Nearly coughed up my cornflakes this morning when I read this on wiki

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_country_is_the_largest_exporter_of_bananas_in_america
Believe it or not Ireland is the bigest exporter of bananas in the world. Although bananas do not grow in Ireland, Fyffes (an Irish owned company) imports bananas from Columbia, Honduras, Belize and Costa Rica and then exports them throughout Europe making Ireland, as a country, the biggest exporter of bananas in the world!

Cue Banana Republic jokes that we can now no longer deny....

After all that has happened in the last 12 months could we possibly look any more thick as a Nation?

They're not classified as "bananas" until they're ripe, they're exported from South America very much un-ripe (but still clearly sodding bananas!)

Corruption in politics leads certain third world countries (that mostly grow bananas) to be described in a derogatory sense as a "Banana Republic". Given our level of corruption and the increasing perception around the world that Ireland gives Zimbabwe a run for it's money in the corruption league - the fact we actually take in and export bananas aswell has a certain comic and embarrasing undertone.

Cos we're too stupid to make our own sun to help grow bananas.

At least I think that's what he's getting at. I'm a bit thick afterall.....

I had to study the banana industry for Leaving Cert Geography and I actually remember reading about Fyffes being the biggest exporter.

You're comparing Ireland to Zimbabwe and you're embarassed because an Irish owned company exports bananas?

What a load of rubbish, seriously!
