Creating new threads about the same subject and preventing people from posting in old threads has to be the most retarded rule ever created on boards.ie

So much for pooling resources in one area!

Was the Q7 actually working as a taxi or could it have been O'Leary's car using the taxi plate to get into the bus lane?

A guy in Navan drives a Range Rover. Beast of a machine, he was bringing people out to the Slane gig there a while ago, and was charging per person. Think he owns a taxi company in the town.

    Doesnt he use a merc?

It was in the lane for the port tunnel, if he can afford a Q7 Im sure he could afford the €12 for the toll :D

It was a silver Q7 and there was someone in the back alright. I had to do a double take to make sure I wasnt seeing something that wasnt there!

There's a black '08 S class doing the rounds in Galway, too. There was a Range Rover around here a few years ago, and a Lancruiser Amazon (I think) recently enough.

I jumped into a '00 model BMW 5 series taxi late one night in St. Stephens Green, half cut. Jumped in and realised there were lovely sports leather seats, and then a lovely burble from the engine when he started it up. Looked over at the dials and realised they had M-logo's on them. Got speaking to the driver, who was about 60-65. Turned out that he was a retired stockbroker and had taken up driving a taxi to stop himself getting bored. He decided that if he was gonna be in a car for 6 hours a day, he might as well buy a car that he enjoyed driving.

    M5 - Best Taxi EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

Saw a Black Hummer H2 Taxi in Vienna. Was so shocked I couldn't even get the camera out in time! How in gods name could you make a profit driving one of those!

    Found it online though

Got a very nice 02 or so S class taxi one very busy night; was a similar story - property developer who realised the crash was coming and got out (about 18 months too soon but still likely ended up with a LOT of cash compared to being NAMA'ed now!) and was taxiing to waste away the nights, wanted a car he'd enjoy being in.

Was selective about who he picked up in it, said he'd never take women on their own / in solely female groups due to the high risk of them getting sick on his leather!

My uncle has an S class which he taxiied in for a very, very short period of time before putting a limo licence on it instead but I'm talking weeks only - might have just been before the introduction of the limo licences.

I asked a taxi driver about this phenonomen once.
According to him a lot of these premuim cars with taxi plates are owned by Hotels for the exclusive use of their guests. Or by a taxi driver who has an arrangement with Hotels, or anyone who needs to impress clients/guests.

Volvoman, I'll never ever understand why Taxi Drivers love old cars that would literally fold like an accordian in an accident no matter how clean they are. Is it because they don't value themselves, or they don't value their passengers?

Back on topic, 7 Series seems to be a popular enough choice. I'm sure there are agreements with more of the presitgous hotels. I sold an X3 once to a guy who was working from a Dublin hotel who would only allow the higher end cars outside their foyer. Not 100% sure how they thought an X3 was premium enough though :D

Ya, think it was a 00 or a 01 E39 M5. Silver one. Walked up to it from the front so didn't take much notice. Just thought it was a 530D sport.
Would have spoted the 4 pipes from the back
    Some bus.

Especially when every time the car hits a bump in the road the engine dies :D Seriously, I don't understand it either. The sooner they bring in a maximum age for taxis the better imo (I'm thinking no more than 5 years old). It'll give the whole industry a better image too.

the guy was a member of www.dtdirl.com, he has sold it now and is taxiing in an Audi A4. nearly sure it has some sort of kit on it but not sure if its the ausdi sport kit or the RS4 kit......but he doesnt have the RS4 TDi badge on it thank god :D looked well, the last time i saw it.

most of the time, you cant hail these guys in either! they work like a sort of chauffer (SP), as in they only take certain bookings and can have as little as one customer per day, but would be with the one customer all day and would pick them up, drop them off and wait for them etc etc

know 2 guys doing this, one in a C300 and another in an S350 CDi merc.

Most of the expensive or new cars used as taxis are bought with redundancy money or remortgage money or accident claims.

What about the people waiting at a Rank to be greeted by a 90's corolla, has happan to me and I told the Taxi driver to F off as his car was a Piece of sh*t. Then of course follows the abuse towards me which i didnt deserve.

The disgrace lies with the Taxi regulator, how those sh*boxes are still on the road is beyond me.. I thought all Taxis now had to be of a certain age.

Behind a Jag X Type taxi on the M1 today, did appear to be a proper taxi rather than a buslane surfer like O'Leary. Although it isn't *that* luxury its still not a normal taxi!
