As DJ Carey only retired in 2005, I'd have to give it to him

Maybe change the thread title to 'Best Munster Hurler of The Last Decade'

As for Munster hurlers over the past decade, I'm torn between any of the list below:

    Paul Flynn
    Eoin Kelly
    Tony Brown
    Ben O'Connor
    Brendan Cummins
    Brian Lohan

Very under-rated hurler IMO, even amongst Tipp fans - An Ox of a man :)

Ben O Connor... No question about it!!

Ah twould have to be Brian Corcoran. 3 all irelands in that space of time, 1 hurler of the year, 2 all stars. Dominated in two completely different positions he played in. Don't think anyone else could measure up to that

Ken McGrath. I would have said Paul Flynn but he was only at the top of his game for the first 4 years of the decade. Ken meanwhile has continuously proven to be our best and most important player consistently throughout the decade, whether he played at centre back, centre forward or full back.

Ah come on you can't really say Ken Mcgrath. Where was he against kilkenny on the big day last year? Thats where players are to be judged.
Was actually targeted by kilkenny in last years final and he had to be moved out of position.
Didnt perform well at all at full back when he was there- (he was only put there cos waterford had no other options).
How are people talking about Brian Lohan as player of this decade (1999- 2009). Brian Lohan was well past his prime in the last half of this decade.
Last good season for Clare was 2004.

There were 13-14 Waterford players that didn't play well that day, but that shouldn't take away from their past performances in the years that led to that day. It's well handy for great Munster players like Corcoran or O'Halpin because have been given numerous opportunities to prove themselves on the "big day". But for a few of those players last September could well be the only All-Ireland final the play in their careers, and they had the misfortune of coming up against one of the best hurling teams ever.

Anyway, since when was that match the only "big day" Ken played in? How about the 2002 Munster final when he scored 7 points from play to win our first Munster title since the 60's, or the same match two years later when he captained us to victory against Cork despite being a man short, or in last years AI semi final when he gave a MOTM performance to help us qualify for our first final in 45 years? Are Munster finals and AI matches in Croke Park not big days in the Championship?

He didn't play bad at full back either. He was asked to do a job and he did it, it just so happened that they saw his services were more required elsewhere.

okay to make this more interesting, going to add this to the mix. each poster at end of their post names their top three contributions. ie 1. Davy Fitzgerald(Ce), 2. Brian Corcoran (Crk) 3. Dan Shanahan (Wford). Also a few contributions from Limerick would be welcome here just to make the poll representative of all the hurling counties. those who have previously posted can edit their posts with their top three at the bottom.

wouldn't go so far as to say he dominated at full forward!!!

for now can we just stick to nominations. when poll is up you can debate all you want. will make it easier to collate votes.

Can't we just add the poll now? It's inevitable people are going to debate in this topic anyway, and if you're worried about not putting the right players in the poll just add an "other" option at the end.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

No because in other poll people were saying others were left out. two weeks gives people plenty of time to forward their nomination.

It's difficult to pick a hurler from this decade alone. A lot of the legends of the game would have been at their best in the 90s, lads like Brian Lohan, Brian Corcoran, Tommy Dunne, Ciaran Carey and Fergal Hartley (trying to be diplomatic here). For two or three years there you'd have entertained the notion of Nially McCarthy being up there, yet he went on to be exposed as not good enough to make his own team. Eoin Kelly also was the best hurler in Ireland for a few years there but has fallen off the radar to an extent lately. You won't find many hurlers who have performed consistently for the decade.

I'm going to go with 1. Eoin Kelly (Tipp) 2. Ken McGrath (Wford) 3. Ben O'Connor (Cork)

Paul Flynn and Tony Browne also deserve a mention, as does Lar Corbett. Was tempted to put McGrath in first but I think he only reached the level of greatness when he moved to centre back and as a forward he would have been eclipsed by Flynn.

I can't stand Dean. Anyone whose dives that much cannot be respected in a GAA context. Great little hurler who finished very well but all those cynical dives turned me off him completely. I don't care how much you lack in size, it doesn't justify it.

    limerick out and out here

    ciaran carey
    mark foley
    andrew o'shaughnessy

Eoin kelly (tipp), brian lohan (clare) and mark foley (a limerick nominee. Some hurler.)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

just putting it out here but anyone for Sean Og or Diamuid O'Sullivan. The way i see it Cork have been the outstanding munster team of the last decade and Sean Og despite one or two bad sideline cuts was still going strong after fifty championship games. some achievement. The Rock also put in some mighty performances as well.

Tipp - Eoin Kelly, Brendan Cummins
Cork - Joe Deane, Sean Òg, Ben O'Connor

    Clare - Brian Lohan
    Limerick - Mark Foley

yes a few front runners emerging already. Definitely Ken McGrath and Corcoran in poll judging by nominations so far. all will be revealed soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Pride Fighter

Ken McGrath for me, I always picture him catching impossible balls with 2 or 3 opposition forwards swarmed around him, winning a free 100 yards out and banging it over the bar.

    1) Eoin Kelly (Tipp), 2) Ken McGrath (Waterford) and 3) Ben O'Connor (Cork). Think all three have been major forces in their teams for the whole 10 year period but Kelly is a class above.

    seanie mcmahon clare

I cant believe there is such a debate here: Eoin Kelly (Tipp) has won 5 All-Stars and i dont think there is anyone else who has more than 3 ??? I know that All-Stars are not always bang on but they are always a fair reflection on things. May i also remind everyone that the All-Ireland finalists dominate the All-stars every year and Kelly has only played in one All-Ireland (2001) that i can remember........he has definately only won one !! I think this should be the end of this debate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,054 ✭✭✭✭Professey Chin

    Id still say Tony Browne

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

I think you can safely assume the Eoin Kelly votes are going for the Tipp man.

The Waterford Eoin Kelly shouldn't be anywhere near this list.

On what basis ??? Because you're a Waterford man ???
Granted he has been a great hurler and the last decade have been his best years, they've won about 3 Munster titles and he has 2 or 3 All-Stars but Eoin Kelly has been the most consistant hurler for the last 10 years in Munster and i cant see how anyone can argue with that.

Also, 2 others who i'm surprised haven't been spoken about much here: Sean Og O Halpin & Eamonn Corcoran

The use of the word 'consistant' should make it very clear that its Eoin Kelly of Tipp
