Should I exercise on a sore calf?

Got a pain in my calf. Doesn't feel like a strain, more like a bad knot. You know when you get a really really bad spasmy cramp and afterward the muscle will hurt for a day or two. Thats exactly what it feels like, though I didnt actually experience a cramp. Its almost certainly due to jogging. It came on a day and a half after the last time I jogged so I dont quite get it.

Question is, do I go to the gym on it tonight? Will the stretching out it receives in the gym be good and make things all better, or tear the muscle in two and cripple me for a month?

I know you should rest a strain, but Im not sure this is a strain ...

Hmm, probably best if you don't do any stretching on your calf muscles. Let it rest and it should sort itself out.

I'd probably advise taking a day off the gym - it's better to miss a day than to miss a fortnight because of resultant injuries. However, if you go to the gym and maybe not work on legs (no leg strength training, treadmill, bike, etc) you might be ok.

But your leg would probably heal faster if you just sat on your couch and watched a DVD than if you tried to stretch it.

Rest ftw. Massage if you can get it (or self massage). Ice that sucker up too.

If it's just muscle soreness, then working out on it probably won't hurt you (after you get it warmed up). I would walk around on it a bit and get it nice and warm, then see how it feels. If the pain goes away then it's probably just a little muscle soreness, but if it gets worse or still hurts, I'd lay off for awhile until you heal.

If you decide to work out though, be sure to stop during your work out if it gives you any trouble. Also I wouldn't go too heavy if you're lifting weights (just in case)

If it came on suddenly and there was a 'pop' sensation then it could well be a calf strain that needs to be rested. Give it a couple of days rest and see how it feels then - hopefully it's just muscle ache after an exercise session. As per other posters - ice it regardless. It can only do good.
