Just when I thought I couldn't possibly love HBO any more than I do already, they give me 'Bored To Death with Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson.

Seriously, me ♥ HBO.. roll on September!
Bored to Death stars Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited) Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover).

Bored to Death is a comedy about a man with a drinking problem who pretends to be a private detective.

Jason Schwartzman portrays a struggling thritysomething Brooklyn writer with a drinking problem. He decides to emulate heroes from classic private detective novels after a painful breakup with his girlfriend. Pretending to be an actual private detective, he starts taking cases – solving some and making others worse.

Executive producers for Bored to Death are Jonathan Ames, Sarah Condon, Dave Becky, Stephanie Davis and Troy Miller. The series will debut on HBO on September 20, 2009.

looks excellent, I am big fan of Jason Schwartzman and I thought Zach Galifianakis was brilliant in the Hangover. Definitely will be looking out for this one.

Looks interesting. I look forward to giving it a go.

Could be good, although I find something a little off about Schwartzman. I thought 'The Hangover' was incredibly over-rated but that Zach Galifianakis was the best thing out of it. It's also interesting that they cite their own "Curb Your Enthusiasm" for Ted Danson rather than the slightly more famous role he had some years before that...

Premise itself - I imagine he'll be a tad neurotic so I wonder if it'll be "Mr. Monk Becomes an Alcoholic"...

Will definitely take a look - CYE and the Larry Sanders Show are good examples of how they do comedy right (rather than 'Entourage'...).

"A New Comedy Series Coming In September"

What makes you so sure this isn't going to suck horribly? You "love" a company over a series that you've never even seen??? Topic creator you're a nut and seeking attention for people like errr... "Zach Gali...fian...akis"

They rarely get it wrong, to be fair. I'd struggle to name 5 below average shows they've made in the last 10 years.

Indeed.. goddamn me for being so optimistic!

Hmmm.. I didn't say I love them over a series I've never ever seen..

Some of their past programming is enough to make me want to have their little sex-obsessed-filthy-language-ridden-but-always-brillant children!
Topic creator you're a nut and seeking attention for people like errr... "Zach Gali...fian...akis"
    I am a nut..

And somehow I think "Zach Gali...fian...akis" has no problem getting attention since he was probably the only worthwhile thing about 'The Hangover'!

    And I think he's absolutely f*cking brilliant.

Watched the first episode last night.. it was good, but far from great!

Galifianakis was under-used.. and although I like Schwartzmann, it really wasn't much of a stretch of his acting muscles.

Decent.. but I sincerally hope it improves over further episodes.

Hmmm, that's kinda how I've felt about "Hung" all season long, right up to the finale. Still, it's HBO, so I'll give the first few episodes a go anyway...

Hmmmm,.. was Hung worth sticking with J-blk?

Got to the 5th episode and kinda lost interest.

Can't really say it gets much better and even the finale was pretty low key IMO. I just expected the premise to be funnier (closer to early seasons of "Weeds" - the core idea of an ordinary person turning to dodgy means to get by seems similar) and that things would progressively get worse for Ray rather than better over time, bringing some good drama into the mix.

But nope, none of that really happened TBH. It's not funny enough, it's not dramatic enough, Tanya is a completely useless character and things are moving too slowly.

I still can't call it a terrible show and I'll probably watch it next season too, but I can see it relegated to "filler" position in my queue of shows, to watch when nothing else is really on, rather than following it week to week...

I'd have to agree completely with you about Hung.

I think the 2nd series of Parks & Recreation is starting tonight. It thought the first series was fairly funny.

It starts tomorrow (Thursday nights) so we won't get to see it until Friday. Looking forward to it too, I enjoyed the first (short) season.

With a horrid watermark.. don't bother!

Watched the first 5 minutes or so of Bored to Death, but couldn't cope with the huge HBO across the screen, so I'll probably wait until it airs legitimately.
I stopped watching Hung about episode 5 or 6 with the intention of going back to look at it at a later stage, but I don't know if I will.
Will definitely give Bored To Death a chance though, as it is HBO and apart from Sex and the City I don't think I've disliked any of their shows.

    Epic casting.

Saying that I'd like to see Schwartzman play a different sort of character for a change.

This was actually better than I thought it would be. Very funny. Loved the whole hotel room scene. Looking forward to the next episode.

+1 - I didn't have huge hopes for it, but it wasn't bad at all. Zach Galifianakis was criminally underused though so hopefully they fix that in subsequent episodes. Jason Schwartzman does a great job in the lead though and he really does seem "bored to death" coasting through his life... looking forward to seeing where it goes.

