I might be doing the Evening degree in the Autumn, still a bit unsure as it is a major time commitment.

I know a few people that are doing/have done the evening degree and all found it very worthwhile. Law is probably less hours than anything else, even by night

What are the hours like in first year? Are they spread out well?

law (clinical) for me! going into second year, the only problem is the 4 hour breaks, which is grand if you live nearby, not so much if you live on the other side of the city!the long breaks are a novelty first, but then they drag!3 day week this year though so can't complain!:D

It is confusing if you don't know what you're looking at!

These links will help you understand it a little better...

    Building Codes

    Modules

These will clear things up a bit for you!

XboxHero, don't worry about the timetable!check out the ucc.ie/law website, look up resources for current students, and look up tutorials/timetables and it'll give you a much simpler version of the timetable and really easy to follow!:)

How many in a class usually?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,581 ✭✭✭Same As

Theres normally around 120 in the Straight Law Class, around 30/40 doing languages, and this year with the new Clinical and International law degrees, the total in 1st year would be around the 200 mark...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 268 ✭✭Fuascailt

Whaaat?!?!? Its never seemed that big! I would say 120 including Straight/Languages and Erasmus people max. And are Clinical and International creating new places, or just taking places from the straight BCL?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,581 ✭✭✭Same As

There is definitely around 120 (give or take 2/3) in each of the straight Law classes anyway, the numbers in the Law + Languages varies due to the high drop out rate in the languages but is roughly 30 as far as I know...

As regards the new international and clinical programs, Im pretty sure its extra places for students rather than taking places from the BCL program. The points for straight Law dropped in the CAO - should places have been taken from the BCL program, points requirements would have indefinitely risen as there would have been surplus demand for the supply of fewer places.

    From ucc.ie
Competition for places on the newly offered law degree programmes was intense. The BCL Clinical (CK305) which offers clinical placements to undergraduate law students accepted students at 520 points while the BCL International (CK306) which provides students with an opportunity to study abroad, had a cut off range of 540 points.

Haha, it seems smaller because a lot of people don't show up to lectures.:P When I was in 1st year the class size in the mandatory modules i.e. Constitutional, Criminal and Intro to Legal Systems, was over 140 anyways.

As for anybody going into law this year, don't worry, everyone is in the same boat. I'd recommend spending a lot of 1st term making friends, going out on the class nights out and living the college lifestyle. Besides, Law has one of the sweetest timetables in UCC. Roughly 14 hours a week including tutorials (for straight law that is). You can't beat a day off on a Friday to recover from Thursday night.:D

Collins cutouts are exclusively for cmt members... or the next highest bidder. Yea, i'm the vice chair, guess i've lost myself my anonymity!!

Everyone in Law is automatically joined to Lawsoc, they have to make no effort! Should be a good year for Law Soc though. Philosph on a Monday, YFG tuesday and Lawsoc Wednesday- Theres your week sorted!

Headin in2 second yr dis year! I would advise anyone in first year to pick tort as their optional module! I did one of the other things and totally regret it now! If you get it out of the way now you have more subject choices in second year (and third as a result) and if you play your cards right you have mondays AND fridays off in second yr! Ya cant beat that! Now Im stuck with a 9am lecture on monday instead....:(
