Those of you in your early 20s, have you been saving your money?

Sorry if the question sounds kind of personal. I'm just wondering how you guys are doing money wise.

I find myself wasting a lot of my money on crap and on going out (alcohol has to be the biggest waste of money on earth).

I have a couple of thousand saved up.

    What about you guys?

    George Best, right? :D

Yeah, it's just I'm feeling guilt as fck about spending all my money on booze, music festivals, trips, clothes, and various other bits of sh*t I could cut down on.

I don't have life savings, really. My family isn't wealthy, and at the rate I'm going, I'll have nothing left.

    As said, what money!?

Five years of college will sap any earnings away from you.

I had savings once, all used as a house deposit, now I live payday to payday.

    Edit: I didn't read title properly, I'm 30 not early 20's.

Yeah, I got raped financially in college too.

Much of it was my own fault. I stupidly spent a sh*tload of money on a girl I was seeing, bringing her with me travelling around Europe.

Add that to generally drinking all the time, and not bothering my lazy stupid ass to budget my food and curtail my general spending.

Am broke because I didn't have a part-time job in final year in college, instead lived off savings. I'm used to living on very little though after so many years of student life.

Eh,i'm really bad at saving. I always manage to get to about 2k and then see something i have to get. Really need to try and save to go back to college next year and just got a loan for a new car so really, i'm in debt...again

    Ah well,it's life. Enjoy it!

Yup, well I added the bit about slow women :pac:

But ya I worked for 2 years after 5 years in college and made a small fortune, its all gone now and I'm back in college. I'm not that worried, I don't have any commitments and nobody relies on me. I know people my age with kids and mortgages, I dunno how they make ends meet tbh. I think I'll always be able to make money and enough to get by, I don't think it should rule your life either though.

    True, you've gotta have fun.

And at the same time, it's good to save so you can enjoy yourself in the future.

I've been thinking about getting braces. My teeth are like Austin powers'.

    That would rape me, money-wise.

Still, having straight teeth lasts forever... and it will help me attract teh ladeez.

Same here - no commitments, thank GOD.

And I would rather top myself than have kids and a mortage right now. Ah, so much stress! Horrible!

Im 25 and I dont have a penny to my name. I borrowed so much money to go to college, and to pay for my car etc, so I now owe about 18,000. When I get paid every week, after my rent and loans have been paid, I spend the rest on nights out, clothes etc. I will start worrying about savings in a couple of years. After spending so many years studying, I figure life is for living. I have plenty of time to be serious!! :)

What age were you when you travelled, and how much did you spend?

Eh, well first I lived in America for 6 months (illegally) when I was 21/22 and only worked on and off. I had €10,000 that time.

Then I went travelling at 24 and had about the same amount of money maybe a bit more. I did work a good bit while in Australia but I never felt pressure with money.

Many said "Oh that's a deposit for a house, blah blah.." Yeah great, what I meant to do, look at the 4 walls??

Do everything you want while you're young, you might not get the chance again!

working exactly a year in the grown up world and in a fair bit of debt. it's actually quite annoying and i'd give anything ( namely the money ) to get out of debt.

24 years old, putting 7% of my wages into my Retirement fund which i wont see for another 40 years, not to mention i could get hit by a bus tomorrow or the stock market halving in the months leading up to my retirement.

I think i may just have to make the decision now that i am not going to live till im 64 and stop spending money on my old wrinkly 64year old ass and spend it on my young, firm 24 year old ass or at least on a girls young, firm 24 year old ass!

Graduated 4 years ago and went straight to work, and have been saving like a mofo since. I had part time jobs all through college too so I was even putting some away back then as well.
Presently I'm working overseas for my Irish employer and they are paying for my car and accomodation, so its kind of easy to save at the moment! Plus the cost of living over here is so cheap.

Whenever I think of getting old, a horrible, sickening feeling overcomes me... and the urge to live it up and have FUN overcomes me.

Imagine saving all your money while young, never travelling or going on adventures, and then having loads of money but being in your SIXTIES. Yahhh, time to start living it up.

    I think I'd cry.

Used to be, got paid less than the minimum wage for first 2 & half years..

Doing bits of lecturing, lab demonstrations, grinds and any other bits and bobs around the college, as well as draining the last of my savings to get through the last year or so..

I have just started saving. I'm 24. I squander money on clothes, alcohol, trips away and now am seeing the need for at least having a little bit stashed away. I'm saving 100E a week so hopefully by the end of the year I'll have about 3 grand.

Not particularly to be honest - wouldnt mind taking it up later on in my career, mainly do it to pay the bills at the minute.. although if an bord snip gets its way there wont be much money floating around for that..

My PhD is in computer science, without going into nerd talk :) its in the general area of ubiquitous computing, where we're looking at ways for people to interact with computers in a more natural way rather than keyboard & mouse.

I smoke so a large chunk of my 18-22 money was p1ssed away.

I have just barely enough money to pay for braces, and it's kind of sickening when some people are born with nice straight teeth...

Oh well, it's a good investment.

I've been studying for the last four years, and only working summers for the last two years, so where by heading back to college each September I would have over 2k saved, by the end of the college year I would have nothing left.

I'm only just out in the big bad world this year, and have just gotten a new job, so am planning to save about €150 a week. I don't drink or smoke, but most of my money gets spent on music or concerts.... I like seeing my credit union account increase though, and I find saving in the bank is pointless as it is to easy to spend it.
