Found out about this a while ago

Just wanted to see what you lads think about the whole thing is worth it or not?
The price is a bit OTT but I predict a price cut for christmas
To me it just looks a bit like a fancier PSP 3000 like theres hardly any new features

heres a link of a good video of it:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qag65AvGq_w

I think only you can really answer that question. The PSP has been out many years, why haven't you picked one up yet. The main things about the Go are built-in flash memory and bluetooth so you can connect a headset, wireless controller etc. It's lighter and smaller than the phat PSP.

It's not intended as a replacement for the phat and will be sold along side it. So you have to ask yourself is the smaller size, lighter weight, bluetooth and built-in flash memory what you want from a PSP and is it worth paying the extra for.

Funny that he doesn't mention in the video the fact that it has Bluetooth support. Apparently you'll be able to use Bluetooth headsets and PS3 controllers with the PSP Go!. I've read on another forum (NeoGAF) that apparently the screen is even better than that of the PSP 3000, not sure whether to trust that information though.

As for whether it's worth it, 16GB of internal memory and a free copy of Gran Turismo Portable ain't half bad. I will be getting one but I'll shop around. Tesco might be the best bet as they had a pre-order up for £199. HMV might have a good price as well as I've heard that they had the best price for pre-ordering the PS3 Slim. I'm also interested to hear what plans Sony have to enable us to transfer our UMDs onto the PSP Go!. They might announce that at the Tokyo Game Show next month.

TBH if no one buys it before xmas they are definately facing defeat by nintendo and will have to decrease the price of it...Although I love the PSP GO and the look of it, I do not think it will have much sales!!

I totally agree with Kintarō Hattori

I think it looks great and I will be getting one myself. I'm heading to the US in the new year so I will wait till then to get it.

I hope to pick one up on release day. I had a PSP before & I sold it, then later realised how much I missed hand held gaming, so with the PSP Go's memory I shall fit more than enough on it at a time to make it worth it for me. :)

GP, you are pushing the Go like no tomorrow!

Basically it is a crazy price. The PS3 Slim comes out and gets a price cut, the PSP GO (Slim) comes out and it gets a price increase.

Smaller screen and the biggie is that you have to buy games for it via the PSN store. Basically that means never being able to pick up a UMD bargain again and always having to go down the ridiculously stagnant PSN store prices. I am assuming it'll be fairly hack proof seeing as how the 3000 is only getting round to being hacked now and only with limited effect by all accounts.

In summary, 16GB of flash memory doesn't outweigh the cons of a crazy price and the liklihood of getting the "Joan Collins Special" with regards digital pricing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 963 ✭✭✭4real

So I would have to re-buy all of the games and movies that I already own from the PS-Store since this doesn't have a UMD slot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

Well no, if you bought them from the PSN store, their gonna be under your account to download again on the GO.........

But you can share them just like PSN games so if you can find enough friends with PSPs you could get them for 1/5 RRP. A lot of games on the store now have gone up below RRP (Patapon and Patapon 2 for example).

The price is crazy though. If it wasn't for the free Gran Turismo Portable and the fact the release coincides roughly with my birthday I'd be waiting until the inevitable bundles appear at Christmas or in the New Year. To me, PSP + GT PSP + 16 GB flash memory + Shiny = worth ~ €250.

Apparently the price is high due to retailers needing to make more money off it as they won't be making money from software. It also positions it as a 'premium device', which Apple have so graciously convinced the ignorant masses is desirable.

Not necessarily, Sony have said they have plans to enable users to transfer games onto their PSPs somehow, but they haven't yet revealed what/when/how. I answered this in the 3rd post of this very thread btw.

The PSP Go! isn't a replacement for PSPs with UMDs anyway, it's a sister product. Games will be getting a dual release on UMD and on the PSN.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

I have a launch PSP which rarely gets seeing to. I play more games on my iPhone these days which is telling about what kind of games are fun on a bus. The PSP Go's app store rip-off does intrigue me, as well as the "getting iPhone devs on board" bit Sony are pushing now too.

Seems like a good piece of kit, and small enough to not be awkward when out-and-about, so I'd say it'll do well. The price is a barrier to entry though..

€249 - a bit steep when you think of it. Plus just like the PS3 Slim, it's the same price in dollars which means us Europeans are being ripped off

oh btw I do have a psp the first model,PSP-1000 I got it roughly 5 months before it came out in Ireland/Europe all the way from the land of the rising sun to be exact

I just looked on Play.com to see the price they are charing for the PSP Go. They are charging a mind blowing €292. I can't believe that price.

I wasn't intending on buying one in Ireland and now I know for sure that I won't be. Imagine that it is $250 in the US and our price works out to be about $417. Funny that all the American's on other forums like NeoGAF are complaining about the price over there.

Yeah I saw that alright, now they're complaining about the gimped version of Rock Band: Unplugged they're getting as we're getting Gran Turismo Portable free at launch.

That Play.com price is ridiculous. Someone from mainland Europe on NeoGAF said they had a pre-order for €250 that included a €20 PSN voucher. I would love to find an offer like that here, that would really sweeten the deal for me.

For some reason play.com are charging 325e for the PS3 slim.
I have a question for you folks, does anybody know if I buy the PSP GO! over in the states will I be able to download games of the European PSP store? Can I be anyway sure the device is not region locked?

I have read that you can have either a US or European PSN account linked to your PSP Go. However it said you could only have one account linked at a time. So registering one will cancel the other.

If that is true it is annoying but not the end of the world.

Yes you are right, it won't take a Memory Stick Pro Duo, only Memory Stick Micro. I haven't tried to pre-order anywhere yet as I'm thinking they'll have to bundle something with it to get it to sell.

