Just interested to find out the weight of everybody's bike :)

An easy way to weigh it is put 2 chairs back to back and the bike in between then lift and rest the scales on the chairs and let the bike back down onto it (its easier than I make it sound :o )

    Well mine in 10.01kg
Its an Giant FCR1 XL size frame. I left the lights, puncture kit/tubes, pump on the bike.
I'm changing to drop bars soon, I got Richey Carbon Superlogic, just waiting on the shifters.

    WTF?
The easy way is to stand on the scales with the bike in your hand, stand on the scales without the bike in your hands, and subtract the little number from the big number!

Including pedals mine is 8.2kg. Not weenied in any way. PlanetX Pro SL, M
Dunno about the MTB or the commuter.

My road bike (S-Works SL2 with Zipp wheels + pedals + computer) is about 6.95kg. The SRM Professional crankset is pretty heavy.

The impressive one is my Full Suspension S-Works Epic - it is 9.3kg with proper off-road tires. (9kg when I weight weenie it more for hill climbs) http://ryansherlock.blogspot.com/2009/05/2009-specialized-s-works-epic-race.html The important thing is it is built up with durable components.

6.98kg without pedals... and with the stock saddle, before I put on the Brooks. That weight is also without bottle cages or mudguards :)

11.5kg LiteSpeed tourer, 36 spoke touring wheels, with Brooks, pedals, mudguards, lights, etc.... (though with regular front wheel, not the SON hub dynamo, taken off for end of summer tour).

Bike weighs in at 20kg when loaded with panniers.

Blorg, you should tell everyone it's proper weight -with cages, pedals and brooks, as that's how you ride it!

Mine's 7.58 (I think) -including pedals, cages etc

Dolan Hercules is 8.3 clean of cages, bag and computer. Ultegra SL triple.
Orbea Acqa is 9.1kg also clean. Ultegra Compact.
Spesh Tricross - not sure but prob north of 11KG.

Thinking of changing a few things on the Dolan - new wheels for a start. But that is a my present to myself after losing 5kg more.
I have 15kg to lose by xmas, and I will reward myself for every 5kg lost.

Nice work Ryan, your getting closer to the magic 6.8kg barrier!

Last I weighed the Trek it came in at 6.1kg.

The weight weenie thing is a bit lost on me given that I way more than 10times the bike weight, plus I carry 1.25L of drink on the bike, plus a saddlebag with two tubes etc.
I can definitely lose more weight than the bike.

    <snip>

And given that your locks' weight should be inversely proportional to the weight of your bike, it's all a moot point if you have to lock it up when out.

Exactly right, I'm 14 1/2 stone so I think it'd be easier for me to drop 4kg than the bike ;)

8.1kg with pedals, cages and saddle bag :)

59 Principia RSL with Chorus and handbuilt wheels....strog and light enough for my 100kg body :)

Using that logic I should total it all up with the rider on top of it.

Do you mind me asking which wheels, tyres, tubes and seatpost you have? Did the seatpost come with the frameset?

I'm currently planning my 56cm Addict SL build...

My Viner Prefecta weighs 7 KG's including pedals, 2 cages & computer. However, that was done on our bathroom weighing scales, as per Kenmc's 'instructions' (:)) So it's probably not very accurate, it doesn't really do half kilos too well...

...I tried to balance the bike on the kitchen scales but it fell off and knocked over the toaster!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭bbosco

I weighed mine on my Wii Fit and it immediately recognised that I was holding something and told me its weight. Clever eh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,702 ✭✭✭Home:Ballyhoura

Easiest way for me was to trick the digital bathroom scales by turning it on and before it gets a chance to set itself to zero, hop on yourself and let it settle. Then it will think that in its current state there is nothing on it and will show up at zero. Then, just simply pick up you bike and a reading for your bike will be shown on the display (which for me was only accurate to about 100g). Either that or you could just subtract your weight from the bike plus you weight as mentioned before.

Now, after a good old trip to ebay I proudly own one of these hook scales for weighing my bike (a lot cheaper than the other options which are this and this which are €67 and €77 respectively). My one came in at just €3.81 including delivery. It weighs objects between 20g and 40kg and simply hooks onto your saddle rails. I would highly recommend!

By the way, I nearly forgot my Orbea Orca weight 7200g including cages computer etc!

Cervelo R3 SL (size 51cm), Zipp wheels and Misc goodies, 5.92kg. Race with some different components than my lightest build though at a slightly higher weight (and usually on Kysriums) - I don't like the bike to be super light in a race, hard to keep the back wheel on the ground out of the saddle on a bumpy surface !

