I'm 18 and have been following powerlifting routines for about a year now and I'm using the gym in the rochestown park, but I want a gym that's more strenght/powerlifting/olympic lifting oriented. Anyone found a good gym in cork in either douglas or town?

Also does anyone here compete? Where are good meets being held etc?

Yo, Fitton Street gym is supposed to be fairly hardcore, and the Mardyke has everything you could want.

What kinda weight are you shifting?

Fitton street? Where exactly is that? I'll hopefully be going to UCC so I'll be using the mardyke gym anyway but I haven't seen it and whenever I ask people who go there they know jack **** about what equipment they have and just say ''it's huge''

As for lifts I'm at (latest prs):
    90kgx2 Bench
    140kgx7 Deadlift
105kgx5 squat (deep as possible because I used to miss depth when I was doing 130+)

    Mardyke is pretty sweet.

Up to 50kg dumbells.... heavier ones soon i hope.

    1000s of kgs in plates

    Lifting Platforms

    Smith Machines

    Power Rack

    Power Cage

    5 adjustable benches

    Incline Bench

    Decline Bench

    Flat Bench

    Shoulder Press Rack

    2 Cable Crossovers

    Some Hammer Strength Stuff

    etc
    etc

The Mardyke's meant to be the place to be alright.

There doesn't seem to be that much in Cork... One of the guys I train with's down there for 6 months and stuggled to find anywhere half decent.

Anyway, I'm a powerlifter. Compete mainly with the IDFPA but will step on the platform with any fed really.

Have you done any comps yet?

Have a look in Fitnessworx Gym, Donnybrook Commercial Park, Douglas - the gym is located on the second floor of the old red brick Mill building - opposite the Maxol Garage. They have loads of weight. Mardyke will suit you perfectly especially if you are living nearby - if you're in the Douglas area, fitnessworx is right beside you.

Fitton street has loads to offer in terms of weight but unfortunately the place is crumbling :(

Id have to disagree, anytime ive gone there i find it to be busy.
Of course it depends on what you define as busy? For me its having to wait 15 or 20 minutes for a bench but some people dont mind that.
Its very busy at nite i will agree there, i went once at 9.20 thinking it would be empty but how wrong i was, the worst ive ever seen it.

couldnt sleep one night and siad i would vist at 7.00 and it was amazing, only two other people in the entire gym until nearly 8!

I've never waited more than 5 minutes, generally just ask to work in with whoever is on it.

I have gotten to do this, but with what i said earlier when i first started goin to the maradyke i was new to the whole gym -way- of things, and faced with the large groups of hulk like polish men there at nite found it quite hard and demoralising to aked can i join in when i was lifting a mere 10 kgs and mr.muscle was benching 50,,,
a yr on tough everything is much better with regards having the confidence to join it,
but i still feel that new members of the gym (incoming first yrs) will not , unless sufficiently comfortable in a gym setting ask a person using a bench can they fall in.
