Smoochy Dinners - Your favourite good value haunt

I go to dinner with my girlfriend frequently. I don't drink and she does so am always looking for places to go North Co Dublin or city center. We kind of settled on La Cucina in Howth and its 50/60 euro for 2 with starters etc included. Findlater for post dinner drinks too.

We had a nice early bird in Dobbins before going to stand -up one night and 25 euro a head was most excellent.

We will go for barfood if its good and she wants a few pints of guinness and I want a steak. Kettles on the Asbourne Swords Rd do a nice steak.

Getting a bit bored so whats good and reasonable around - Tex-Mex , Italian, Mediteranian etc.

I find eating out in Dublin to be a very bland experience. It's always overpriced and the food is always just average. It's a generalisation, but I don't spend enough time in Dublin to dig around and find a favourite place.

But I'm almost always disappointed when I eat out in the city centre in particular.

Mario's in Ranelagh is nice.Good food.Last time I was in it 2 starters,2 mains and a bottle of good wine cost under €70.

I hate to tell of this place but... '1014' on the coast road, opposite the wooden bridge onto Bull Island. Food is stunningly good and reasonable too.

If you are a fan of indian food, poppadom on the rathgar rd just before rathgar village. It's been a while since I've been there but the food and service is second to none. Really nice setting too, perfect for taking your wife/girlfriend there or even a group of friends

If you are heading out that way, go the 10 minutes over to Ashbourne village and try Cork's 3 Course Meal Deal for €25. It is worth the drive. Can get busy so could be worth booking it.

Bloody Stream in Howth, under the Dart Station is worth checking out for bar food, mostly sea food.

+1 for Kinara. Grab an earlybird sitting then finish off the night with a few beers in the Sheds.

The House in Howth is great value for very tasty food with proper gent sized portions.
In town there is Acapulco on Georges St, just up from Cafe Bar Deli, which again gives good portions and decent prices along with very good service.

For the purposes of showing my girlfriend this thread could you please state that there are both non-seafood and vegetarian options at this place please!

I've been meaning to go there as loads of people have recommended it and it's not far from me either.

I'm also a fan of Baan Thai in Ballsbridge, great choice of dishes and very friendly service.

I can't vouch for the existance of vegetarian dishes but they I can say, hand on heart, the fillet beef steak is divine. They have a very varied menu and the occasional little 'sample dish' from the chef. The house red (two months ago) is also wonderful. I'd picked it off the winelist before I discovered that it's their house choice too. :)
Staff are good, friendly, knowlegable and most importantly totally unpretensious.

You also get the 'good karma' feeling as you leave realising that a chunk of your cash is going to a charity.

The only drawback to the place is the noise level. Tiny tiny complaint and that won't stop me from going there again and again.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I'm a lady (the man in my username qualifies me to post here :P) but just thought I'd share; Monty's of Katmandu on Eustace street in Temple bar is particularly good. 3 courses for two people and a bottle of wine for €75. Super food too.

You can't enjoy a good meal without a good woman beside you.

Zaytoons on Parliment St. has the best kababs this side of Iran.

Can get a variety of Kabab meals for about a tenner, with chips and coke and lots of garlic sauce mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Just thought I'd throw in a recession meal for good messure.
But it really is nice. None of your Abrawhatever for me no thank you.:D.

Haven't been to the one in Temple Bar, but Monty's on Rathgar Rd is great. The tables are a little cramped, but the food more than makes up for it.

My top 3: Peploes on the Green, Bijou in Rathgar or Diep off Pembroke Street.

Which reminds me, been too long since I was in Diep!

If you're in Dublin, The Cedar Tree is a great spot. Lebanese food, great service, nice place. It's that little bit different, which I like. There's a few other places, but for the life of me, I can't think of them at the moment - I haven't been out for a nice meal in Dublin in ages. :o

For those out of the pale, and more specificly, towards Waterford, my favorite place (I think, even with all my travels) is a little Italian cafe called Harlequins. Been going there for nearly three years now, fantastic every time. Was there last night and all - It's nice and small, staff are great. Everything cooked in front of you, everything fresh. The only place I could compare it to in Dublin is L'enotica (sp?) in Inchicore - though it's far far better :)

If you like that, but want something more formal, La Taverna on High St. is run by the same folk, it's a more flashy, but still down-to-earth good food. Can't complain. Prices aren't the worst either - I just prefer how informal Harlequins is.

