Seeing how the last one went so well here we go again :)

Its 1994 and you've just got a new job as a country wide rep with a large, well paying multi-national. Head of transport presents you with a list of cars you can have . Which one would you pick?

While I like the look of the Rover, I'd probably go for the Volvo. Sturdy and reliable.

    VW Passat 1.8cl
    Mondeo!

But I'd have a look at this too:

    1571_05p10nissanprimera1995.jpg

Preferably a 2.0 SLX or maybe an eGT

Best car by miles and miles and miles in 1994 was the mondeo.

You missed the second best one though, and the car Ford more or less copied: The Nissan Primera.

Going on the pics above, I'll take the 2 seater convertible Rover 600 :D.

It was a bit dated at the time but I'd take the 405, unless the Passat was available as an estate.

I'm going for the car of the year for 1993, the Toyota Carina!!!! :D

Likewise except for me I inherited mine from my uncle when he was getting his new car..:P and that had 200,000 miles on it when I left Ireland a few months ago.

I'm going against the grain here. I'd choose the Laguna. I know they have reliability issues but as the OP says we are choosing a company car here so somebody else is paying the bills :)

    A family member got a Rover 620TI (200BHP turbo) as a company car in '95 :D

@Saab Ed - there was no Rover 618 in '94, the smallest engine was the 116BHP 2l in the 620

Back in 94 I thought the Rover was the best looking of the lot. In fact I also loved the Maza 626 hatchback in that era too as something far ahead of its time (which stagnated or got worse after that).

In retrospect the Carina was the best though, it aged well and its continuing popularity as a taxi and excellent reliability record proves it. It was a solid drive too. The rover looked classy though back in the day...

Despite sharing most of the mechanicals/suspension design/basic design with the previous model, the 1988 Carina II

For me, has to be the Primera - Great handling, bulletproof reliability and a small bit of go from the Paddy friendly 1.6. They didn't have a 1.8 until late 1999. The looks were the same as the rest - bland for all of them.....

That was just in Ireland mind, a country that has a strange following for the brand.

My choice would be the Peugeot 405. They both looked and drove fantastic.

Anything under 2litres is rubbish :)

I had a 3.2ton VW LT31 with a 6cyl 2.4litre Diesel. Stick a couple of madresses in the back and it's the perfect student autocamper / festival car.

Lovely solid car. I've only driven 2 and both had a very heavy clutch pedal. I didn't like that at all. Did they all have that?

I voted for the Rover - nice place to be in.

Well the 1990 Audi 100 is still going strong so I dunno why I need a downgrade ;)

I chose the Pug 405 as its as good a drive as its smaller sibbling, that said in the real world I sat in one once and discovered that even with the seat fully back I was slightly short of leg-room while the headlining brushed my hair (that is less of an issue generally these days :( )

To be fair, very few are choosing the Laguna because we all know it had terrible problems. If this poll was done in '94 the Laguna would probably come first. The poor unsuspecting owners never knew what was about to hit them...

The MkI Laguna was much more reliable than the dire MKII though. You even still see a fair few MkIs about. Definately the best looking car of the era.

^^^ Indeed. Even at the time, I recall Autocar giving it the thumbs up especially for private buyers v the Mondeo. And we know how the British motoring press love to go overboard on praise for most new Fords.

    1994 Honda Accord:
    AETV28227825_1b.jpg

I had a 1994 one of these as a company car for 2 years up to about 9 years ago. The company I worked for at the time bought it new and over the years it was passed down to the noobies of the company. It was very nice to drive and never had an issue. Very underrated car at the time, overshadowed by it's posher sister the Rover 600. I think the fact that the smallest engine at the time was 2.0 litre and it cost more than your average Mondeo, Vectra or Carina never made it a fleet favorite.

BTW, why is the Opel Vectra not on the list? Surely they would have on any fleet list at the time?

It nearly made the list but it was just about to be replaced in 94 and was really a very dated product by then. Thats why I left it off. ( Mind you in Diamond spec it did have the toys )

Neither of it was right, beyond the Saab 9-5 being crap bit. It was the Saab 900 (Mk. 2 I believe), later Saab 9-3, that was based on Open Vectra chassis.

Saab 900 Mk. I was a legend, especially the Turbo Aero :)

I'll be voting for the Rover too, as said though the 1.8 was not available at the time. I had one a few years back, a 1999 one with full leather and all extras, savage car. Bought for €2300 off a dealer in Dublin in 2006 and sold in 2007 for €3500 privately in Cork. I reckon I may well buy another one, great cars.
