I've heard its very dull, so I didn't bother checking it out.
I'm interested to see if anyone here can change my mind! :)

I'll watch anything Ron Livingston is in :).

I quite enjoyed it TBH, at least for the sci-fi side of it and I like the mystery element there seems to be (as in what is really going on and mission control keeping secrets from them) though the girl hearing the baby crying all the time is already annoying me...

I don't watch Grey's Anatomy to be able to compare it, but it does have a bit too much of a soap opera element to it, with all the relationship crap that I don't really care for...

It'll take a few more episodes to see which direction it gravitates towards but given it's been billed as Grey's Anatomy in space, it may struggle to keep my interest.

I also thought it shared a bit too much with Ron Moore's Virtuality pilot, hmmm...

wow things went to pot very quickly yer one is hearing baby crying yet she allowed stay on the ship esp as the doc knows what thats about.

    ron livinston pudgy stubble man

It was pretty to look at, but I don't think it will last.

    Im bored already.
Just watched the 3rd episode and still they havent revealed the plot.
    Wont be watching anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,015 ✭✭✭Ludo

Watched the first 2 eps. Not sure what to make of it yet to be honest. I would like to know what is going on but get the feeling I will be disappointed as the plot develops. Will watch 3rd ep tomorrow but may ditch it after that. Only watching it as there ain't much else on at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

It's a bit of a snoozer TBH - and I think the whole mystery of what is going on is going to be slooooow to go anywhere and most likely underwhelming.

The flashbacks/relationship crap is really grating on my nerves already. A bet to see if the guys can get a boner while having the "halo" thing on? What a loaf of bulls**t...

And I have to mute the volume every time blondie hears the baby crying....

A friend recommended I watch this show, so I'm gonna check out the pilot this afternoon. He usually has decent taste in tv shows/movies, but there's a lot of negativity towards the show here and it's being compared to Virtuality, so the likeliness of me liking it is quite slim, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

This show sucks - not interesting at all.

Didn't even bother with this one.. and I think CaptainNegative's comment convinced me to leave it that way. Love at 6.04pm, he says:
A friend recommended I watch this show, so I'm gonna check out the pilot this afternoon.

And less than 30 minutes later..
This show sucks - not interesting at all.

He didn't even make it through the full episode obviously! ;)

Didn't bother with the Virtuality pilot either.. which I heard was equally as dull.

To be fair, the pilot is like watching paint dry and we all know that a craptacular pilot doesn't necessarily mean the show sucks (*cough* True Blood *cough*)...

However, in this case, the show does suck :). I gave it the standard three episodes I give most new shows and it just doesn't get much better (though marginal improvements over the pilot) - it's still more of a soap opera than anything else... Save yourself the 2:15 required to watch those 3 episodes - I'm never getting those hours back :(...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

I usually don't bow out of anything after 30 minutes, but seriously nothing happened and there was no actors/writers in it that would convince me to stick it out.
The friend who recommended the show is actually enjoying it - I told him he's an idiot.

I'm going to wait till 6 episodes have aired then give it a watch. I think that people are dumping shows way too fast these days, look at True Blood most people gave up after 2 episodes only for it to turn into one of the best shows of the decade.

Usually I'd agree with you, but this show has to be a lost cause. "Grey's Anatomy in Space" - how can that turn out to be a good thing? Grey's Anatomy works as it is and shows in space work as they are, but put the two together and it screams RED ALERT!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

I've got to agree with CaptainNegative here, I usually give a show at least three episodes, maybe more - I even got through four or five with the craptacular "new" Knight Rider last year... But this is just bad. After three episodes, pretty much nothing at all has happened and way too much time is spent on who's sleeping with who or who did in the past or who wants to.. bleh.

I just can't see how this show won't bomb anyway: sci-fi geeks (like me :p) are completely put off by the soap opera crap. On the other hand, I imagine that people that actually enjoy the soap opera crap will hate the sci-fi element (what little of it there is) and thus, nobody will end up watching...

As much as I like Ron Livingston in movies/shows (and I just finished watching "Band of Brothers"!), even he seems bored in this...

    ratings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

    ratings?

    Gradually dropping by the episode;

    1x01 - 3.83 million
    1x02 - 3.56 million
    1x03 - 2.81 million
    1x04 - 2.59 million

Already talk of it being pulled, if the ratings drop further: http://weblogs.variety.com/bltv/2009/08/millionaire-loses-midas-touch-shark-tank-tanks.html

"Grey's Anatomy in Space" - how can that turn out to be a good thing?

:( I just heard about this show the other day, sounded like it might be a cool new sci-fi series, but Grey's Anatomy? I'll save myself the time, and delete.

Is anyone else still following this? It's been getting better with each episode - up to number 6 right now. The characters are getting more intriguing and the plot is slowly expanding. It still looks absolutely fantastic.

