Ankle discomfort for a newbie jogger

I've recently started jogging and have gradually worked my way up to being able to run 5k. The only problem now is that my ankles are getting fairly stiff and sore and it's making it hard to run. I do stretches before and during my runs and I've also started running on grass rather than concrete paths. Is there anything else I can do to ease the stress on my ankles?

    Thanks.

Isn't it also recommened you should NOT stretch before running but walk or very slowly jog for 10-15 mins to warm-up?

Get a physio to check you out, money well spent imo. And make sure the shoes you use are suitable for running and suit your foot.

Definitely, your much better off warming up the muscles and ligaments first before running. As the last poster stated, walking to jogging is a perfect warm up.
If all else fails then a physiotherapist should examine your biomechanics (how your body moves) while running to see if something is wrong.

In my opinion it may also depend on your footwear. I forked some money on proper running footwear instead of stuff that looks good in the likes of elverys or lifestyle sports, and its worked wonders. It may not be the case for everyone though! It just worked for me!

The verdict is still out on this. I personally don't think stretching should be made completely redundant before running.

I would encourage dynamic drills like high knees, heel kicks, leg sweeps and lunges instead of more static stretches (on the spot stretches) and incorporate these into the warm up.
