    Up the Villa.

    very impressed with clarke tonight

    and guzan

and nrc again, despite some sloppy passing. i think someone nailed it on villatalk... nrc will be 10 times the player when he just has to win the ball and pass it 3 yards to your new creative midfielder. at the minute theres nobody in there capable of playing the balls we need played, so everyone gives it a shot (including nrc unfortunately)

its amazing what happens when you play a guy in his proper position isnt it

with heskey out for the final id assume itll be a 4-5-1, unless we give weimann a start

    GK: Brad Snr, Brad Jnr.

I'd be in favour of keeping Friedel as #1 for start of the season. That will keep Guzan working hard. Play Guzan in the cup matches and reserves to help him get experience though. Have one of the kids (Parish is the most promising isn't he?) as third choice if needed.

RB: Luke Young, Eric Lichaj. Definitely need a reinforcement here. Pity the Litex guy didn't work out.

CB: Davies, Cuellar. Clark did well tonight but with Davies so injury-prone I think we need two more CBs. Distin + someone else would be great. We'll probably just get Distin though.

LB: Bouma, Shorey. Could do with an Eric Lichaj here tbh.

RM: Milner, Albrighton. Expect Albrighton to push Jimmy on this year. I'm very excited by Albrighton's performances.

LM: Young, Downing. As good as anyone's left wingers tbh. Bannan as backup.

CM: Petrov, Reo-Coker, Sidwell, Gardner. Our weakest position outside CB. Could really do with a Paul Merson. Tuncay FTW.

ST: Carew, Heskey, Gabby, Fonz. (Assuming that Homer has moved on.) As good as that is, I think we could really do with more competition for Gabby. The Fonz can bang them in for England U-19s but will struggle against Prem opposition. Gabby's lazy. Carew + Bent with Gabby coming on with 20 minutes to go could be phenomenal.

So I count 21 players who could reasonably play a role. We definitely need a RB and a CB, bringing it to 23. MON has said he wants five players, that would mean maybe a RB, CB, CB, MC, ST, making a squad of 26, or 24 if you exclude Lichaj and Bannan.

    Not so bad.

I think Shorey is just plain bad, replace him and sell him IMO.
I think we need to sign 2 centre backs, possibly one of them could be RB cover as well and not in a Cuellar type of way. In a, I know how to play here, kind of way.
I don't know who that would be though.

Wings we are fine I think. No need for Bentley.

CM is definitely weak. It's fine saying a midfield of NRC, Sidwell and Milner or whatever but we need to get someone better than them.

A top notch striker wouldn't hurt either. I mean we could improve every position obviously and if we have an opportunity to bring in a top notch player in a position we possibly think we don't need we should take it.

We'd be mental not to go 4-5-1.

Juve beating Real. Any luck we won't have Ronaldo taking on the mighty Lichaj.

a striker depends on whether we're playing 442 or 451

if its 451 id say get rid of harewood and let the fonz feature more

We'll never be exclusively 4-5-1 but if it is our main formation we need our new midfielder to be really top class and creative. Which is not Jenas!

Talk of Warnock for Shorey + cash. Shorey and Bouma is a good competition tbh. Nowhere near as important as the rest of the defence.

    Yeah Distin/Upson/Wheater/Hangelaand + a CB/RB combo would be perfect.
I don't know who that would be though.
We could buy the second best economist right-back in the world.
Wings we are fine I think. No need for Bentley.

    What about captain supremo?

Only if there was good value going I think.

    UTV

So assuming Petrov/Young/Bouma are out for August 15th i suppose Lichaj, Albrighton & Shorey are ready to start along side NRC & Sidwell against Wigan?.

Props to Guzan, has to start against Juve as it stands.

    Can definitely beat Juve

You can't say one area is more important than the other IMO. One weak link can cost you.

whats the latest from the juve v real game i left murrays as it was 1 nil to juve
come on villa well played today. great game. guzan should have done better for the peno that never was as it happend out side the box and was a clear dive imo. At last reo is playing in his proper postion and is doing well linking up with sidwell some goal by him today. if that was ronaldo that scored that we wouldnt have heard the end of it in the press

If Guzan had got in front of the penalty it would have went through him, cartoon style. you serious? You think he could have saved that?

Juve won 2-1 in the end.

I think he was! But perhaps he's talking more. Must have had a boost of confidence by playing with the USA and perhaps Martin has told him he will have a bigger role.

trust me, i was in the north lower and you couldnt hear the bugger at all. doesnt matter how loud a stadium is, you can still hear players 20 yards away shouting

    some positive news about Davies/Petrov
Curtis Davies today joined Stiliyan Petrov in handing Villa a welcome double injury boost – and the Villa defender could even face Juventus tomorrow.

Davies’ shoulder problem resurfaced in last night’s Peace Cup semi-final win over Porto when it popped out twice in a matter of minutes, prompting the defender to be substituted as a precaution.

Meanwhile, scans have confirmed Petrov avoided serious damage to his shoulder after falling awkwardly against Atlante on Wednesday and the Bulgarian even has an outside chance of being fit for the start of the Premier League season a fortnight today.

And Davies has not given up hope of facing Juve after they denied Villa a dream date with Real Madrid in Seville at 10pm Spanish time tomorrow by beating Los Galacticos 2-1.

“Hopefully it will settle down and I’ll be all right to play in the final, but that’s obviously down to the manager whether he thinks it’s worth risking it or not,” said Davies.

“It was the same as before. It popped out, popped back in, I went to put the strap on and as I went to put my shirt on it popped out.

“It’s a little bit weak, I didn’t really feel the pain or anything, it was just a little bit unfortunate that it did pop out.

“I’m quite relaxed about it because I know what it is. I just roll it back in, as gruesome as that sounds.”

I know it's likely a load of bull howler, but it had me tingling:
Aston Villa ready to move for Real Madrid's Wesley Sneijder

Aug 1 2009 By Bill Howell

VILLA are set for talks with Real Madrid over a sensational move for star midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
    Wesley Sneijder

The 25-year-old Holland international and former Ajax ace is available after Madrid’s summer spree.

Reports in Spain suggested a fee of 16 million euros had been agreed with Liverpool for the attacking midfielder, but Villa have now come in to make their play.

It is believed his wages could still represent a huge hurdle for Villa to overcome but the fact Villa have gone for such a replacement for Gareth Barry is a signal at last of their intent to compete this season.

It promises to be a busy week for Martin O’Neill who is closing in on the five players he has deemed necessary to beef up his squad in preparation for the new season.

Villa will also decide over the next few days whether to pay Sporting Lisbon £12 million for play-maker Miguel Veloso.

The Portuguese club have told Villa to stop dithering and make a decision on the 23-year-old Portuguese international after giving them the asking price.

If Villa stall much further it is believed Lisbon will look for another buyer.

O’Neill must also stump up £4.5 million for Portsmouth’s Sylvain Distin, who wants to join but the fee is proving a major hurdle for a player of his age.

It is believed Villa are close to sealing a deal for Blackburn’s versatile left-back Stephen Warnock.

The only stumbling block with regards to the 27-year-old former Coventry and Liverpool player is Sam Allardyce’s insistence on finding a replacement first.

And finally after a summer of speculation, O’Neill is also now finally pondering offering veteran former Tottenham and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell a one year deal after his contract ended at Portsmouth.

Campbell turns 35 in September and may decide to continue his Premier League career rather than move abroad.
