Is this yearly? Has anyone done the medium course before? If so, how tough are we talking?

I was up the Vee on the weekend and even though I'm the worlds worst climber I actually enjoyed it.

Last year the medium course was a relatively flat 100km, it was basically the 160km course with the climbs taken out- the 160km dodged in and out to go over the mountains while the 100km just went around them in a circle.

Note none of the routes go over the Vee.

Yeah - think this is the third year, the last weekend of the summer.
I did it last year and the 100km is fine.

Just be aware that the homeward leg of the 'triangle' is the toughest as there is a climb involved. At least you get to stuff your face in Clonmel before tackling the climb.

I would exactly call it a climb. More a drag.

Not all boardsies have boards jerseys. It's not a problem, we somehow manage to find each other and clump together.

I wouldn't exactly call it organisation, more like the way fluff collects in your navel.

I'm from dungarvan originally so I'm looking forward to this one, don't get to cycle at home much so it's gonna be a nice one. For anyone who hasn't done this cycle it's a great spin even with the climbs, some great scenery!

All credit to technical terminology penexpers, but I'm still out of the saddle and wondering where's the goddamn end of it... so same thing to me!

OK it's not Alpe d'Huez, but it is better to know that it is coming than to be caught offguard and thinking that it is the same as the cycle up to that point, as were a few of my friends last year who weren't too familiar with the sunny southeast.

Can anyone else get to the site today? It seems down for me. It redirects to waterfordcoco and then errors.

Me personally I think you should be doing at least 100km per week and on a long spin I would say 75km. The 75km you should do at least twice between here and the event. Also note it's hilly so I'd be getting used to going up hills also. It mighn't do you any harm to enter the Tour of Kildare this weekend either.

I think he's talking about the 100km which doesn't go over Powers the Pot.

    Two questions, any help appreciated.

Are people doing the 160? I did the Wicklow 200 in about 7'45, without too much suffering. My training has been fairly consistent since. IS the 160 doable?

And are people from Dublin driving down on the morning? Or do most stay over?

    Cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

The 160 is slightly easier than the Wicklow 200, probably about as much climbing but just 35km or so lopped off which does take the edge off it. 7'45 is a good time for the W200 so you will have no problems at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

Just signed up for the 160km and paid for it online there today. Should be a good day out, not sure if I'll stay down for the night/weekend or not.

To you guys who are cycling on the roads every day during the summer getting some training be aware of the traffic which you are meeting on your journey.Alarge vehicle overtaking you needs 1 metre so if theres two abrest, need i say anymore especially on a regional road. With some of you guys your heading for an early epitaph. Bogs.

1 metre, interesting. Nice to have a number to work with. So that's precisely the ammount of space that a motorist will have to patiently wait for before safely overtaking a group of cyclists. And I guess with two abreast that might mean waiting to overtake when free of oncoming traffic. Guess that's motoring for you, it'd be the same with a slow moving car/driver. Although with some of the speeding going on and plainly dangerous overtaking some motorists are heading for an early accident. Serious stuff.

Thinking about it, since the start of the season all I've found is more time training leads to more miles & speed, and more speed means heading for an early(er) shower not much else TBH

Indeed there is though you get it when you sign on.
Pack just contains registration letter, route map, tourist info sheet for Dungarvan and a sponsorship card for the Irish Cancer Society.

And they're nice Tshirts too! Think they give out a lucozade sports and a banana and a few bits with the Tshirt at the start last year too(?)

    Recuperation fuel for after Seskin....

Could be mixing stuff up with another sportive though (the starts are sometimes seem to blend into the start of one big super sportive...)

Is anybody staying down in Dungarvan on the Sunday night for beers etc? I'm going to book a room for Saturday night but want to see what others are up to before I confirm anything.

Yeah, Junior, but that just means a big hill back up at the end of it...stayed there last year, staying there again this year. Will see you there if you book in ROK ON.

I'm staying Sunday night although the Directeur Sportif might be too knackered for drinking if she does the 160.

Its not a tshirt this year lads, its a cycling jersey. Saw the design for it a couple of weeks ago, they were between a blue and pink design and a more traditional green and white one, they went with the green and white one....

That Seaview place is fully booked, so I booked into this place, http://ringbedandbreakfast.ie/.

They have jacuzzi which maybe useful for after the cycle.

Cycling jersey is a fantastic idea. People will be wearing them out on the bike all year round - great publicity.

Cool, cycling jersey is much better than a T Shirt.

Ah bummer, I'm gonna miss this so no jersey for me :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Registered now, sure a cycling jersey would cost over €40 on its own, if we get that included it is spectacular value.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 110 ✭✭warrfla

I sent in a postal entry in early july, the cheque still hadnt been cashed so I rang the organisers. The lady told me they are just back off two weeks holidays and alot of the confirmations are being sent out over the next few days.

She confirmed my entry was received so I'm in, Nice one on the jersey aswell, thats a great idea.

That sounds class, nice bang for buck there.

I just selected a Large as I thought it was just some t-shirt I'd never wear anyways, but if it's a cycling jersey I'll want to make sure it fits and I may need to change it to an XL. Do you know who I could give a shout to ask about sizing?

Just signed up there for the 100. It will be my first 100k, I will hopefully find some slow pack to stick in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,031 ✭✭✭CheGuedara

The 100km is a nice cycle - a very fair and scenic route. We had members do it the past two years and they gave great reviews of it, and with the numbers that take part you're sure to end up meeting people going the same pace and maybe going along with a group from there.
