Hey there, following another thread by an author, I got to wondering if any of the ladies of the lounge would be interested in a book swap. Maybe this thread would be suited to a more general forum, so please move it to a more appropiate place if you wish.

I was thinking that we could list a few books we would be willing to send on (with a brief review maybe), look at others lists then see if the owner would swap one for one (or ten for ten). Oh and just for fun, we could do a mystery swap. You could end up with a book you would generally not read and suprise yourself.

Then will have new reading material, for the cost of a stamp.

This is a great idea. I'd join in, except for the fact that I'm a compulsive book buyer and have tons of books lying around that I have to read. Also I have some weird phobia about getting rid of my books, even though I might never read em again!

Me too. I can't loan books, I get very anxious if I don't get them back again. But then I'm a compulsive re-reader!

I'm the exact same! I'd definitely be interested in this.

Also, if anyones interested I know where to read the Twilight series online. If you want the link send me a pm. :)

It's a funny thing that, isn't it? I have the exact same crazy notion. I can't remember the last time I re-read a book (though I've only become a heavier reader / non-geek-book reader in the last year or two).

What about something like a book club then? we could decide on a book each month and then all discuss our views on it after?

My books have been read so many times, been in the bath, had dinner dropped on them, id be ashamed to lend them to other people.

I am also an avid reader, so definitely interested in the book club idea

I read alot but am incredibly protective when it comes to my books,cd's and dvd's.

I hate lending them to anyone because I have visions of dog ears, discs been used as coasters etc.Totally paranoid,I know, and most people would look after them but I just cant help it.Even if I go to a friends house and see one of their cd's lying around I will look around for a case for it,clean the disc off and put it away.

One potential problem with sending books in the mail is cost - grand if its a small paper back but if its a 600 page hardback, posting it wouldnt be cheap.
Plus (and this is the Anal Mc Looney side of me) Id be afraid they would get wet or something.:o

love reading and have so many books at home ive not read yet, so wouldnt give any of them away, we do a thing in my job where anyone that has books they have read they bring them in and leave them in canteen and there all in one big pile and you can just take books as you want them!!
but id be happy to meet anyone any evening to give them books if anyone lived near me - dont know if i can put that kind of info here but pm me if you live south city centre area and give/swap books

I'm game, I think. I'm slowly being turned into a kind of man woman by this forum. Currently reading Pride and Prejudice and loving it. Ooooh...Mr. Darcy! :pac:

We could take it in turns to choose a book and then pick a date to have it read by and then discuss it

    Love it!!!!

I know I'm not going to re-read them. I'm definitely in.

I have no problem at all pasing books on - I give them with the notio that Im never going to see it again - so if someone actually does give one back, Im always surprised. Ill only request it back from the borrowwer if I want to pass it along to someone else.

My family nd friend are very easy going when it comes to lendig and as we are all fericious readers, theres always a mountain of stuff to choose from. The house at home is like the book swwap central for the family.

My dvd collection consists of 2 I never gave back to Xtravision -0 left them in a drawer adn completly forgot about them. They never rang me for them either. When I enquired penalties uopn return, the guy just closed my account and opened a new one....and let me keep the dvd! And my cousin gave me 5 dvds with 4/5 films that I requested on each. I dont think Ive ever bought a dvd for myself. It just doesnt enter my head.

id be more for the book club idea than posting books

How about we do the book club and those that want to can bring in old books and swap em??

I have certain books that I will keep forever but would gladly swap the rest!!

Would this be a book of the month thread?
I like that idea, I'm not Dublin based so I couldn't make an actual meet.

I always lose books. It isnt a good idea to lend me anything tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,128 ✭✭✭sweet-rasmus

Hey, word of advice. If a ladies lounge book club is started, register it (free) with a book shop (I'm not gonna name drop, I guess a few different chains might do this?) and you get 10% off the book set by the club. It might only be the book chosen by the club and not just 10% off every book... not sure, but I can find out! (My mum works in a book shop) :)

    Book club great idea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

I'd be interested in the book club idea, as long as all the books weren't chick lit - I'm not saying that a little bit of Marian Keyes doesn't put a smile on Blush's face, but I have my limits. I like to vary my rubbish a bit!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,945 ✭✭✭cuckoo

I'd also be interested in an online book club - it'd be great if there were lots of deadlines (eg up to the end of chapt 6 by X date, chap 8 by Y date, etc) so it could be discussed as we were all reading it.

Sometimes when i'm reading a book i really want to have someone to turn to and talk about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

Book club is a great idea. I nominate Shantaram as it's one of the best books I've ever read, A Thousand Splendid Suns is also good, oh and Memoirs of a Geisha is beautifully written.

