    Hi,

Can anyone give me some info about Whitehall please?

What it's like? In general and to live in. Is it far from the city? What the public transport like there (Whitehall, not the city, lol)?

In particular the Swords Road area? Also, is Plunkett College good?

    Thanks.

Orlaith - us good folk of the north county wouldn't consider Whitehall to be part of us!! It may be more beneficial to post in the Dublin City Forum. ;)

Sorry, I didn't realize Whitehall was in the City (:o), cos when I checked Wiki earlier it said Whitehall was on the North side.

Thanks for clearing this up, I'll ask a mod/admin to move the topic.

Whitehall aint the worst area. Could be better though.

RE: Plunkets, It depends on what your looking for. I attended the School for Five years and would only recomened it for adult/night time courses. If your thinking of sending a son id think twice.

    Thanks.

I want to do the Junior Cert there as I never did my Junior Cert (I left school before my Junior cert due to severe bullying problems within the school, so I have no state exams) and need to sit the last three years of secondary school.

It's for myself (see above paragraph), I have no kids lol, I'm 18 9and female).

    Thanks for your help.

    hey orlaith,

Great idea to return to education absolutely nothing bad will come from your decision to do so..
i did my leaving cert in plunkets on the adult leaving cert course...i went on to do 6 years of 3rd level afterwards...
Plunkets is not perfect but it does the job and if you put the effort in you'll get what you want out of it..
Whitehall is grand, its safe, and basically just your typical busy Dublin area..its about 2.5miles from the city center which is very convenient..
Public transport on the swords road is frequent but coming from Dorset St. direction at peak times can be horribly slow...
    good luck with your plans..

good area imo. best chipper in dublin is the airport takewaway beside the viscount. s has been voted by a few dublin radio phone in shows over the years.

and theres a super bingo hall if you can fit it in between studying!

    Hey Orlaith.

Plunkett's is GREAT for adult learners. Totally 5 star.

Whitehall is ok. It depends where you live. I used to live in Larkhill, wasn't, eh, great. Now I'm in Gaeltacht park, right next to it, and it's just gorgeous here.

To anyone from the area: I was the skinny fair guy from Matt's newsagents (beside the awesome airport takeaway) a few years ago. Chances are that I know your name :)

Thank you so much for all the replies and help/info/recommendations.

As the college is on the Swords Road, that's where I was going to rent somewhere, if I can find somewhere there that is. But if anyone has any recommendations of other areas that aren't far from the college, I'd be happy to know.

And about rent allowance, should I contact my local Coco/Social Welfare Office or the Dublin City CoCo/Social Welfare Office?

    Thanks again.

I went to Plunkett College for my Leaving Cert around the time I turned 18, I was with people my own age and older and it was a great experience, the building itself isn't exactly steller (although it might have changed since I was there in 2006) but the staff are great and very helpful, although the younger students - 13 to 15 year olds -are very rowdy, just like a typical run down secondary school, but you won't see much of them as there is a library in the school and a place caled the 'Mall' where the kids aren't allowed.
    icon7.gif
Good luck, I'm sure you will enjoy it there, and the area is very nice in my opinion, and not too far from the city.icon7.gif

Just don't bother with the awful Whitehall College next door, it might be a cleaner place, but the tutors are horribleicon8.gif. Everyone I know who went there quit after their first year, as did I.

Don't believe that Orlaith, there's nothing al all super about that bingo hall.

There is a bit of a lacking of goods pubs / restaurants, but there is good public transport (lots of bus routes), a smattering of shops (but close to the Omni centre for shops, restaurants, cinema). All in all, not a bad place.

It's real hit and miss. To say it's Dublin's best chipper is wayyyyy off the mark. €2.20 for a bag of chips which is OK. There's a chinese close by too, which isn't bad either.

