    From gamescom:

    http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/08/18/live-from-gamescom-scee-press-conference/

    18:36
Jem Alexander: Kaz has left the stage, to thunderous applause.
    18:35
    Jem Alexander: Like, right now.
    18:35
Jem Alexander: The price has also JUST dropped for all current PS3s on the shelf.
    18:35
Jem Alexander: It will be available for 299 euros, 299 dollars and 29,980 yen.
    18:35
    Jem Alexander:

smaller, lighter, all the same features your current PS3 has
    18:34
    Jem Alexander: How's this for a description: it's a PS3, but slimmer
    18:34
Jem Alexander: From which he picks up the new slimmer PS3, available in the first week of September
    18:33
    Jem Alexander:

He's walked over to the unused podium at the side of the stage.

    e7b4799c-2001-4f50-b68c-26c6f24a1a4f_400.jpg

Other sites say half the width, 34% less power consumption, 32% smaller, 36% lighter.

It's not like sony has raped europe in the ass in terms of pricing before? Feck, they all do it.

Love Ellie Gibsons commentary on eurogamer. Much better looking at the direct feed there. I want to marry that girl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

Seriously guys, a straight dollar to euro symbol change isn't news. It sucks, but it's always the way its been.

    Here's a bigger pic:

    ps3-slim-big-1.jpg

Still waiting on detailed spec, like width/height/depth/weight, maybe sound level which Sony sometimes includes.

A couple of real life shots, with stand. Looks way thinner.

    6215296_blog017.jpg

I wonder if the stand is necessary to have it vertical, or optional like the ps2's. It looks nice though in the stand.

Did they even mention the size of the HDD? If mine breaks and there a problem with Argos UK (Got it In NI) itsnice to know I won't have to pay 400e anyway

    The HDD is 120GB.

    Ps2 compatible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭zuroph

finally time for me to get one then.

I don't like that new PS3 logo. The "Spiderman" font on the old one was much nicer.

You think they are keeping it a secret? Would have been hard, in fairness, to cut the cost of a PS3 build and reduce the sales price if they had to add any extra components?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Wonder if it will be much quieter than the current one.

It's as loud as a hoover!

    Is not!

    Seriously though, it isn't.

When the fan really kicks in, which happens all the time it is loud as hell.

    Again, nope.

Just my opinion but always thought there was a concensus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

In the press release they say it has reduced fan noise.

    Also:

    Power consumption : Approx. 250W

    External dimensions

    (excluding maximum projecting part )

    Approx. 290 × 65 × 290 mm (width × height × length)

    Mass

    Approx. 3.2kg

So it's square now. And much thinner. Comparison shots:

    3833615213_2c582aab60.jpg

    3834410088_48a94f1b44.jpg

Wifi is still in there too.

They're also getting rid of the spiderman logo. They're reverting to the classic PlayStation 3 and the new logo on the slim according to the PR.

The only tradeoff I can see is that the new system won't allow installation of other OS (Linux).

My one isn't but my friends is i think its cause its a 60gb model...and you should here the Xbox 360 if you think the PS3 is loud!

I would def buy it if it was backwards compatible...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭heebusjeebus

From the look of the back of the ps3 slim, the power connector hints that the power supply is external. If this is gonna be like the monsterous one with the xbox, i'll prefer my ol' PS3 Big.

Yeah, mine is the same, especially in the warm weather. I seldom hear it during the winter, except on long game sessions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Hmmmm... looks like mine is just wrecked then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54,945 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

any news on the backwards compatibility
I would love it ,love it to have it

    also any release date

ill be getting it for sure

Tis thinner than a PS2 original. PS2 was over 7cm thick, this is 6.5cm thick at the thickest point, and gets thinner toward the edges cos of the curve.

Also, the spec seems to suggest the power supply is still internal. It just lists a regular power lead in the accessories, not an adaptor/brick.

edit - also, the spec says no PS2 compatibility.

    It's being released Sept 1.

Ah, then I'm pretty impressed! Some engineering effort in getting all the fire and brimstone in that small package!
Suppose the Gen 2 of Blu Ray drives are smaller.

Come on, it's not that ugly. Doesn't look like the bastard offspring of a radiator and 80's CD player.

What I don't get is, why are they taking features away as the evolve their console?

60gb had media card functionality, that's gone.

    Now you can't install Linux.

    Like wtf are they at!

The price is a crock of crap as well but all the manufacturers are at it so it's not like getting buggered on price is anything new to the EU gamers.

Didn't it have like 6 USBs as well?

Any word on how many USB ports on the slim?

    To actually reduce the price?

Anyway, higher minimum wage, VAT etc etc. You know its not as straight forward as simply converting from the US price. Not saying we don't get F'edin the A - a just saying it isn't by as much as it looks on face value.

2 USB on the Slim. Am I right in thinking that the bottom right panel (where all the logos are) is where the HDD is kept? I hope that can still be swapped.

Meh, more USBs would've been the only thing I'd felt like I was missing out on.

Also I think it looks crap, but that's just me. :)

Neither the Wii or 360 reduced what their product's capabilities when they reduced the price.

Think I might finally pick up a PS3 when this comes out - size and price are nice, and the 120gb HDD is great (considering my standard 20gb Xbox is really feeling the strain of good downloadable games!). Would have liked PS2 compatibility though, although was never going to happen - annoying to have to keep another console hooked up for my Persona cravings!

The only thing I don't like about it is the position of the logo on the top. Other than that it's a very clean discreet looking piece of kit. I certainly wouldn't say that it is ugly, not by any stretch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    Gah.. it's horrible!

I paid €299 for my "fat" model. So not too bothered with the the "slim". At least until my current one breaks down.

is this photo to scale? it's actually wider standing up than the fat one. granted, they probably needed the room somewhere but i don't like it.

i'd prefer to have the shiny black monster standing up on my desk, looming over everything around it than have that skinny thing lying around. ps3s are supposed to me impressive and imposing, that slim one looks like you could stick a blunt knife through it.

FFS, they are removing Linux support:mad:

Not that a console should be used just for Linux, but the
ability to utilise the cell processor under Linux was nice.

Good going sony. No money from me now.

    Epic fail Sony.
What the **** use is the cell architecture now?

Wouldn't you already have a PS3 if you wanted to use Linux on it. The older models aren't going to vanish overnight either.

Wrong. The PS3 was very well suited for parallel computation.
Better to buy a cluster of PS3's, install Linux, and perform
complex number crunching. Cray supercomputers are not cheap.
