time and have never seen any G&L's. If they did sell them, I'd say it was a while ago.

Mines a 2006 the necks too big for my liking, I screwed up my wrist there last year and ever since ive had to lay back on the playing, When i played then my musicman was fine but my warwick just slayed my wrist. Not good.

Wonder if they do the USA G&L's ?

If so they have a potential customer. ;) Might give them a ring.

Perhaps we should list what goes into defining the Best Bass ?

    I'd say:

Tone - it's all about the sound
Playability - not much good if you can't play it
Build quality - be nice if it lasted
Appearance - well, I suppose it has to look good too

Tone of course is a huge area in itself - clarity, sustain, warmth, EQ and so on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 218 ✭✭jarain

No no! Youve got it all wrong

Its Mojo, Grooveability, Death Defying and Chick Magnetism (or Stud, depending on the situation).

Chick magnatism and bass guitars.... now there's a novel concept...

    Have you seen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5QCs3PnQBc
(watch it to the end for the bass bit !)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭Fatgoogle

One of those L-2500 with the flamed maple tops would be the chick magnet and the jazzman would be everything else.

This is why I said an Aria Pro II Super Bass (SB-1000 would prob fit the bill) is the best.

Tone - Amazing tone... cuts through like a knife if you need it. 6 position varitone switch gives you a lot of different sounds from bright to deep.
Playability - Very comfortable neck and doublecut body - neckthrough with no heel. Perfect balance! no neck dive here!!!! Nice neck profile, not too slim or not too beefy.
Build quality - Built like a brickhouse! :D
Appearance - Look awesome and can fit in pretty much any crowd.

SB's (1000's and others) have been played by Cliff Burton (Metallica), John Taylor (Duran Duran), Trevor Horn (The Buggles), Frank Blair (Marvin Gaye) and many many more...

    ... also me! :pac:

As far as tone goes, the G&L L 2000 is generally regarded as one of the most versatile sounding basses. If you are thinking "he would say that would 'nt he" then you might believe Ed Friedland. Here he is displaying the tonal range of the L 2000. This is not even the USA model but the slightly inferior Tribute.

Slightly inferior is an over statement those tributes are top class bass's and their GC is always good on every one of them ive played(a good few). I have nothing but praise for them.
