I'm starting a Masters in DCU the end of sept... just wondering if anyone's any idea about registration for postgrads? I've heard nothing from them yet, only a receipt in the post for my fees :)

Last year post-grads registered the first week of term (twas the Thursday for me)...

havent heard anything myself, was begining to wonder.

I've heard they send out stuff the week before registration, so don't think we'll be getting anything for another 2 weeks or so. But the online registration is from the 3rd til the 18th of September so might get an e-mail about that. It's all very unclear...(& irritating as hell if you ask me, I want to know what's going on!)
    What MA's are you doing?

I remember it was the same last year. I was starting to wonder. Thing is just turn up when they tell you your first class/get together is. Registration happened a week or so after for us. It's all online now so it's not the big deal it used be hence why people are lax with the information.

Doyle G, with a degree title like that I am now assuming you are Ireland's answer to Gregory House, & should we ever happen to meet on campus, I would request that you walk with a cane, so as to not spoil my fantasy. Much appreciated.

I'm definatley not as clever as house.... altho a walkin stick would be an idea... not very practical for the lab tho :p

I'm starting an MA in DCU too. Tried to register for the postgrad orientation day they have advertised on the website, but I have to wait til they send out the info pack etc. Getting a bit impatient about it. I want to start now! ;)

I know, it'a such a pain, & my old college peeps who are still doing their BA are all registered & starting next week...not that I want to be starting, but I'd like to be that organized! What MA are you doing?

I'm doing Security and Conflict Studies. A bit of a track change from my archaeology/ history background. But I'm really looking forward to starting something new. Hoping to combine my experience in the heritage sector with conflict studies. The realities of being a full time student again are just starting to hit home!

    Which Masters are you doing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Doyle_G

Security and conflict studies sounds really interesting! Have you heard anything from DCU about registration yet?? they better get their act together!

I haven't gotten a single piece of paper from them yet. Everything will probably be posted out 2 weeks before courses start. Doesn't leave much time to sort things out!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Frank Grimes

I rang them a few weeks ago, according to person I was talking to it'll be the first week in September before we get anything from them. I'll be doing the MA in International Relations.

Thanks Frank Grimes! I was tempted by the International Relations one myself. They seem to have a great range of courses. Roll on next week so :)

Yeah, the choices within the courses look excellent too. Was one of the reasons I picked DCU over staying on in UCD to do a masters.

You should be getting some sort of info pack in the next week or so. Registration will probably be the first week of semester, but the first years do it the week before, so if you're transferring into the college, it might be then.

is the €1500 registration fee included in our fees or is that paid seperately?? oh god hope its not extra!! anyone else doing biomedical diagnostics??

I was told that whatever fee is listed on the site is the full amount we've to pay.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 246 ✭✭Medievalist

Are the reg fees not completely separate from the course fees? I was pretty sure they were. The course fees are set and organised by the faculties (?), whereby the reg fees are for admin, students union, balancing the books etc. I'd love it if the price on the website is inclusive, but I've a sneaking suspicion the €1500 is on top of that again.

God that's depressing. Doing Journalism - at these prices let's all hope our courses are amazing!

Ouch. Anyone able to confirm this??? Or hopefully tell us its an elaborate hoax?!

i know someone who did the electronic commerce masters im starting, and he only had to pay the 2k.

However, with the economic crap at the minute, it wouldnt surprise me if they slapped this on as well

    Here's hoping they dont!!

I got a letter this morning from them with my student number, username & password etc. I just phoned DCU to ask about the fees, I was told (again) that whatever amount is listed on the site is the full amount that has to be paid.

That's great! It was starting to look very expensive! I got the letter too. Now just to register...:)

Yeah, its whatevers on the site. Since theres no course fees yet, all you're paying are reg fees, unless you're non EU.

That only applies for undergrads on the Free Fees program. Postgrads have to pay full fees. Hence our worshipping of the money god known as 'Grant'

There are course fees for post grads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭JoePie

Woops, yeah thats right. Sorry. My postgrad is computing related, so its EU funded, so I don't have to pay a whole lot more than the reg fees. So I never think of that.

i just paid 60% of my fees, the rest being paid in January!!! it's expensive enough... college is such a drain on the pocket :( got the stuff in the post too... at least we're starting to get info outta them

Could you log on with your password etc? Tried mine, but couldn't get past the log in window. Wondering if maybe the system isn't set up yet?

