was gonna say a 530i A/T. All things to all men.

I am torn between 530i and 735i, the 7 is not so powerful with all the extra weight, but it is extremely comfortable and they usually have lots of extras.

Check out Unkel's 735 for sale on adverts.ie. I test drove a 740 a few months ago, and it was lovely to drove though the OBC was showing 11mpg.

    Audi A8 3.7 litre Bi-turbo:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200910192043965

Bit of a Q car and should be able to buy it close to budget.

Lexus LS430, might get one advertised around a shade under 10, bit of haggling should get it for 8.

Would you get a Lexus LS300 for that money actually? I think it looks a little fresher. Nice comfy car, if a little wallow-y.

    How about a Soarer/SC400 or SC300?

LOL, wouldn't be the first time that the truth has been twisted a bit on an advert but that is taking the piss.

That Audi is a D2 A8, with the 2000+ facelift.

Has different headlights and grille to the pre 2000 models,
    minor differences.

And there wasn't no 3.7 V8 bi-turbo available from Audi then either,
I'd say the poor boy is getting confused with the 2.7 V6 bi-turbo :D

    Have a 1999 S8 myself, I prefered the pre-facelift models.
Probably the best single car I've ever driven, it does everything
you could ask of it, and then some.....

    From memory, that model A8 had either a 2.8 V6 or a 3.7 or a 4.2 V8, all NA.

There is a nice 530i (2002 I think) on adverts.ie with a BMW individual colour

For me it would have to be a 740 M-Tech or an S8, end of! And to be honest I would rather the pre-02 models to the new models any day, even if money was no issue!

    Don't buy a e38 735i/e39 535i, they are slow.
    A 530i is quicker than a 535i...

There is a few 740i quiet cheap on Carzone.

Thanks for the plug, but the car has long gone :)

@OP - there really is very little between the 735 and the 740, go for whichever is the best one you can find. Make sure you do not buy a pre 1996 car (check tax disc to be sure. Don't get a 3.0l or 4.0l car, only a 3.5l or 4.4l car). If you want some reading why not, google "BMW nikasil" :)

Not really. The 6 pot in the 530 makes it a good bit lighter than the V8 in the 535 but the latter has more power and torque. The performance differences between 530 manual, 530 auto and 535 auto are miniscule, with the 535 auto being quicker than the 530 auto but slower than the 530 manual on paper. But we all know manual figures can not be replicated in real life, so the 535 is quite likely the fastest of the 3

And the straight six BMW is a superb engine, but it is very hard to like it more than a V8 in a large saloon :D

Also, the V8 is less likely to go wrong and will last longer.

    Edit: OP - I had an e38 735 V8 auto for 5 years

Defo a comfortable car and very quick but its not in the same league as a V8 luxobarge. Mostly due to it being a manual and fwd.

Also need oil changes every 6k as they suffer from oil seperation and sludgeing. Only buy one with a Saab service history as its the only way to know if the oil has been changed regluarly.

v8 a bit much for me was looking at fuel consumption people report as low as 11mpg  lets stick with 6 cylinder

Lexus GS300. Very nice cruiser. Was comtemplating one instead of a 5 series, but I prefered the handling of the e39.

I reckon those would all be in the e38, but it's now 2 models old (finished in 2001 I think).

Before you automatically rule out a big engine, work out the difference in running costs and the difference in purchase prices between the two of them. If you spend a couple of grand more on a smaller engine, you might be waiting a while to recoup that in running costs, and all that time you could be stuck with an engine that's not suited to the car.

oh i agree completely i love v8 used to have an e39 m5 back in the good days , but the way things are going no one wants them anymore cant sell them on and road tax is a joke

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Very nice, I'd love one of them.

Is the road tax on a 3.0 and a 4.4 not the same though? Also - the depreciation is a killer, but you're probably paying much less in the first place.

A 530 might be a good call, but I'd say it could be hard to go to a normal e39 after having the M5.

What about an e39 3.0L diesel. Fast, luxury and under 8K.

Although it'd probably be too depressing after the M5.

Or if you want the ultimate in road presence

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/BMW/8-Series/840ci-Sp/200846190879454/advert?channel=CARS

Its been for sale for ever, might get a few quid off to get it under budget. Probably be a future classic also.

TBH the e32 has these, and that dates back to the 80's!

What the guys are referring to is the e38. Arguably better looking than it's more modern counterparts and certainly more reliable.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E38

OP you could go balls out and get a Jaguar XJR :D
    +1 on the e31/8series

for some reason dealers still charge more for the bigger engine cars with a few high mileage exceptions , ya hard to get used to anything after M5 but have to be a bit more sensible the fuel consumption was unreal a 530i would be a walk in the park after it

    You're 100% right, I'm sorry, I was a bit misleading on that!
I was referring to the engine specifically, I meant that he was just
getting confused with the different power units.

    2.7 bi-turbo was in the S4, RS-4, A6 & A6 Allroad.
I have a feeling that in the states there was a A4 2.7 bi-turbo FWD,
but I'm not sure on that!

    There was however a 2.5TDI V6 and a 3.3TDI V8 fitted in the D2 A8,
but I don't know if these models were ever available in RHD.
I'd say they'd make a fantastic everyday car!

    You are correct.

    Cartell has for this car:

    Registration 01KE11271
    Make AUDI
    Model A8
    Description 3.7 QUATTRO 260BHP 04DR A
    Fuel Type PETROL

    260bhp from a 3.7 = 70bhp/litre = non-turbo

Mercedes 430 engine is a V8 but the block is aluminium so its lighter and will get mpg in the mid to high 20's (depending on car and right foot)

    I have a 1999 Audi S8, 4.2 V8 340 bhp.
With XS Direct, excess of €1000.
Full comprehensive, open driving, glass cover and business use.
1 years no claims bonus (damn those vans!)

I'm paying €850 on a 1.5 almera at the moment, stuck the audi in to my current insurers site for example €1950:( @ 24, 25 next month so may make a difference

edit: what age are you if you don't mind my asking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭ikillcopiers

I'll be 27 in September, I have that Audi since November.
I had a sports car before it too, but I have that moved
over to a classic policy now.

25 does make a difference, but don't pay any heed to those websites,
    they're completely useless.
I've never seen a quote off them less than 3000.

To be honest, €1950 on a high powered car at 24 is not too bad.
I paid around that with zero no claims on my first "car" at 25,
2.5 turbo with same cover as I mentioned in my earlier post.

Every year I sit down and ring about 15 insurance companies and
    brokers.

It takes a long time, but it's the only thing that works.....

The big problem you'd have is if you've had a conviction in that last 5 years.
It used to be 3 years, but now the insurance companies are asking back 5 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,380 ✭✭✭daRobot

How's day to day life with the S8?

Why not a 5 liter, tax is not much different than a 3 liter, there are bargains about too, I was offered a 2000 CL500, lovely nick, 6 months tax, new tyres, fsh, 1 years NCT left for 5K last week!
