Training does not remove tar from your lungs, you might feel better in the short term but the long term damage will still be taking its toll..

kick them and get gains from your training instead of just "cancelling out the smokes-:o"

I agree with L that its better to be exercising and smoking than sitting on the couch smoking, but its absolute nonsense to say exercise cancels anything.

    Seriously.
You are only fooling yourself OP.
The effects of smoking on your health have nowt to do with fitness.

WOW! I think any other posts will be just restating that exercise does NOT cancel out the negitive effects of smoking.

Cowzerp is on the ball. OP give it another while and when you find smoking is holding you back in your training you'll want to quit.

I was in the same boat but found that when training with non-smokers I was feeling sick when they were able to push on. It made me re-assess the situation and realise i was at a serious disadvantage by smoking.

Also -It just aint cool :) ....

i am a part time smoker really only weekends, gave them up before - its when the gunk breaks down after excerising you can cough it (lovely stuff). You see a smoker who doesnt cough up and shallow breathes is more at risk from cancer then one who does.

I know obviously id be better off not smoking im not thick, but id really love love to know an exact scale of damage. cant really trust anyone though, most people have an agenda - human nature really, which you can apply to anything not just my question

this is probably a controversial view but how would you feel if you knew that intensive aerobic exercise combined with smoking can be more harmful than smoking alone? Yeah exercise "MAY" offset some of the downsides of smoking like higher cholesterol and BP and RHR etc but your lungs are actually more vulnerable after exercise smoking wont be doing them any favours!!

THere is no scale. You smoke you simply massively increase the chance of catching lung cancer and dying a very horrible death.

I'm an awful man for the social smoking. It only really started in the last 6 months or so but I won't even think of a cigarette all week then once I have a few pints I'll tear into a box and bum left right 'n' centre.
I've cut it down to a few cigs at weekend but I'm gonna give them up completely, only adds to the hangover anyways.

How many a week are you looking at? Be honest.

Ok, fair enough. Honestly, I'll say that I don't know. Largely it will depend on how many a week you're smoking. If it's 2 or 3 fags at the weekend that's gonna have little or no impact on you (except of course that you're 100 times more likely to slide down the slippery slope into 20 a day).

    Seriously dude.
There is no Exact scale of damage.
    Thats nonsense.
    Its not an exact science.

Basically by smoking, you put a **** load of bad stuff in your body that can and more than likely will mess you up.

IF you are only having a few with pints or whatever, its obviously not as bad as smoking 20 a day, but its still bad for you.
I do it now and again too, but I know its bad for me, I make no excuses about it.

Its nothing to do with agendas.
Nobody really gives a flying **** if you want to poison yourself, bar maybe your close and personals.

Smoking is bad for you, no offense but if you wanted people to tell you that its ok to smoke if you work out, you came to the wrong place.

OP it's better than not exercising!!
I think this is what the OP is getting at. Maybe the post could have been worded better, I doubt (and hope!) the OP did not literally think it would undo the specific damage from smoking, but rather offset the negative health impact overall with the positive impact of exercise. i.e. if you had 2 twins, ate the same and had the same lifestyle, except one did 1-2hours exercise everyday BUT smoked 4-5 cigs at the weekend, while his brother sat on his ass -Who would have score better in a fitness test, or physical, or who would live longer? Hard to say or put a scale or figures on, but obviously there would be a crossover point.

Lots of people smoke & no doubt many also exercise. I would be disgusted if a smoker saw this thread and shrugged their shoulders and just give up the idea thinking “there you go, I’m an addict and not going to stop, but reading this it seems there is no sense exercising to try and offset it”. Too many give up like that, an “all or nothing” mentality. You will see loads of posts in the weightwatcher thread in the nutrition & diet forum, “I went to a wedding/party and had some cake so I gave up counting points after that and said feck it and ate loads, no sense in point counting the rest of the day, it was a write off”. Like just falling off the wagon and giving up, whereas I would see sense in hanging onto the wagon till the bitter end ;)
