Irish culture

I am in bed sick, hopefully it isn't the piggy flu and have alot of time on my hands so I have been doing what any rational person would do,watch a crap load of tv.

Inbetween the usual car crash that is Jeremy Kyle and Dr.Phil I have been checking in on my old favourite the Den. I am not proud nor am I ashamed.

They now have these cut aways during breaks of the youth of today.
The majority of the kids seem to be from Dublin with a few from the rest of our fair land scattered amongst them.

There are a few kids who speak of their favourie book, their hobbies or games they like.

However the vast majority of them seem to be obsessed with singing, dancing and High School Musical is mentioned more than once.
Alot of them no matter which region their accent seems to stem from have an American twinge to it.

Maybe I am not so self aware of what I was like when I was kid but they seem so Americanised and maybe I was just as bad to the older generation.

Are we losing our culture or is this just the natural progression and by product of an increasingly Globalised world?
That eventually all cultures will to some extent homogenise.

Or is Irish culture simply so diluted at this stage that it is actually long gone and all we are left with that is Irish are the stereotypes?

Oh noes! Swine Flu makes every accent sound like it's a bit American. Looks like you've got it.

It's been like that for some time, and it's not just Ireland. The thing is, Ireland is a predominantly English speaking country, so we'll pick it up quicker. In German, for example, most American shows are dubbed into German, so the accent isn't picked up.

I also find that, in come countries, parents make they affort to balance it with local culture. In ireland, take for example communion day, we exploit it. Seve nad eight year olds goign to salons, for example.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I was stuck upstairs away from the sky box and the computing devices with only a portable TV to distract me from my messed up back. Irish TV is appallingly bad in the daytime. The chatshows annoy me, but what got to me the most was a thing on RTE called TTV, it's kids tv but it's, what I would call logo screen, is just this giant pink jewel encrusted mobile phone ringing on the screen. It pisses me off because I believe it is actually an accurate representation of the generation being raised today; maybe not being able to find a job will knock the little brats back to earth. :D

It's fecked up alright, we're kind of like one of those Eastern European countries to go from a totalitarian socialist (well more like a fascist) state to embracing free market capitalism in all of it's guises, it disgusts me! The worse thing is our so called 'home grown' programs are worse, they're full of this running political agenda about cultural heterogeneity and promoting the more 'modern', 'contemporary' Ireland (i.e. the mobile phone thing from ttv as forementioned above). It's sickening, our media, in this case childrens television, picks and chooses the wrong aspects, the material aspects of modern Ireland, mixes them in a hodge podge of pseudo-american 'culture' and we get daytime rubbish that's rotting the minds of our youth. Bring back Bosco!

Irish culture? Surely you mean the combination of British trash and American tack that we mix with a little Oirish to create our own brand of rubbish.

The land of Saints and Scholars has turned into the land of ****e & Scumbags

I've noticed several things about those kids:

There's a large percentage of them who are fat

    They are not funny/talented

They seem to be either from one of the stage schools or one of the 'special' schools.

Watching back old clips of the den you realise it was hilarious and intelligent, as a grown up i can enjoy it on a levl too but the muck they have now is just awful!!

I blame the EU and the Lisbon treaty for this. If Lisbon II or any other version of it gets passed I will be blaming it for any cultural erosion that takes place after it

Now THAT looks cool :pac: They even managed to build decent roads! Typical.

The problem is when RTE do show anything "Irish" there'll be 10 threads on here within minutes complaining that the License fee is being wasted in rubbish. Lose, lose. If you want some culture you won't find it on TV anyway. Read a book. Plenty of Irish authors could do with the support.

There is only one accent that works well on TV and that is the American one. All these kids and their parents are aware of the fact that if you are not a celebrity, you are nobody. They and the show producers are absolutely right to drill this into kids. I hate people who are not celebrities/good-looking/rich, but does that make me a bad person?

The Sunday Independent are the only true chroniclers of Irish culture today.

Are they still showing talentless Michael Jackson kid? He is dressed as Jackson and just sit there singing a Jackson song in monotone. It looks like they may have his mother held hostage behind the camera and some Den producer is saying "keep singing kid or yore ma gets it"

We have plenty of culture, look at our tv shows - Celebrity Jigs & Reels, You're A Star, The Apprentice, Dragons Den!

I havn't seen that one but there is one I find very funny of a ten year old who talks about getting his life on track.

He must have really went off the rails around 7-8 got heavily into drugs and such but now he is back on track and in his words ' going to show all the people who doubted him'

It's Cartoon Network and Disney Channel that has the young 'uns talking like little American pr!cks, I love regional accents, I will be sad to see the day when we all talk the same. We wouldn't know some people were from Cork, without their accent 'bai', and we might end up thinking that they're nice to talk to and you won't be able to get away from the conversation before it's too late!

I don't fully buy into the idea of an authentic 'Irish' culture, I mean what is it? Red hair and freckles, Aran sweaters, Guinness? But its definitely true that as a country we have become increasingly globalised and, if you want to use the term, Americanised. Tbh i don't really have a problem with our culture mingling with other cultures. There is a lot to be gained from other cultures. What I do have a problem with is the influence of a sort of super sweet sixteen-high school musical-Jamster hybrid which seems to be infecting our youth.

No one is selling an "Irish culture", we already have one. It just so happens that ours isnt very "exotic". Compare us with other countrues and there is feck all difference. Itallians love pizza and coffee, french love wine and cheese and are lightly tanned, we like bacon and cabbage, guinness, have fair skin and freckles. We all ave our particular look, food and drink. We have our own genuine culture. Are ya slightly embarrassed by that?

But your right about the super sweet sixteen crap ruining young kids minds, my neighbour who is 8 told me everything there is to know about MTVs the hills and how holly broke up with brody and now has her own show or something to that effect. I wondered did her mam know she is watching this ****e. Its slightly disturbing
