Fantasy vs. Reality

“Fantasies are more than substitutes for unpleasant reality; they are also dress rehearsals, plans. All acts performed in the world begin in the imagination.” -- Barbara Grizzuti Harrison

From fantasy sports teams to fantasy gaming to sexual fantasies, it's clear that we love and look for any way to escape reality -- or enhance it somehow. But how close are your fantasies to your reality?

I've always enjoyed daydreaming, but it's always about something that I can do/be/might actually end up happening. I suppose I can relate a bit more when it comes to games, especially when it comes to role playing and picking all star teams and such, but it's a little different seeing as how in games, there's often a specific purpose/set of rules/etc. For me it's not as much fun if it's something that can't be attained; I've always found that an amazing version of reality would be much better than any far out fantasy.

So for you, are fantasies just fantasies? Or do you daydream with the intent of somehow achieving the desires you admit to yourself?

To answer your question...well, it depends on the type of fantasies. I s'pose a lot of things begin as fantasies that are acheivable with work ( getting good exam results, blagging your dream job, etc) Some of my more 'routine' fantasies have become reality because I put effort into making them happen. :D

Others, I'm afraid, such as bonking Johnny Depp, will unfortunately just remain in my head...;)

I want to be a superhero. With real superpowers. I wanna be able to fly and lift cars over my head and shoot fire from my hands or something! I'm 23 and I want to be Superman. Pathetic? Nope. I'm an optimist. :D

That's kind of the principle from the Secret. Our thoughts become our future reality. I really want that to be true because I fantasise about a better job, holidays, a better standard of living.

Most of my imaginings go to conversations that will probably never happen. Usually about things I don't have the balls to say, or to people who are no longer there to talk to.

Aside from those, most of my daydreams are closer to your average "when I win the lotto" type. If I didn't have to go to work, holidays I could take, bands I could see (while renting for my own private party, mind you ;)) and places I could travel.

Those ones are also quite unattainable. My reality is quite predictable in a completely disorganised kind of way. I don't think I tend to spend time fantasising about that which 'may' be.

Maybe I'll discover, having read this thread, that I do. But off the top of my head, at time of posting, I have to say no.

I guess there's a thin line between fantasy and a kind of visualizing yourself doing better - as per your examples.

But now, what if Johnny Depp showed up and wanted to get down and dirty? Would you jump on the chance, or would it be weird because, you know, it's only good as a fantasy? Does that make sense?

I suppose it might be a silly example because, well, it's Johnny Depp(!), but I guess the case might be true in any sexual fantasy -- do you actually want it to happen, or is it just something you think about for fun?

I'm 30 and want superpowers, sometimes I think just a little part of my brain thinks I do have them. Occasionally when I want to pick something up I almost hold my hand out and will it to me Jedi style, there is a tiny part of me that is shocked that I can't actually do it.:(

Fantasies for me are just fantasies. They're things I just think, fleeting thoughts of wonder. If I think something and actually want it happen, I'd consider that a goal because I'd be aiming for it.

Hey, sexual fantasies count as well! In fact, I think they're a bit more interesting . . . I get the feeling that a lot of people can have sexual fantasies all day long, but not necessarily actually want what you're thinking about. (Which throws me off a bit!)

Not in your case, clearly -- I get the feeling that if you had the chance to have a threesome or have sex with a girl of a different race, you'd go for it! :p
