    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/14/afghanistan-womens-rights-rape

It is now ok for a husband to deny food to a woman if she refuses to satisfy him.
The original version of the law legalised rape within marriage, but got pulled back because it was internationally condemned.

    Sooo....

....how is democracy that much better than the Taliban?

If those Afghan ladies don't like it, why don't they just call a general election and vote the fcuker out?

    No it's not.

That law only refers to Shia people, 20% of the population.

    Get your facts right.

Oh, well that's ok then ...
They should have gone with the legal rape instead, now they'll be starving and still have to put out eventually. Honestly, some folk just want to have their cake and eat it.

yeah the right way to help these women is to make a mockery of them...... op this is wayy to serious for AH. As a woman I find that type of crap really upsetting tbh I think I'm going to puke. If women ruled that fcuk of a country do you think ass raping would be allowed? - these men are no more than animals, dirty filthy raping bastard5. IMO

maybe if there was more ass sex allowed there would be no need for legilsation like this. it's give and take, and take.

you might be on to something Red, but if more personal hygiene on the part of these mullahs was used maybe the women might be more likely to "give it up" to what did Bruno call them "filthy wizards" the dumb fcuks. Its no wonder these poor women are setting themeselves on fire and drinking bleach, what a horrible horrible existance. OP to answer your question no they shouldn't be allowed rule themselves, look what happened in Africa after that happened, hell in a handbasket. I went for a ciggy and I'm still fuming, I'm off to write an angry letter to someone.

Its not much better than the Taliban right now, but given time, things could change. The democratic systems at least allows a oppurtunity to change, which did not exisit under the Taliban. So, basically democracy at least allows the possibility of change, even if it is slow.

Women in the west just don't appreciate how fortunate they are. And they still always complain.

I am with Hells Belle on this. Women in Afghanistan had absolutely no basic human rights under Taliban rule. There was some hope when President Karzai was elected, but now, what ever limited rights women began to enjoy are being gradually eroded I find it quite sickening that people can trivialise and make silly jokes about this very sad state of affairs.

The Irish could learn a little from this: Democracy is not automatically a good thing; rights and freedoms are more important.

You are looking to be biatch slapped, still living at home by any chance? Say that to your nearest female relation, actually the nearest female will do, but not your blow up one, and see what they think. FAIL.

That's about 5 million Shia, still a significant number.
Afghanistan is catching up to Saudi Arabia, maybe the worst country in the world when it comes to mistreating their women.

I guess they are sad, but I've got to confess really don't care about these Afghan women or their rights. Is that morally bad? probably, but it's true. I care more about what I'm having for Supper than the fact that these women might be denied food altogether, you know the proof of that? I'm actually going to do something about supper but I'm not going to do a tap (other than post on these message boards) about the Afghan women.

Who of the morally outraged is actually going to do more for these women than that? Anyone here putting off supper to come up with something? Who cares? Not aiming that at you Dinkers or your genuine compassion, I just think it's very easy get outraged on the internet.

Yes. In our area, they generally seem to have separate polling stations though. As another thought, some 50% of girls in Afghanistan now go to school. Under the Taliban, that figure was "0%". As these more educated girls grow up and become educated women, it's likely that in the long term, womens' rights in Afghanistan will become more entrenched. Cultural change in this country is going to take a lot longer than just turfing out the old dictator and putting a democratically elected chap in his place. To a very large extent, this country is still in the 18th century. Just they've discovered mobile 'phones.

I went for a ciggy and I'm still fuming, I'm off to write an angry letter to someone.

if you want to change - or more correctly, to enable change - read MM's post, then send that letter to your TD, your local paper and the nationals.

tell them that you want Ireland's political class to stop fcuking about and whining from the sidelines, and send a full, 1000 man Irish Battlegroup to Afghanistan to provide security for a PRT and the schools and elections that it enables.

more ISAF soldiers - more teachers that live - more female pupils who get educated - more females who vote - less likely that this **** becomes law.

    simple, direct correlation.

that is, unless, you believe in supporting Afghan women by every means possible, short of actual help.

Karzai has done little to make Afghanistan a democractic state with equal right for women. He is beholden to Warlords as well as shia fundamentalists. He recently had to allow Dostum back into the country or risk losing the support of his followers which could swing the election his way.
So if he wins the upcoming election it will be thanks mainly to these cretins. He has presided over a cessipt of corruption with his brothers amassing dubious fortunes on the back of his rule. As you say there is the mechanism for things to improve but it wont happen as long as Karzai is relying on Warlords.