    Mine's about 11-12 kgs.

    Its a Fit BMX bike...

OMG, I thought my bike would weigh in about 9-12kg, but it's 14! Together, we weigh 110kg. No wonder I struggle on those Hors Categorie (i.e. > 2%) climbs. :o

To put this all in perspective I am around 7kg off my winter weight... and this is a normal cycle for me. That is an entire bike off my back. I am not crazy light either, there is scope (12 stone @6ft.)

7.45kg ready to hit the road!

12.56kg (seriously) since I changes to open pro rims.

Reading the other weights is another incentive to go get another, lighter bike.

Around 10kg. Don't have a digital scale so it's vague.

Have never weighed my commuter (Spesh Sirrus Sport), but somewhere between 12 and 14kg I'd imagine :( On the the bright side, I only weigh in 67kg at the minute and will be building a new weight weenied machine when I move to London in September :D - BTW, anyone who has any recommendations for a good LBS North/NE London, would be much appreciated...

That second decimal place is really saving you there - any rounding off and you're screwed. I need a better scales.

And what's the deal with weighing it without pedals? If you can't ride it, you can't weigh it IMO.

True, it smacks of desperation. I didn't spend (far too much) on pedals to have them excluded*.

But where do you stop? Include the weights of cleats and one empty water bottle? Or exclude the bidon because you can chuck it into a field at the bottom of the climb?

We need standards, dammit. Apart from anything else I think computers should be in.

    * oh, sorry, it's not a competition

10.4kg with all the gear on it, including pump. With me on it , a grand total of 72.2kg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

Pedals are part of the basic definition of "a bike" so they must be included. Cleats? No. That way madness lies (and shoes etc.).

I think that removing the bottle cages for weighing-in purposes in an attempt to "win" is perfectly allowable... but I also think doing so makes it clear that, no matter what the weight of your bike, you have lost in the wider context.

    Why should computers be in?

That's heavier than an 8" travel DH bike

IMO the bike should be weighed in "race trim". I wouldn't race without a computer. I would race without a pump. So the computer is in, the pump is out. For me.

The justification for including the cleats is that they're an intrinsic part of the pedal system, and switching to pedals whose bodies are a bit lighter but whose cleats are a lot heavier purely for the weightweenies money shot* is silly.

    * the photo showing the display on the scales.

    edit...

In any case, Chapter 3 of the 2008 Tour’s Race Regulation Guide — which spans 14 pages — clearly states in French (mine is poor, I might add) that the weight of the bicycle cannot be less than 6.8 kilograms. It further clarifies that this weight must be achieved without the addition of detachable parts. This means computers and water bottles, but also weights that are taped on and could be removed after the start of the stage

    Here.

OK, computers are out, but arguably the mounts are in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

16.5 kg, including lock, pump, lights and (obviously) pedals :)

Surprisingly, I'm only 79kg, which puts me at 8kg lighter than last time I weighed myself in March :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Quoted weights from manufacturers etc. are always without pedals, as that is how the bike is sold... From that point of view I think it is probably the best comparison. The UCI 6.8kg rule includes pedals but not cleats. Stock with pedals I think it would be 7.24kg (cheap Time RXS @260g.) Weight will certainly be up with the Brooks, water bottles and saddlebag I normally have attached to it.

Whats the weight of a high nelly? Spotted one outside craughwell, dublin road for sale. Tempted.

No cleats needed...just wellingtons and a black stick.

My wife's Pashley Princess is 21.1kg with rack and an empty basket. I'm hoping to get it down to the UCI limit with some Lightweights and Speedplays.

My ancient Eagle MTB (no suspension) rack, mudguards, lights is 14.7kg

I didn't include my pannier bag with repair kit, pump, rain gear, change of clothers and work bag. That must be another 1kg at times. It varies a lot.

I thought my bike would have been heavier. But then again, I've been looking for a new bike, and was surprised that so many hybrids don't seem any lighter than mine, many seem heavier. Even some low end road bikes seem the same. Seems like you have to pay over €1k to get a light bike.

Low-end (aluminium) road bikes can tend to be the wrong side of 10kg. If you are going for lightweight value, the Planet X is the one to go for, frame ;399 is seriously light for the price.

Light doesn't necessarily equate to high quality. To say you have to pay over to €1k to get a quality bike might be a more accurate statement.
