Thats a pretty impossible question to answer. There are 2 basic types in Ireland; coastal and olympic type. Olympic style the one youve probable seen on TV/ Oxford Cambridge race etc.

I can prob help more if you have more specific questions

Hey Ryder, Well basically I was thinking of taking up a new sport in college thsi year and rowing seems really interesting! So I would be talking about the olympic style rowing! It seems like a good teamwork sport that also gives you a total workout and something I can start without experience needed.

Did a bit of rowing a few years back, both Olympic (style not level :D) and Coastal, it's a fantastic sport but the training is very very tough!! Having said that it's very rewarding and will probably keep you fitter than just about any other sport out there

t the training is very very tough!!

How do you mean very very tough, as in physically? Or the fact that a lot of training is done early in the morning?? Thanks

Physically it can be hard. It's great racing and worth the effort. I did it for years with Neptune.

I just mean physically, don't mean it in a bad way...it's tough training but worth it, as for the early mornings it can actually be quite nice to be on the water early in the morning. I'd say definitely try it, sure you've nothing to lose!!

Well I started myself in college 15yrs ago and am still rowing today. Its kind of unique in that way as a lot of successful athletes didnt start until going to college.

Yeah training is tough but if you like it you'll stick with it so dont let it scare you. Think its a fantastic sport and really changed my whole attitude to sports. If youre interested def give it a go

a lot of clubs will probably be finishing training at this time as the all irelands are on this weekend coming. some clubs do train troughout the winter do. not like soccer or rugby where you train to last for between 70-90 mins, the races for the beginers only last for 5 or 6 mins and you are giving it everyhting for that lenght of time. very enjoyable sport do, and very satisfying when you get your first win. a lot of effort goes into the training and you really need to be a person who doesn't give up when the going gets tough, you need determinition to suceed.