I wonder would anyone be interested in doing something like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, or the wizard of oz for a bit of old school weirdness. Should be interesting to read over "childrens" classics as adults.

However, I still have a small mountain of books which I wanna swap. :D

How about anything that anyone feels really strongly about? I like to pepper my serious reading with some not-so serious reading . . .

I think a book of the month is a great idea; considering that everyone might have busy schedules, I think that's enough time to read at leisure without the pressure to keep up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭squishywishy

I think the online book club would be brilliant.

We could have a special thread for it and maybe even its own moderator if boards allow it (Id love to do it!! :)).
We could pick a date to have various parts read by eg week for first chapter and then a deadline to be past certain chapters by and a final date for finishing the book. Then a week of chat, a week free (for a rest and to think of a new book) and then a new book. We could give a few days for people to get the book and/ or opt out for a month if for example its a chick lit or a classic and they dont want to read it.

I'd be happy to organise it......looking for a new project now that ive finished college in the evenings

Hey, for people interested in bookswapping, I joined this site just last 2 weeks ago - www.bookmooch.com (It was mentioned on the Irish Times) and going great so far. I've sent off about 10 books (ok so I have to pay postage) but I'm being a bit picky on the ones I choose to take, don't exactly want 10 books arriving on my door at the same time.
Also, just to mention that there's an online book club in the literature section
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055619444
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055619557
I've read both of the books, but I'm not really very good at talking about them online, so I prefer to go to the real life boards book club...

We're always looking for new people to join us.
    Ok, good luck!

I'd definitely be up for this idea! 'A Little Princess' has and always be my favorite book of all time... I'm not a girly girl but even us TomBoys like to dream *sigh* (Also would love an excuse to read the Wizrd of Oz again!) :o

I have to say Helena.Ryan is on the money about Shantaram - I loved it. Apparently there's a sequel in the works and I'm in two minds as to whether it's worth risking spoiling everything for the sake of reading it, or whether it's even humanly possible to avoid reading it if it has the potential to be a fraction as enjoyable as Shantaram was.

Can I make some possible suggestions?

Steig Larsson - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo & The Girl Who Played With Fire. They're gripping but easy to read, and very enjoyable.
Donna Tartt - The Little Friend or The Secret History.
Margaret Atwood - The Handmaid's Tale; Oryx and Crake; Cats Eye; Alias Grace; The Blind Assassin.
    Curtis Sittenfeld - Prep.
John Connolly - The Book of Lost Things.
Kate Morton - The Forgotten Garden.
Thomas Hardy - Far From the Maddening Crowd (Bathsheba reminds me of the best bits of Scarlett O'Hara).
Markus Zuzak - The Book Thief.
Michelle Magorian - Goodnight Mr. Tom (still possibly one of my favourite books of all time).
John Irving - A Prayer for Owen Meaney.

I would be up for a book swap or book club.
My reading material mainly consists of crime novels though.

+1 for a few of those; especially The Book of Lost Things. For everyone who loves a dark, adult fairy tale, there you have it. It's one of my top 5 books.

Book club sounds amazing, would sooo love that :)

Not really a book swapper 'cause I love all my books and I tend to re-read most of them and am just really paranoid about other people having them!!

Wow great responce there pn the book club idea! I would agree it should be something online (special thread) rather than a physical meet up which would prolly end up in Dublin anyway.

I was just going to suggest 'The Girl with the Dragon tatoo' as I heard it was amazing, but im loving all the suggestions that are coming through.

Great plan getting a book shop on side for it too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭Thumpette

I was just having a think of books which I've read which might be good for this....

    The Kite runner

    A thousand splendid suns

Q+A (or slumdog millionaire as they renamed it)

My Sisters keeper (i thought the book was good- but the film does look terrrrrible!)

    Memoirs of a Geisha

I started reading 'The Bookseller of Kabul' too but I seem to have lost it somewhere- what I read was great though

Been some great suggestions on other threads too! My personal preference on where to start would be something like

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'

Anyone got any better ideas for book 1? :)

Mods... could we maybe change this thread to @ladies Lounge book club' or something to get the intereste of anyone who might be into a book club but not the swap- or maybe move to a new thread? Thanks :)

Hi, im a new member. Searched bookswap and found yer old thread. Cant find any decent bookswap websites in ireland. One is for Americans only and the other is having technical difficulties constantly. Was wondering if anything came of your idea. I've a collection piling up and I'm not so bothered about exchanging them. I only keep the select few. Gimme a quick reply if you can. Thanx :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

I'm not sure anyone is interested in a swap ('cept me). Someone suggested a book club and people prefered to run with that instead. :)