Edit: I should clarify that I could access the registration page but couldn't log onto the postgrad orientation page.

I was trying to log onto 'www.dcu.ie/postgraduate_orientation', through the student portal (the url given in the letter). No luck though. Perhaps it will only be available after the registration process is up and running?

I can't log in there either, guess it'll only work after we've actually registered next week.

yea i think the letter said that we can't access our e-mail or student portal page until 24hrs after registration... :o

All of the DCU databases were down last night. I have no problem logging into my portal page now though but that's because I did my undergrad in DCU. There's absolutely nothing useful up there at the moment though, so you're not missing out.

Re: fees, is anyone else getting a grant from their council?
I'm getting one so will get €6200 of my (€8000+) fees paid, but does anyone know what way that's broken up for the 60/40% payment? Will I have to pay anything when I register or will they cover the initial 60%, and then I'll have to make up the difference in January?
    Hhmmm.
Can check it out with them, but just thought if anyone knew it would be handy.
    Cheers.

I've applied for the grant myself and as far as I know unless your grant application has already beeen accepted then full fees have to be paid until the grant comes in and we'll get a refund then.

I was under the impression that you bring your grant letter to registration and you dont have to pay any fees except after 6200? So you'd have to pay 1800 on registration as your grant covers the rest?
If you find out the story will you post here because I'd like to know too.

I've applied and got my acceptance letter there last week, so hopefully I won't have too much hassle with it.

For the €1800 registration fees, I think the grant also covers that? Along with the €6200?
I don't think the registration fee is included in my course fee of €8263, because I'm near sure that was the price before the registration fee hike. Could be wrong of course!

I'll try ringing the fees office in the next couple of days and see how I get on.

Just had a look at the DCU website, and the module listings for 2009/10 are up. Looks like there are some great choices (for me anyway!). It's all getting a little closer now :)

As long as you've the acceptance lettter I don't think you'll have to pay any fees at the beginnning. I haven't gotten any letter back yet though so will hace to fork out for now :( How long did it take you to get a reply from your county council? out of interest?

I applied for the grant this year too but it's my first year applying for it. i've paid 60% of my fees so what happens now? do i have to wait on a letter or what??

I sent away my application at the end of June, then a couple of weeks later they sent a letter back requesting all the forms/tax certs/etc so sent them away again, and then heard back last week. I just really wanted to get it sorted before all the Leaving Cert/CAO applications flooded them...

How long it takes will depend on how much/if they want to assess you with all the income stuff?

Last year I didn't hear about my grant until January... After applying in July. Agh!

Yeah if you get the grant, you should get a letter. You'll then have to bring it to the fees office in DCU maybe? Then you should get the money back in a while I think...

Sometimes some of the DCU stuff goes down at night (eg. timetables) so try again today? Registration doesn't start til midday today. I assume you'll beable to register for orientation for a while yet? Be prepared for some registration problems also... welcome to the ridiculous world of DCU!

Ah I love DCU 'n all, but when you've got a problem it often takes a while to get sorted out....
Aye, I'm doing the MA in Political and Public Communication. What are you doing?

I was in DCU today actually, and checked with the fees office re: grant and payment of fees.

Basically, any balance that you have left to pay (I get €6200-ish funded of my €8200-ish so I have €2000-ish balance) must be paid in September. (So at least I won't have anything to pay then in January.)

When you register online you specify how much you want to pay (so I put in my €2000-ish) and then, as soon as possible, send the fees office a copy of the letter from the County Council with proof of the grant, otherwise they could block your account or something, because they'll think you didn't pay the fees.

I've an awful feeling it will go wrong somewhere down the line...

    Have people had success registering?
I'm waiting for my thesis results in a fortnight so can't register til then which is a bit annoying...

Sorry yeah, my bad. It's been open for continuing students since the middle of the week there. I'm still on the undergrad mailing list so got me dates mixed up.
