They're cutting down the huge horse chestnut tree at the Nassau Street entrance. From the Communications Office:
It is with regret that Trinity College Dublin has been obliged to fell the Horse Chestnut tree at the entrance to the Arts Building on Nassau Street. The tree has undergone extensive examinations conducted by two different experts and a serious fungal disease was identified which now necessitates the removal of the tree for safety reasons. The College regrets this decision however it has been obliged to take this course of action due to the potential danger it may pose to the public.
I'm actually pretty sad about this. It was a great tree. I mean, I know it's not like an actual person dying or anything, but it really did look amazing.

On a slight aside, it's going to take them almost a week to fell it? Yowza.

    RIP tree.

They should put an exact replica of the tree there in aluminium and let a creeper grow up it.

Or a hologram of the tree...a la futuristic Simpsons.

Damn where am I gonna get my conkers now?
Another [horse-chestnut] stands in the Nassau Street entrance surrounded by a concrete bridge. It contributes greatly to the architecture of the entrance and the view from Dawson Street.

from "Trees of Trinity College Dublin" 2nd Ed.

Hear hear! But, more importantly, there's another horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) right behind the Berkeley library (according to the same publication anyway) where conkers can be found.

I'm not sure what suprises me more: that there's an entire book about the trees of Trinity college, or that it's in its second edition.

Actually AFAIK there are some unusual species of tree, thanks to the Botany department. I'd be interested in that book!

There are trees in trinity that exist no where else in ireland/europe. Somebody/some group must have dedicated a substantial part of there life to preserving them.

There was a tree there? Is that the annoying round thing that always gets in the way?

    This news upsets me greatly.

For those interested, there us a Tree Walk during Green Week (I think) on which you can learn all about Trinity's trees.

It's probably one of my favourite books. Here is the first edition online. Second edition was published in 1997 by Trinity College Dublin Press.

Indeed. On page 23 the silver lime beside the flatiron is described:
It flowers nearly a month later than the common lime...and the nectar is said to be narcotic to bees, which may be found in a drunken stupor below it on hot summer evenings.

    O...K!

Even if they put another tree in it's place, it'll probably take a good few years to mature and look as good as the old one. Not saying that the old one was stunning or anything, but it added to the entrance even if it was annoying walking around it at lunchtime when there were people everywhere!

    Yes actually. :(

I imagine if I hadn't seen this post and had walked in/out that entrance I would be extremely taken aback. I never notice how right these things are til they're gone. People say it's just a tree now, but just wait...
    *plod plod plod pause* "Woah...."

Are we allowed to make it out of wood??

Friend of mine made a pretty good point tho.. What other college in the world emails the entire staff and student body to tell them a tree is going to be cut down...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

You say that like it's a bad thing.

College is a community. People are interested in these things. Would you rather be kept in the dark about changes occurring across campus?

I'm not sure why, but I think it's really cool that Trinity is the kind of college that does.

I think it's better than finding out about things when they are a fait accompli.

But anyway, I suppose they have to tell people because the removal would have safety issues involved?

Yes. I believe they are described as "pungent".

It was planted in 1870. So generations of students and others have passed it by, sat by it (eh, flicked ash at it?). I'm not particularly into nature, but I do think this is sad.