Add L'Athmosphere to the Waterford list - French place, lovely food. Nice place too. Early bird = three courses and a glass of wine for a score, but order from the A La Carte, and the portions are waaaaay bigger (not that there's anything wrong with the Early Bird sizes!) Main waiter is a bit snooty, but the rest of the staff are grand.

Hmm. . . I dont really know Dublin restaurants all that well, but all is forgiven as I am not a Dub :pac:. But here is what I do know

Shanghri La - Stoneybatter, D7. A bit small and not the prettiest but damn fine food.

Trentuno's - Castleknock, D15. Real nice. and not too overpriced.

Bar food in the crown plaza, Blanchardstown D15 is good too!

Edit:Fajitas just put me to total shame, and him a culchie too! :o

Not at all, shur three of mine are in the sticks!

I guess I'll throw in one of my old favorites :)

Mongolian BBQ in Temple Bar, all you can eat - I think the Early Bird is 17 quid and 24 quid after 7 - It's the exact same for both. It's great because you put together your own grub and they barbeque it. You only have to put in what you like - There's veggie/seafood options too, along with plenty of meat and veg.

Fair enough selection of wine afaik (I don't drink wine - Stick to my beers :) ) Again, it's that bit different. Some fantastic flavours in there. Just be warned, the spices are spicy.

Head across the river to Sín É for post dinner drinks and a bit of craic then.

Was in dire need of roast beef carvery after your boastfullness. Kettles is a little culchie enclave on the backroad between Swords and Ashbourne and favoured by farming types. They do country vegatables too and know what you mean if you say spuds..

La Mère Zou at Stephens Green is a great little haunt I've been to on a few occasions. Nice cosy atmosphere, candle lights... and a truly amazing foie gras terrine that needs to be tasted to be believed.

Best Creme Brulee I've had outside of Paris also.

Speaking of Stephen's Green, I think Wagamama's is really great.

It's not too expensive and the food is amazing.

Not really that romantic though. It's definitely a great place to grab dinner with a few friends due to the canteen like seating. The food is very good and prepared very fast. There's nearly always a queue out the door, but the turnaround of patrons is so fast that you are never waiting more than 10 minutes. The bench like seating also insures that groups of odd numbers don't waste seats at even numbered tables.

I was really looking forward to the Cedar Tree but had a very bad meal there. I probably just had an off night there but that is all one needs really

My two favourite restaurants, in Dublin, are no more
Mash in Rathmines and the Steak and Fish place at the end of Ranleagh (upstairs, can not remember name now)

Usually cook at home as there is only really a choice of Chinese/Indian/Insert other overseas.
Why can we not get places, outside Temple Bar, that make proper Irish grub?

That's a shame - It really does only take one off night though :(

With the Mongolian BBQ, you either like it or you don't. I do, you can have a bit of banter putting your dish together, you get the food you want, and don't have to take anything you don't like, so you're not going to be picking or leaving food behind. I like what's there aswell.

I suppose it's not romantic, but then again, romance isn't everyone's scene! It's good for a casual bite to eat, where you can just talk and relax a bit :)

    Lol!

Funny story. We'd often call McDonalds 'The Golden Arches' taking the piss, and have a bit of a wind up for people not in on the joke, saying it's a really well-to-do Chinese restaurant, top notch food, and all the rest. One of the lads mentioned it in work, and one of the other chaps working there thought it was hilarious, and told his brother about it.

Said brother also thought it was hilarious, and told his then girlfriend they were going to the Golden Arches that Saturday night. She turned up in her best clothes, dolled up to the nines. Hair done and all.

He went home a single man. :D

Sorry to hijack the thread but what recommendations can be made for a dinner for a small group of friends in Dublin. Somewhere a bit upmarket with good food and a decent selection of wine. Something along the lines of Dobbins but but with decent portions :D :pac:

I'd recommend any of these in the city centre

    Fire - Dawson Street
    Bang - Merrion Row
    L'Ecrivain - Baggot Street
