Pilates for Muscle Strength

I need to develop some core muscle strength and a little confused as to how to achieve this. I'll get the fact that I hate the gym out of the way early. Its not exercise that I'm trying to avoid I just do not like the gym scene.
Currently I walk 40-60 minutes 5-6 days per week and find that is great for my upper legs. However, I need to develop my core stomach muscles and would like to gain some upper body strength. Will using some weights I have at home help with this? Will pilates strengthen my muscles? Should I do both?
I should add that I am not looking to lose any weight here, I'm 5'8" and weight 139lbs and would begin to look gaunt if I weighed any less, so this is all about muscle strength not weight loss.