ShopTo has empathised with European retailers boycotting PSPgo, and reckons the format "is almost dead before it has arrived".
Analyst Michael Pachter, on the other hand, thinks they're all being "foolish", and calls the entire situation "ridiculous".
"It's just silly for a retailer to say that they won't sell a big ticket gaming device because they can't sell the games. Consumer electronics stores sell refrigerators and not food, everyone sells iPods and not the music for them; this position is just ridiculous," Michael Pachter, analyst for investor Wedbush Morgan Securities, told Eurogamer.
"I think that it's foolish for a retailer to be selective about what they carry, unless they truly don't believe it will sell well."
A much better course of action, he argued, would be to buy limited stock and then re-order if appropriate. "Refusing to carry them subjects them to the risk that Sony will bypass them for Gran Turismo or Uncharted, in which case they lose," he said.
The ball began rolling when Dutch outlet Nedgame publicly opposed the PSPgo for being too expensive and for not featuring a UMD drive, thus providing no opportunity to sell games. And controlling all sales via PSN gives Sony a "monopoly" on software sales, argued the shop.
Media Markt, a German retail chain that spans Europe, took up a similar position, with Spanish and Italian (and no doubt other regions) outlets prohibited from selling the device.
ShopTo will not follow suit, but agrees with the sentiment. "We do have it listed on the site, but we are not concentrating any big marketing behind it," boss Igor Cipolletta told Eurogamer.
"Sony has decided to cut publishers and retailers for the software of the PSPgo and deal direct with developers, giving them a 70 per cent margin for any items sold on Sony PSN. I believe if they had lowered that to 50 or 60 per cent, and given the opportunity to online retailers, it would have enjoyed greater success and retailers would attempt to promote the console to the market."
Cipolletta, however, feels the damage may have already been done, and the format - which launches here on 1st October for £224.99 (€249.99) - will be a flop.
"I have the feeling that as a format it is almost dead before it has arrived, and it relies far too heavily on a customer base that is prepared to pay more for download content than the equivalent disc based product, and I suspect this market will soon dry up based on the technical limitations of the hardware," Cipolletta shared.
But, Pachter added, while retailers wield "some power" now, their foot-stamping won't be entertained for long.
"As far as the argument that 'it's about time' retailers received their comeuppance: I think that will occur soon enough anyway, as the large hard drives in the PS3 and 360 (and the larger ones coming) will encourage a greater number of downloads in the future," he offered.
"Retailers have to face the fact that games will be increasingly offered over Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and cope with the outcome.
"To draw a line in the sand," Pachter said, "is wrong."
Sony, incidentally, has not responded comment on the matter.

I have 2 PSPs the original and the Slim n lite.

I wouldnt touch the Go at that price. I reckon we will see terrible sales of the device leading to a price cut for Christmas. The games just arent that good in my view. Metal Gear needs to be a cracker or else the format is doomed. Either that or turn it into a phone!

The specs are identical so just go with the cheaper one. Be aware though that with a 3Mbps read speed transferring information to the card takes a while.

I've got a pair of those. They're pretty good, just the receiver bit is kinda bulky, and the sound does drop in and out a bit depending on what pocket i have my phone in. Would be great for gaming though i'd say since you are gonna be holding the PSP. And they don't look ridiculous like some of the other options out there.

I sent a mail to gamestops info@gamestop email address asking if they were going to stock the PSP GO and add it to the €30 preorder list offer.

Waiting word back as I have some games on that list I never play and could get €150 off a psp go.

To be perfectly honest anybody who'd pay €249 for the Go needs their head examined.

You'll also have to pay the standard €39.99 for games from the PSN.

Just what are Sony thinking with this move?

I have a US psn account with a good exchange rate. It saves me money on importing and i get the games on release.

Nice one, that's a great idea.

Considering I'm in the market for a new PSP, I could get a PSP 3000, for what, €170-80? Then I want a big memory card (I have an 8GB already and want to go larger). From mymemory.co.uk, I could get a Lexar 16GB card for about €45. I'm also in the market for Gran Turismo PSP, which I could get online for about €22. A grand total of... €240-250. Hmmm I could get all of those things I listed if I bought the PSP Go, and it's smaller and has a few extra features as well.

Oooh and there's a sale on PSP games on the PSN in the first week of October? 25-50% off you say? Delicious.

What is the limit on the price you can gameshare? I know for PS3 if it's 30euro or above you can not gameshare....Is it same for PSP?..

I would be more of a fan of the mini games instead of the full PSP games...

I don't think Game Sharing is limited by price (e.g. you can game share Burnout: Paradise).

Anyways, PSP games can be activated on up to 5 PSPs, just like the majority of PS3 PSN stuff.

I know you can gameshare Burnout on PS3, but the likes of Socom and Warhawk they are not gameshareable...

If you can gameshare all PSP games then I don't see what the fuss is about...Team up with a mate and split the cost of the games, then it works out cheaper :)

Siren: Blood Curse is also shareable. I'm pretty sure the developer and Sony together decide whether a title can be shareable or not, I don't think it's a rule based on price.

Exactly, if you had four other mates you could get titles on release for €6-8 each. Not including the fact that despite all the digital download naysayers, prices on the PSN are not static and also go down in price.

One last question for now :p...

Can I trade in lets say 7 or 8 different games in gamestop that are in the 30euro pre order list and get PSP Go for free?...

Been looking into prices etc. and if it works you could get PSP Go for 150 and less...

Pre ordered my PSP Go today in Gamestop Henry street. They said it was their second day for taking pre orders & that alot of other Gamestop stores recieved PSN cards last week & they have none in stock. I checked around other stores like Game, Smyths & HMV, with HMV the only store with posters etc. of the console to advertise it.
Cost a tenner to pre order it in Gamestop.