Well recommend people to give it a look and for them to stick with it.

It would be a shame if it does get pulled as it's starting to go places.

Could you possibly compare to some other shows in regards to how good it is? I mean would it be on a par with the likes of Dollhouse/Chuck/24 or more along the lines of Fair City/The Hills/One Tree Hill?

I've stuck with it so far, but it's gonna be dumped I've no doubt.

I got the OH to watch an episode (she loves Grey's) but she got bored, even with the "who's sleeping with who" shoite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,217 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

Oh it's terrible sh1te. All the (admittedly, hot) girls are self-obsessed, neurotic pains in the arses and all the men are suffering from post-traumatic stress of some sort or other. PERFECT crew to send into space for 6 years, huh? The Sci-fi element has just been wedged in there to get the geek/bloke demographic in but it all looks like it's being done by someone who has been told about sci-fi rather than being a fan (Kind of like Charlie's angels movies "OK so action movies have fighting, helicopters and um.... motorbikes. there ya go"). I mean, I know with fantasy and sci-fi you shouldn't really pick holes in the plot (A wizard did it) but they go to all the expense of making a respectable looking ship and then somehow have instantaneous communication with Earth no matter how far they are out?

    She-Fi......

I'm kind of surprised by the negativity. I'm loving this show. Lost meets Solaris sort of. Want to kill the religious fanatic bird though. Want to do other things to the blonde. Maybe it could use some pew pew.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

In the TV barren wastes of summer, its worth giving all new shows a shot. I watched all eight episodes in one go yesterday.

It has similarities to a number of shows. Maximilian is right about Lost attributes. There are flashbacks in every episode.....and there is a mystyerious force in a Hatch. Sound familiar? :p
They whole crew just opened the hatch at the end of the eight episode, so the ninth will probably be the most interesting.

There are some parts to like about it. The space ship is cool...very well designed and realistic looking. They dealt with gravity in the best way I think a low budget show can. They dealt with sexual urges that the crew would get with a hormone type patch, which was clever.

But thats where to good stuff seems to end.

Its very soapy....and a little cliche at times. They hit alot of the old soap classics.
Pregnant woman struggling with her choices? check.
War veteran suffering from PTSD? check.
Distraught Commander who "left people behind!" check.
    Hallucinations? check.
Several long distance relationships being tested? check.

why are we supposed to care about the blonde ones baby? It's not related to space or the mission. Why would any space program allow couples into space? It's beyond stupid.

And while "techie jargin" is not a good thing, a little bit wouldn't hurt. They are on a space ship and none of them have a clue how anything works. All they ever say is if something is "Nominal" or not. I swear, there is one scene where they say it about 12 times in two minutes. :p

There's good and bad here. But as I said, with not much else until October rolls around, what else is there? I watched all of The Wire and True blood recently. Run out of shows that I missed the first time round.

It's dead folks, hardly a shock TBH:

    http://www.tvsquad.com/2009/09/14/defying-gravity-we-hardly-knew-ye/
ABC has just announced that last night's episode of Gravity would be its last.

Although ABC hasn't given any official word about its cancellation, it wasn't as though it came as much of a surprise, given the show's troubles from the very beginning.

I stopped watching after the 3rd episode but did have the rest queued up for another lull in the TV schedule... don't think there's any point now though...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 34,567 ✭✭✭✭Biggins

Pity. By episode 7 things was starting to move.
Some of the crew was starting to catch on things were not as they appeared and lies was being told.
About to watch 8. O' well, there goes another without a decent ending.

I hope by some miracle some sci-fi channel might pick it up and give us at least an ending.

Ara nuts. I was really starting to get into it. Really liked the conclusion of the latest episode, the whale call and the tomatoes growing in fractal patterns. Though I was thinking today that it would be best suited to one series.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 34,567 ✭✭✭✭Biggins

Can't believe they cut the series JUST when the tempo REALLY kicked in with the climax of part 8 - but thats American Networks for you.
    Sucking big time!

Apparently in fact the WHOLE of the first series is made already anyway...
Has the faith of Defying Gravity been decided? Or decision is still to be taken.

Well, the new outer space drama by ABC is again looking to make some room in the hearts of the viewers, like many other shows before, which lost in space. The question is, Is Defying gravity is going to complete his mission or it is going to be cancelled by ABC quietly?

Defying Gravity is based on the adventures of eight worldwide astronauts, and on a top-secret mission a spaceship has been flown by them named Antares. The show recorded and telecasted their lives on earth as a part of documentary. There is abundance of romantic moments even having dressed up in libido-suppressing devices.

