    Regal Crown Sour Apple Drops.
Sold in a paper tube packet, individually wrapped in wax paper.
Dont think they are available or can be got from any retro sweet shops.
But they were the best tasting apple drops I've ever had.

Where about is that shop? I'm in England myself!

I do just about remember half-penny sweets but they quickly became penny sweets :) I loved Black Jacks and Fruit Salads. Time bars were great but I was wary of them after I lost a milk tooth in one :o

Blue Rave Bars!! Omg, the sugary goodness!

Ghosties, Chicken Chomps, Fun Onions, Snaps oh the glory :)

No, they're different. Stingers were green with pink sherbet inside, Wham were the pink ones with the sour sugary crystals in them.

And I've seen both for sale recently in Athlone IT's student union.

    What a great thread!
The sad thing about all the penny sweet malarkey was when you went with your 50p - or £1 if you were really lucky - the shopkeeper might be really p-eed off with you or would count out the sweets him/herself and not give you the full amount. :(

I remember going to the cinema one time and asking the man what I would get for my moiney and he gave me all these lovely tasty things and was really kind and patient. That really made my day!

Does anyone remember the drinks you got in the cinema - they were fruity drinks in a plastic cup with a foil lid and you pierced it with a tiny red straw?

I loved the FizzWhizz stuff you put on your tongue and it would fizz - you could get a bubblegum version of this which was even better.

There was also that red liquorice stuff, flat and rolled up,
sweet necklaces - never liked the taste of the sweets but loved the necklace,
lipstick things that had a lipstick container but the "lipstick" was a sweet
    pez which are still around
I loved all the fruit salad and black jacks and the apple flavoured ones. Black jacks made your mouth soooo black!

I remember them well. I don't know why I used to buy them as they were God awful yokes. I ate about 20 of them one time and puked them all back up 5 minutes later.
I used to love the Trebor fruit salads though. 10 for a penny:D.
Used to drive the b1tch at the newsagent mad when a gang of us would go in and each order 10 pence worth.:p

Does anyone remember those little boxes of alpabet sweets? Just remembered them recently. I remember Fizzle sticks too...mmmm! The earliest sweet I can remember are Peggy's legs and these little bags of sherbet that were red and had a pic of a little old lady on the packet. I remember being carried up to bed on a sunny evening. My mam brought me up a bag of this sherbert. I sucked the toffee lolly away then dipped my dummy in the fizz. My sister came up to bed and threw a tantrum 'cos I'd fizz and she hadn't:o. That would've been about '74..

Also nobody I know remembers 10:30 chocolate bars. These were out in the early 80's for a very short period and they disappeared.

There is a shop in Crumlin round the corner from the hospital that sells loads of these sweets. Had my 31st there a month or two ago and all the sweets were stuff like candy cigarettes, dib dabs, Desperate Dan Bars, roy of the rovers bars etc. Everyone was wary of the Wham bars, scared we were gona pll our teeth out. They even do a range of penny sweets, even Golfball and Rainblo chewing gum!!! Its retro heaven, try and space out my visits as I can feel my teeth becoming looser even thinking about some of them :D

Don't forget rubblegum, and my personal favourite, toffee logs. I was three when they were out which would have been around 1981, but I remember they were 1/2p :)

What about the Count Duckula-themed Wham bar-type thingies?

Suckula they were called if I recall correctly.
    Yum

used to love the whoppa bars, 5p each - mint and cola! 5p drumstick lollies, rolls of frosties, chocolate mice, viking crisps, penny gobstoppers, smileys, fizzy orange bottles (although i used to call them orange cola bottles!!)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,397 ✭✭✭✭Degsy

10p ice-pops..Olympic Cola and Captain Dread(which had a seriously scary label),JR's,Thataways(in the shape of a finger),Draculas(with red inside) and Funny Frogs to name but a few.
There were also these cylindrical shaped ice pops that were deep red, almost purple and were also available in orange and white(pear flavoured yeeuch).

There used used to be this strawberry flavoured ice cream in the early 90's that came in little tubs with a spoon. Used to call it strawberry mousse but I don't know if that was right but it was like ambrosia at the time to me.

I remember most of the sweets mentioned here, anyone remember the Dracula ice lolls, black on the outside and red on the inside. Getting sticks of chewing gum in the packets of collectable cards like Land Of The Giants or those soccer cards. Dime bars and Highland Toffee bars. Edible cigarettes which you prentended to smoke before eating (they started us on the habit young back then!). Gobstoppers with chewing gum in the middle. Fizzle Sticks and Lemon sherbit with the black liquorice, there was another packet of sherbit divided into three but the name escapes me now.

    Ye'll all get a laugh off this....enjoy!

I do remember Dracula ice pops, I imagined they were white and red in the middle. I used to love them. I remember these white ice pops with a picture of a snowman on the front too...can't think of the name. Also Ricki Raspers (raspberry flavoured ones) and the orange Captain Quenchers, Little Angels(pear flavoured tubular ones with a little bit of chocolate on the top) and Little devils(strawberry tubular ones...maybe it was them that had the choc on top).
Jaw Breakers, fizz bombs(or money balls)..some had a 2p in. I loved Fizzle Sticks especially when they were a bit soft. The fizz bags you're thinking of aren't 'Dib Dabs' by any chance?
I remember candy cigarettes courtesy of Superman but I also remember another type of cigarette that may have been sticks of bubblegum wrapped in some kind of paper covered in icing sugar or flour..whatever it was, it gave the illusion of smoke when you blew.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭murf313

the white ice lollies with the snowman on them was called "mr frosty" (i think you can still get them in the north?)