+1 The best parts of the episode where the ones with Galifianakis in it.

In general, I like most of the quirky stuff Schwartzman has been in. But he's never been the main reason why I liked it.

I liked Bill Murray more in Rushmore, surprisingly I thought Wahlberg did an excellent job in I heart Huckabees, and the Darjeeling limited, well Owen Wilson stole the show for the majority.

Bored to Death seems to be the same. I've a feeling I'm going to like Galifianakis a lot more. Hopefully they will give him more, if not equal air time to Schwartzman in the coming episodes.

Also... my god does Danson look old now.

Ugh, that was horrible. I tried watching one episode and didn't bother watching the other with that HBO sign over the whole thing.

Second episode was pretty decent. Some solid humour in parts. I'm still hoping it will get better, though.

Haven't watched the second, but heard the third is a big improvement.

Yeah it was good. It's watchable. But, like the first episode, I only found myself smiling when Galifianakis was on screen.
The comic drawing of the guy saying "I will find all your treasures" :D

The scenes with Danson are still throwaway, he's adding nothing to the show for me.

HBO's slacker-noir detective comedy Bored to Death has been renewed for a second season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

Wow, HBO is really handing out the quick renewals this year - first with "Hung", now with this. Haven't watched the third episode yet but the first two were just ok, still hasn't really grabbed my attention...

The 3rd episode IS a big improvement, guess why though? There's a lot more of Gala... Gali... eh... Gallimimus Galifianakis in it. The guy is comedy gold, every scene he was in was hilarious.

It also had nothing to do with Schwartzmans Unlicensed Detective shenanigans.

Maybe by season 2 they'll kill off Schwartzman's character and make Galifianakis the lead instead? :D

Schwartzman is like a Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry was never the funniest character in the show, he was more the background observer that commentated on what was happening around him. If you think back to your funniest memories from Seinfeld, none of them will have anything to do with something Jerry was doing, it's usually something he was watching happen.

imo, they've got the roles mixed up in Bored to Death, they have Galifianakis as the observer, watching and commentating on Schwartzmans actions. He should really be the lead. Just little things he does had me in tears like in Episode 3 when he's
sitting at the table holding a normal conversation with his girlfriend then he gets up and he's dressed the top half of his body but he's still only in his underwear.
It's just so random and hilarious.

Have to say I'm really enjoying this show. It's been getting consistently better since the first few shaky episodes.

The last episode was really good. The cast has levelled out thankfully with nearly equal screen time for all the leads. Its the kind of show you watch with a smile on your face for the entirety but you never really laugh out loud.

Danson has really grown on me after last weeks episode when he was high on pot.

Overall one of my favourite new shows this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭Bugg

Been watching this every week and I really like it, since around the 4th episode I think its been getting better with every episode. Like L31mr0d said, the cast has levelled out and I think this has really improved the show.

The last three episodes have been brilliant, loved the
stolen sperm episode when there trying to track down the two lesbians.

Bit of a low key end to the first season this week. Hell, I didn't even know it was the final episode until I read it online afterwards.

Good series, though. Episodes 6 & 7 were brilliant.

Yeah, I've enjoyed the last two episodes, I also like how Schwartzman writes the music for it.His band is really good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,495 ✭✭✭chalkitdown1

Yeah, I thought the first two episodes were great. It's really kept up the high standard that it built up towards the end of the first season.

That was the real Jonathan Ames(creator and writer of the show) playing the naked boyfriend guy at the end. :D

HBO confirms that it has renewed two Sunday night comedies. Bored to Death, the private detective comedy starring Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis, and Ted Danson, and Eastbound & Down, the Danny McBride comedy, will each be returning for a third season.

    :)

I'm starting to watch the second series now. I didn't really think the first was that great, but I'm actually really enjoying the second series so far (I'm at episode 5).

I just stumbled across this show. Finishing off series 1.
Beautifully shot, well written, great cast.
Just all round great TV from HBO.

Makes me wonder what else I'm missing tbh!

Season 2 is far better than the first so you're in for a treat.

The first half on season 1 was a bit experimental and the characters where not fully rounded. Once they figured out how best to use the characters it really took off for me.

I think it's been renewed for a third season as well.

Ted Danson was one of the characters that blossomed as the show went on. Towards the end of S2 he was getting more and more screentime when initially it looked like he was going to only have small cameo's per episode. Ted and Zach have some scenes together what are comedy gold .