The show unfortunately has not able to attract the reasonable level of viewer ship for ABC Television Network. Defying Gravity first appearance consist of two episodes and the predominated replication smashed by rivalry of prevailing repeats. The show just attracted 3.83 million viewers in first hour and only a 1.1/3 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. The second hour dropped to 3.56 million with the same number of demo.

There storyline is oddly alike the failed pilot for the Sow Virtuality that aired a month ago. Defying Gravity is co-produced by CTV, Omni Film Productions Limited, and Fox Television Studios. Defying Gravity is a Canadian series. Filming has been finished on all 13 episodes of season one and viewers from Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States can watch this show.

Argh. That's really disappointing news. It's not looking good for a 2nd series.
The show isn't just ABC though. CTV in Canada are continuing on with it I believe. Their schedules still have the show listed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

If all 13 episodes are already filmed though, that means there probably is no satisfying conclusion to it all so even getting the 5 remaining episodes on CTV won't really help. Most shows that are a US/Canadian network collaboration don't seem to survive cancellation by the US network at least...

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

came across this on a TV site.
According to Nicole Marostica, a publicist for the show on ABC, the show has not been canceled, contrary to recent speculation. The show had always been scheduled to appear for eight weeks, with Brothers & Sisters returning to television on September 22nd. The network continues to review its scheduling options for the show. However, the show's future prospects are not exactly bright as it continues to shed viewers, and come in last in the ratings of the four major networks.

I thought last night's episode was really interesting.
Irritating Religious Bird went straight to the the Bible. There are 7 of these objects. I wonder if they are supposed to be what are referred to in the bible as the Seven Spirits of God. These are:

1 — the Spirit of the Lord; (intergalactic hippie?)
2 — the Spirit of wisdom; (****ing Yoda)
3 — the Spirit of understanding; (Beta/whale impersonator)
4 — the Spirit of counsel; (Alpha - killed the two in the original mars mission?)
5 — the Spirit of might; (pew pew & arm wrestling)
6 — the Spirit of knowledge; (Yoda in wheelchair with voicebox?)
7 — and the Spirit of the fear of the LORD. (Freddy Kruger)

There are objects on Mercury and Venus, Earth being the third (even though they call it Beta), which would suggest its the Spirit of Understanding. Beta does seem to understand the astronauts deeply.

So is in fact this whole series some spin on the Book of Revelations, the Apocolypse or whatever? Will there be lots of pew pew when they hit No.5 and running away/venturing into basement at No. 7?

There really is tons of potential

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭murfie

Max, I didnt read the spoilers. When did the latest episode air?

Is it the one after they were just about to open pod 4? I didnt think it aired last night anyway. Was it moved to Friday or Saturday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

Since ABC killed it, the episodes are now sourced from CTV in Canada instead - I think CTV airs it on Saturdays. The episode that just aired was episode 9 "Eve Ate the Apple". TV.com synopsis:
Finally, the crew learns about the hidden element in Pod 4 and the true nature of their mission when the Antares draws nearer to Venus.

Na, thats spin. The networks do that with every show. It's unlikely it will be back on ABC. But as you said, CTV are showing them so atleast we get to see the rest of the season.

Lots of information in this episode. Enjoyed it. The black one who plays Eve is truly a horrendous actor. Her delivery was so unnatural and high school play. Poor casting there tbh.

And I have to wonder, should they have started with this? All the fluff in the run up to this episode has hurt the ratings and Im sure they would have hooked a larger audience if they had laid some of this out in the beginning instead of wasting time on silly little sub plots. It's gotten very interesting now and we won't see a second season. Shame.

The same almost happened with Dollhouse. Really poor first episode but towards the end got brilliant.

Gotta agree with Kirby - ABC may air the missing episodes but it will be whenever they have a gap to dump them on, with no interest in getting viewers really (like they did with Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, etc). And with no support from the American network, there is no chance of a second season anyway. My main problem though is that with all first season episodes already filmed, it'll probably have an unsatisfying ending...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

CTV is going to air all 12 episodes of season 1. ABC stopped at episode 8 but is claiming they will eventually air the last 4 (probably at some random time slot) - it's essentially canceled by ABC at least even though they haven't "officially" admitted it yet. I'd say the chances of a season 2 without the US network's involvement are slim to none.

Damn. But at the same time these were one of those shows that should only have one season. It could have gotten boring quickly.

One season shows only work if its a contained story....the writers know going in that it's going to be one season. This isn't really like that. I would bet my house on there being a cliffhanger at the end of the filmed season....and we will never know what happens in the end.

Exactly. Like most American shows, this was mapped out to be a multi-season show. ABC more or less canceled it after all 12 episodes of season 1 had been filmed - this means that the show runners have no time to even go and produce some kind of definite ending in the last episode. So yeah, more than likely it'll be an unsatisfying ending that really goes nowhere.