The 41A,B,C 16 AND 16 A all run up the swords road from town to Plunkets,Whitehall is a grand area, plenty of student accommodation around the area because of DCU

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭ninwilky

I live in whitehall myself and get busses from the swords road everyday

    busses that stop there are

    41 a/b/c city-swords
3 larkhill [whitehall] - cant remember
    16 santry - rathfarnam
    16a airport - rathfarnam
    746 airport - dun laoighare
    33 skerries - town

theres more busses that stop near the garda station on swords road. the nearest train stations are drumcondra or clontarf depending on what line you want, neither are exactly close

as someone said you have omni centre fairly close. lots of shops and take aways

pizza hut, mizzoni, dominoes etc as well as other types of food all deliver to the locality. theres both a post office and a sorting office nearby. croke park is within walking distance if your into that. town is a 40 minute walk if even....

as for the general area id say its grand. obviously keep away from dodgy looking people cause theres a few about. but no more than you'll find anywhere else

hope that helps, just ask if you've any more questions :)

I used to live in Collinswood for 3 years, which is just off Collins Avenue.
Lovely housing estate, no gangs of bored teenagers hanging around terrorising old people.
And the best chipper in Whitehall isnt Airport, its Lido beside the Bingo hall.

Best pub around there (although not the nearest, but it's only a 10 minute walk down Grace Park Rd.) is The Goose Taven, although it's still The Pilot to me. Surpringly lively pub with a surprisingly mixed group. I love popping there.
Avoid The Beaumont House, it's wrong in every way.
Viscount is fine as is The Comet but not my cup of tea.

Airport chipper is good but they must be the scariest looking family ever. Apart fro the sister who is kinda cute...

Living in Gaeltacht Park myself and if you can get a place in there it's perfect.
Viscount is a good drinkin pub but not really somewhere you would spend your saturday night. There is a new restaurant over head, just opened, which is the 3rd in the last 6 months, so I wouldn't hold my breath.Overall great location and nice neighbours..

PS: It helps having a TD living on the road also :)

Ah Rocko in the chipper is pretty cool. Also, you live on my road!

A note on the train to Drumcondra - most people disregard it because it's quite far away and the trains aren't that frequent. However, if you're coming a fair distance from the southside and you time it right, it is really fast. I've used it to get from Dun Laoghaire at rush hour. You're in Drumcondra in 20 minutes and it's only another five minutes up the road by (very frequent) bus.
I've lived here a few years and like the area. Generally very quiet, good facilities. Pubs aren't fantastic, but Drumcondra's good if you don't mind a walk. Other drawback is traffic can be heavy, unless you live away from the main roads. Gaeltacht Park is the nicest part alright.

THing with that is you need to change line at connoly but it does bring you to blanchardstown fairly handily

You don't have to change at Connolly for tha mainline train that goes to Maynooth and, I think on to Longford. You can get it from Dun Laoghaire to Drumcondra with no change

I've always wondered about that pub and have mean't to give it a try over the years - its worth a taxi ride from Dublin 13?.

OP about The Beaumont House - avoid it like the plague, after The Golf Links (O'Dwyers) in Portmarnock its got to have the most unfriendly staff in the country (its reknowned for its awful, rude and surely staff).

WhiteHall, its a grand area. So quite in fact thats its often overlooked by most looking for accomodation on the northside.

Goose a great pub, done the taxi thing from Donaghmede a few times years ago to watch matches in there etc, Beaumont House was the most expensive pub in the area, and with unhappy bar staff to boot!

    Thanks eveyrone.

Going to the college on Wednesday for an interview. Can't wait.

I've been looking on the net an some sites say Plunket is Dublin 11 and others say it Dublin 9.

Can anyone confirm where it's D.9 or D.11 please? I know it says on their website D.9, but I'd like confirmation from someone who knows the area.

    Thanks.

I grew up in D11 and don't know any part of Whitehall which would be considered D11.

I went to the college today and it felt so strange being back in a classroom again lol. I had to write a very small essay and I had no idea what to write, I eventually came up with something, even though it was rubbish.

We're going back up there on Saturday to view a few places, if we can get viewing appts. for Sat that is!
