I've been feeling for the past while that maybe I'm getting too old for gaming...I know thats stupid but it got me wondering...what is the average age of gamers on boards.ie?

I'm 28....older gamers would make me feel better when I fire up my PS3!

    Don't worry - 28 is still quite young ;)
I've another few years on you and play quite a bit

I think the average at this point is 18 - 35 market. This is the desposable income market... the one that grew up with videogames. Older then that are people that didn't grow up with games, younger then that is the generation who will play them but can't afford them right now.

I can't quote research but I've read it, several times over :p

I concur! I have heard about the 18-35 market loads as being the biggest buyers of games but again no hard physical evidence.

EDIT: I'm 27 by the way (and have no plans on quitting anytime soon). My brother is 33 and he is still playing.

I'm 37 and most of my friend are the same age and play.

I know some guys in their 40's so there's no such thing as too old.

34 and not stopping. Been at games since early doors so now going to stop now since they are getting better. I didnt put in all those hours when I was younger playing games that were graphically challenged to stop playing now when they are more and more life like every year. Ah the days of kickoff 1/2/3 and microprose soccer compared to FIFA 09/10.... I get a little abuse but dont really mind especially when I get the better of the ones doing the abuse and they up and quit!

24, no plans to stop anytime soon. Still though, the girlfriend + parents are definitely in the camp that think computer games are children. Pisses me right off, moreso the girlfriend - she really hates them.

If I haven't grown out of it by now, I don't think I ever will. Yes as I get older I may find myself with less free time, but I'd always be much happier firing up the xbox for 30 minutes when I get home, instead of watching some shíte on tv like.

26 here. Don't play near as much as when I did when I was in teens, but still enjoy a dabble when I get the chance. There are one or two games a year that take a lot of my time up, but there are many games around that are very popular to othersthat I just wouldn't have the interest in anymore.

Video-games themselves aren't that old, roughly 30 years.

At the moment people over 30 might view them as "for kids" as they were too busy raising us to really get involved when video-games first came out.
Also people like the OP, myself included, who grew up playing games are going to keep on playing them as its a natural passtime to us. Why change?

Don't worry, in a few years games will be respected and viewed alongside cinema as a "normal" passtime.

I'm 35, and I play. Not as much as I used to, but that's mostly because these whippersnappers games aren't as good as they used to be. I need a codger emoticon.

29 and still playing. The girlfriend doesn't seem to mind either.
She even tries to join in sometimes, bless her.

28 too, used to only play strategy games, such as Civilization and comand and conquer when I was younger. (started really gaming at age 16 with the first comand and conquer, although I can recall playing Digger when I was 8 on a green and black screen.

I got the PS3 as a present from my mother in law :) I had mentioned that it is an awesome machine to my wife but I don't think I would have ever bought one myself. Now that I have one, I've started to enjoy games much more again, it's just relaxing. Often more entertaining than the average muck you see on TV.

As with us, games have grown up too. Adventure games are getting closer to adventure movies now. It is a whole new thing.

I remember reading somewhere that the average age of the PS3 player is about 30. Right on target.

Yeah me too, Ratchet and Clank, god she's bad at it. And she really freaks out when she's being shot at.
(calm down, it doesn't actually hurt, you can just restart your level)

She likes fighting games like Mortal Kombat, because that's just ramming the buttons. (she beats me all the time)

haha. +1 for the missus joining in.

She really made an effort to get involved in LBP with me. And to be fair it was a great craic. But then she wanted to play RE5 with me as well. That was going too far :-)

Also my missus was a demon on Soul Blade. Button bashing as well but she used to hammer all challengers. And lastly she is a totally amazing on Wii Sport tennis. I had to stop playing her cause it was embarrassing.

I'm 26 and no plan's to hang up my controller for a few years yet.

I usually just find one or two types of games and pretty much play them to death.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and COD 4 are the games of 2009.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 and Modern Warfare 2 are lined up for 2010.

Pro Evolution Soccer <insert year here> and Modern Warfare <insert release here> are lined up for <insert year here>.

My dad is an avid gamer and he will be 49 next year...he has more games than me and absolutely destroys anyone on Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Usually people start on easy or normal and work their way up, he started on hard and played expert on his 3rd attempt.

    So don't feel bad.

I'm only 22 but I'll be gaming on my death bed. I want my final memory to be me using Omnislash on Sephiroth to avenge Aeris for the millionth time

My Dad is 52 and has been gaming for years - we used to have a LAN set up in the house and me, my brother and him would play Quake III and Unreal Tournament. He sent me a text the other day asking me if he was getting too old for gaming, said he felt like he didn't have the stamina anymore. I told him you're never too old for gaming - it's not his age that was at fault it was the fact that he was playing so much Empire: Total War.

Our tastes might change as we get older, and we'll probably be more discerning, but I figure more people will be gaming as we get older as it's becoming more mainstream every year. Sure whilst we might not have as much time now, by the time we retire we'll have more than enough. I'm just lucky my OH is a big gamer too. :D Don't know how much arthritis might get in the way though.

30 and spend as much time gaming as work, girlfriend and boozing allows. My Dad, who's just retired is hooked on Tiger Woods on the Wii, while my Mam has finally caved in and is spending a lot on time playing point and click adventure games on the DS.

Im 30 years young my gaming tastes have changed a lot i used to hate FPS all ways thought they where too fast and unrealistic and the graphics couldnt handle it properly but COD4 changed that now i like them.

HAve grown out of Pro evo mainly because i lived in a house with a bunch of lads so it has been on every day for about 6 years.

Games have changed a lot they used to go on for ever and be reeally tricky to complete like the old mario games etc but now its more like a block buster movie they are easier and shorter but far more engrossing.

I remember the days of microprose soccer on the C64. Great 2 player game at the time. Had to line up just to one side of the post and run straight for the ball to hit you and get a goal. Even funnier was the indoor soccer on the other side of the tape. Dumb music alone had us laughing.

By the way I am 36 and still playing. No intention giving up my addicition and my escape from the real world. Be a Pro on FIFA09 and you too can be a top rated stricker for Liverpool. Now where did I leave my gun !

:D I used to do this, but the older I get (35btw) the less I care what the other folks think. In fact with the quality of games graphics and sound these days the usual reaction from non-gamers is stunned shock. I think a lot of people believe that games still look like wolfenstien3d or sensible soccer.

Maybe, but then again the price of SNES games was off the bloody scales.

I remember paying 65 Irish pounds in 1993 for SF2. Converted to euro with inflation and what people are earning now that's probably 200euro back then.

I also paid 60 punts for Alien 3 and remember i was sick for a week after paying as the game was so bad.

These days you can get preowned recent games for as little as a tenner, and with bargain alerts forums you can find amazing deals.

I just picked up a copy for Scene It for 360, with 4 wireless controllers and 8 batteries for 11.99.

    Unreal.
