How much do you really need to eat?

    For a woman do you think this weight loss diet is ok:

    Breakfast - a couple of peices of fruit, 3 poached eggs and a grilled tomato

    snack - fruit

    lunch - a chicken breast with veg

    dinner - prawns with veg

    plus some fish oil and evening primrose oil supplements.

    According to the rosemary conley calorie guide, the above only comes to about 800 or 900 calories, which I know is not enough. However, weight-loss diets in magazines and stuff often allow you less food than that. What do you think?

    Three eggs is fine, just might get boring. There have been several recent studies where they fed women 2-3 eggs a day for months and it didn't affect the blood readings.

    Actually, I'd say that comes to more than 800 calories, unless your portions are tiny. Eggs are close to 100 calories each, and most fruit is 60-80 cals a piece, some are more.

    The best way to know how many calories you need is to spend an ordinary week, one where you don't change weight, recording every single thing you put in your mouth. Then average it all out, and you have your maintenance calories, already adjusted for your lifestyle.

    So much depends on your lifestyle, your age, fitness level and health, that it's very hard to guess. I personally think that most on-line calculators are way too generous with their calorie estimations. I've found that for anyone who commutes to a desk job, about 13 cals per pound of body weight is close to maintenance, even if you really work hard in the gym. This can be higher if you are very young, or very active, or pregnant or breastfeeding, and can be less if you are older or very overweight.
